One of the goals Project Shadow was making this theoretical 'Ultimate Lifeform' completely immune to every disease on Earth. Gerald knew that one of those diseases was NIDS, which is what was killing Maria, and hoped that a potential cure for it would be found during the process of making Project Shadow immune to it.
When Shadow was created, with the last-minute aid of an alien race called the Black Arms, Gerald then shifted his focus on studying Shadow's alien DNA and finding out _what exactly_ made him and the Black Arms immune to diseases. During this process, G.U.N. raided the ARK and killed Maria, driving both Shadow and Gerald to genocidal madness.

Shadow’s own game revealed that Gerald met an evil alien warlord called Black Doom who gave him his DNA to create Shadow. So Shadow is half alien, a race called the Black Arms. Black Doom wanted a soldier, but Gerald prepared against the alien invasion.
10:54 Technically not Sonic's image, but just a hedgehog in general using the positive energy of the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic wasn't even born yet, and Gerald was simply trying to recreate what he saw in the prophecy.
And the prophecy was about Sonic, so technically it is in Sonic's image. He just doesn't know that.

That's because it's a fan theory. From the start, Maekawa wrote this story to be vague & for there to be no real answer for why Sonic and Shadow look alike. He confirmed this on his twitter.

It's intentionally vague why they resemble eachother. Maekawa confirmed that he wrote it the story in a way where there was no real answer.
They aren't fakers of one another, they're both just coincidentally similar. They just called eachother "faker" until the 2nd fight between them where Shadow acknowledges there is more to Sonic than just looking like him.

No, it's not bias. He's only covering the story as depicted in SA2, and he does cover the Black Doom story in a part 2, titled Aftermath.
