"Take The A-Train" - Jazz Vibraphone Etude

  • Billy Strayhorn composed this classic composition that became a staple of Duke Ellington's playlist in 1939. Strayhorn was an amazing composer - you should definitely check out his other works.
This is a great jazz song for beginning jazz improvisors - it uses the C major, D lydian dominant, F major and D mixolydian scales.
I've composed an etude for jazz vibraphone that fits over the chord changes from this classic jazz standard. The first chorus is very diatonic, the second chorus features some use of the altered dominant scale and some other chromatic embellishments to the harmony. In the third chorus there are some cool double-time runs and other things that I hope you'll enjoy.

I like how sometimes you drag and even out your 8th notes in some sections. It adds a really cool touch, and it sounds so good.
