Handful of tips for anyone interested: Using diagonal roads reduces the number of tiles needed and decreases travel distance at the cost of style factor. Traffic lights are very, very situational - any other upgrade choice is more likely to be beneficial, even if you don't have an immediate use for it. Cars don't slow down at 3-way intersections like they do for any larger ones, so try to minimize intersections with 4 or more ways. Going around other colors is practically always better than creating an intersection. Don't be afraid to entirely delete and redraw roads if it means reducing intersections.
So for example, at the start of the first game when the first yellow spot showed up, it would have been efficient to redirect the red traffic north of the yellow houses before forking to each red spot, so that the yellow traffic could use the southern road alone.

My road goes out onto a motorway. Yeah it can be very loud, but we have a lot of tall trees to try and block out sound
