UPDATE on Louis (11/28/2022): I reached out to Louis and he responded back letting me know he is “doing OK, just getting a little older”. He also said he has been busy with projects around the house and with his family, and cleaning up his electronics shed to make more room. I don’t want to go into more without his permission, but just wanted to let all who read this know that he is okay.

Hi F16. I'm glad Louis is okay. He's freed up his lab by now, but perhaps he could provide the community with the solution he used years ago to create the dual power module for this project. Do you think he could just provide us with the schematic? Can you help us by asking Louis? No explanation, just a schematic of the solution used. Would be great. Thank you.

2nd April 2021::: Dear Louis, I have been following your channel for many years and have found you to be an absolutely charming, intelligent and keen person. Your videos and projects are brilliant and have been extremely informant. We do not know each other personally, but if I would, I would consider you very sympathetic and a good friend.
It's been quite a long time since your last Video and your last comments. It is obvious that something troubles you. Some have posted comments inappropiate to your absence on the channel. They lack empathy to understand, that there are sometimes things in ones private life to which one has a higher commitment. Be it ones own health or that of some family member. I feel for you and your loved ones and wish you the best and if in my or your community followers power... strength, good or better health and all the best!!
would be great to hear from you in any which way possible... Take Care Pierre Kiefer

26 May 2022 ::: I have thought twice about saying something like this...... But, I fear that Louis is no longer with us, looking at the timeline and any chit chat on his website, the latest reply I can find was December 2018, and one comment lower down about 2 years back according toy YT, I think that the pandemic may have taken its toll, I do hope that I am horribly wrong and that Louis is still here but just sick and tired of certain disrespectful comments that have been made. This man is one of the few who is able to explain and teach theory in such a way that one could understand it. Louis, May you be blessed in all you do. You have been a great inspiration to many of us that follow this channel...

Just wanted to say "thank you" for all your videos and projects. I know it's now been years, but just wanted to stop back by and tell you how much I appreciate what you did for a guy that had more curiosity than brains. You helped relieve a bit of the "brains" issue with your videos and the time you took to explain each thing. I loved your teaching style and the way you started each project in a "crude but works" way and modified it in logical steps until it was a good lab worthy piece of equipment. Miss the videos but hope you're keeping healthy and happy in whatever you are doing nowadays!

Will you be covering upgrades/developments regarding these slight waveform distortions in the next parts?
I would be making one as a mains-operated bench project using two ready-made +V, -V and +5V psu board kits - is there any objection (from a performance point of view) to doing this?

      Hi,
I use KiCad for the schematic and PCB design. For the component layout I use the layout image from KiCad and then enhance it and add colour using Paint Shop Pro software.
      Regards,
      Louis

    Perfect solution and thanks.
I'll share with you my project later, which I've done the same Project using FPGA (with DDS concept), I know that FPGA is little bit expensive. the range I got was between 1- 1000'000 Hz.
Is there any way to go beyond this range, i.e. more than 50MHz?
I appreciate your experience and Hard-Working.
    thanks again

As always, thanks for sharing your work. I've been working on a project with a AD9833 DDS signal generator module (which cost me £3.55 from eBay) being controlled by an Arduino Nano. Have you thought about using this instead of the XR-2206 ? That makes it easy to display the frequency because that's what you configure in the software. I just have to get the gain and offset issues sorted with my op amp (AD818).

      Hi,
Thanks for your comments. I have purchased a few AD9833 chips to have a look at and may use one in a future project.

An elegant design. Looks awesome. Your MK1 version also had PWM, are you intending to implement that feature in this design too. Would you be considering making the “final” PCB available as you did the Electronic Dummy Load?

Thanks Bruce. As I have a few spare PCB's for this project I have posted a set of PCB's to you in Australia (the Function Generator PCB and the Power Supply module PCB I am working on for Part 2 video of this project).

      Louis

Nice project as always. I like your Videos and builds. I have just one minor complaint: wouldn’t it be better to trim the lower end of your dac output analog like the upper end rather ten to limit the resolution of the nice 12bit dac to less than 11 bits effectively. I know it’s a bit nitpicky but if one would like the extra fine grain frequency tuning 12 bits are better then 11 or slightly under.

Thanks for the comment. In this situation we need a voltage swing which does not go down to zero so I set the DAC output to a fixed lower limit. There may be ways of enhancing the resolution which we could look at as we progress.

      Louis

I had the circuit board printed and populated. I have good power going to the board. I have downloaded all the libraries necessary to make the arduino sing. All is good. It boots up with his message (yay), but then the rotary encoder wasn't working correctly. It would try to change the multiplier through rotation and not the button push. I double checked all wiring and paths and they are ok? Has anyone else made this project yet? If so, did you get the encoder to work properly? I have double checked the gerber files using gerbv and the board is manufactured just like the file, so it isn't an error in producing the board. Any advice would be appreciated. By the way I have a few extra boards made up if anyone else wants to give this project a try.

Very nice as always, I'll be looking forward to future updates though. I'm disappointed that there is no display of the frequency or digital control/display of the amplitude. The lack of an amplitude display is why I never made your Mk1 version. And surely it would be easier and better to software control the range? Then just use the encoder to go from minimum to maximum frequency.

      Hi,
Thanks. This is just Part 1 of this project. The initial software I put together for Part 1 of this project will change as we progress. The display on the LCD will also change as we progress. It is my intention to add some form of frequency display on the LCD. The features and feel of this Function Generator project will change as we advance its operation and interface.
      Regards,
      Louis

That's why I'll be looking forward to the updates. I always admire your designs and love to see the functionality improve as they progress. I've learnt a lot about circuit design design from watching them evolve.
