'80s Computer Adverts Were... Certainly Something

- Back in the 1980s, Micro Magazines were filled to the brim with baffling adverts for software, hardware and... Well, some things I'm not even sure of. Back in the distant year of 2021, RoseTintedSpectrum and his good friend Stu The Brummie decided to take a look at some of these oft forgotten horrors of the past.

I have had a truly awful 2024.... But this man have kept a smile on my face and an outlet to relax and enjoy some of the time I have .... Thank you RTS.... ❤
Hope you have a better 2025 and at least what remains of 2024.
Me too man, me too. Still struggling, so content like this is a godsend.
Omg i near shit when i couldnt find your channel, welcome back bro
9:00 "Please rush me my portable walrus polishing kit! Four super brushes for cleaning even the trickiest of sea-bound mammals! Yes, I am over 18, although my IQ isn't."
Alright smeghead.
red dwarf fan i see
Great to see you back, dude.
Delighted you got things fixed with YT
YOU'RE BAAAAACKKKKK!!!!!
thank fuck, the sacrifices worked
My first born went in the pot, but damn it was worth it!
So, what happened?????
I’m in Paris with my fiancée. She can check out the Blackpool tower while I watch this. Thank you!
Good luck with your marriage!!! lol
@ 😂😂😂
The tower has been there for years, this video is new!
@@benmmedia9534 3 years old isn't new is it?
@ newer than the tower, though
This can't end here! This must auger an entire series of 80's adverts worthy of (dubious) awards!
9:00 to buy Magic Worm you have to tick a box next to Magic Word and then send them your money. Good luck with that!
Glad to have you back, I started having cold sweats when I thought I'd left my Breaking Bad Influence binge too late 😰
Really glad you’re back!
Corrine Russel got me here. Adverts work.
Glad to see the channel back .
Keep up the good work pal
Came here after hearing what TH-cam did to you from cntrl alt rees. Liked. Subscribed.
Glad the channel is back mate!
Well done for getting your channel back!
I hope TH-cam have learned something about their appeals process (but I very much doubt it)
Three cheers for you, though! 🥳👾
33:03 unless I'm mistaken "fuzzy wuzzies" is another example of classic British xenophobia and that's a spear the grimacing fella is holding rather than a magic wand - oh dear, Mr Humpty...
Great content as usual 👍
Yaaaaaaaayyyyyy!!!! You're back! 😃
welcome back sir, glad to see it all got sorted out.
You're BACK! :D
I used to read my Granddad's Spectrum magazines over and over as a kid. Some of these illustrations and ads really brought back some great memories! Thanks for sharing and providing the amusing observations!
Pure comedy gold - I laughed so hard, I nearly coughed up a lung!
Tony harts O face!
Never thought I would live to see the day!
As an Amstrad CPC veteran (Rafaelle Cecco ruined my youth, I played Cybernoid I & II every night for some years in school!) I'm glad to have you back online! Never stop broadcasting, Retro is the Best!
It's good to have you back, Rosie!
Found you from a news article. Glad to see you're back mate. Anyone that fights TH-cam's seemingly arbitrary rules enforcement is a friend of mine.
I was literally in stiches!!! 😂 great job once again!! 🤝🏼
Weird that I was watching the original video of this not a few weeks ago thinking .. why has this not been watched by more people? .. and now lots of people are seeing it! Justice!! Justice for the oche and Larry
This was a laugh. Really enjoyed the riffing.
@35:21 You brought back teenage flashbacks of Sabrina rising from that pool. I only watched it for the inflatable pool life savers.🤪 Honestly!
Precisely. The REAL version of "Boys, Boys, Boys" is the most heterosexual song ever recorded.
Welcome back!🎉
For all of the wonders modern technology brings us, I miss the days when all it took to be a graphic designer was owining a packet of felt-tip pens.
The drawing on the left of the language connoisseur ad at 26:27, was that an 80's premonition of that meme where Pedro Pascal is grinning maniacally at Nick Cage?
Not watched the video yet, but having just turned 49, boy I'm looking forward to this one! If I don't see Maria Whittaker and Wolf I'm gonna feel short-changed 😅
YES. This is the kind of content I die for.
I've never been more disconnected from advertising than in the current day.
That joystick that attaches to the keyboard was a terrible idea 😂 the Casio watch was quite cool though. Loved the 80s artwork.
Loving there’s a bit of Op Ivy in there.. what a mix RTS+Oakland punk rock.. the dream!
Came here after seeing the Vixen girl in the thumbnail, that advert to little me felt like it was something I should NEVER let my parents know was in there.
09:00 they are selling the game "Magic worm" and the little "please rush me" form has it spelled "magic word" 😂
Welcome back, mate
Honey wake up, a new RoseTintedSpectrum video just dropped
23:47 Bizarrely, there was (and maybe still is in some parts of the UK) a school subject called "reasoning" which was assessed as part of the 11-Plus exams at the end of primary school. Generations of kids have failed to get into grammar school because they couldn't answer questions like:
"Butterfly is to caterpillar as frog is to___"
or
"Which of the following words are the closest synonyms: shout, chat, talk, speak, gossip, yell, whisper."
That explains it then! It just seemed like such a generalised term.
"Hello, my name is Jonathan and I have a masters in cold, hard facts"
Was that second one a real question? Closest synonyms to what? How many words do I get to choose? I would have lost my shit at a vague, nonsensical question like that 😂
@@newsbender They're both real questions, but there'd usually be a more detailed explanation of what kind of answer they wanted at the start of each section, eg "circle the three words that best answer each question".
Some of the questions were pretty vague and nonsensical, and the mark schemes could be very strict about only accepting the 'correct' answer, even if there were other equally valid answers.
@@gwishart Shout and yell, talk and speak. All the others, besides those two pairings, require additional modifiers or limitations to mean the exact same thing as another word.
This kind of lesson was great for building up abstract thinking, and thinking beyond exact instructions. It's not a good thing we decided it was too complicated and difficult to do it right.
The more modern name for this would be Cognition, or a Cognitive Ability Test. It's meant to be like a captcha test to prove you're human and not just a robot who can memorize exam answers.
The past truly is a foreign land
The ‘Certainly Something’ series continues!!! Yes!!!
This really made me laugh, you must do another one
Eureka was a great text adventure, it had events that worked in time scales like you had so many seconds to react or you would die, or lose health as an enemy attacked, written by Ian Livingstone of Fighting Fantasy book fame.
Artificial Intelligence is going to be the end of everything! Good to have you back 🎉
19:26 Reminds me of the budget car racing game where you "steered" by rolling a little plastic wheel along the number row.
Splendid video. ALSO: The SAT exam in the U.S. featured analogies such as “Butterfly is to caterpillar as ____” and I could have REALLY BENEFITTED from the Speccy software course on REASONING.
Welcome back
I had one of those programmable joystick interfaces. It was actually pretty cool. There was a plugboard that let you connect the joystick functions to a specific key. Plus it let you use the second fire button if your joystick happened to have one. It wasn't just a crappy thing that bolted onto the keyboard.
This doesn’t pertain to this video, but I must thank you for using the Woof! theme in a couple of previous ones. After weeks of agony wondering what the hell the music was, I awoke this morning thinking “DOG.” An hour later I had tracked it down, and started watching old episodes of it, wrecking my ability to do anything worthwhile. My writing career is in tatters. Vinny x
It's only cringe to the easily offended. The rest of us bask in the 80s glory.
I think if anyone was going to be offended by any of these, they'd likely need to wring their knickers out every few hours.
@@RoseTintedSpectrumI'm on the double toooooppppp and I'll win the leg.
180 storey love song, I've got the most you can get.
The fully mashed Bez badge made me spit coffee.
Confuzion is pretty good! Well worth a play. It's kind of like a sliding block puzzle combined with Pipemania. With bombs.
0:40 It's 80's Jabrils! :O
I owned Eureka! for the Commodore 64. It's a text adventure with graphics in multiple parts, each set in different eras of human history, from prehistoric to modern day (1980's). You had to complete each part and use clues from the game and from the manual, which had poems for each part of the game on one side of the of the open manual and a related picture on the other, both containing more clues. Wasn't a bad game overall.
Re: Codename Mat II - I think Zzap! actually used to have Hookability and Lastability categories that they scored games in when reviewing.
🤣
Hm...
I *KNOW* I've seen this footage before!
28:01 I DEFINITELY remember watching a couple of times over the years.
Is Stuart RTS' Geoff Neil now??
I've always thought of Stu as my little Salacious Crumb.
TH-cam reminded me that I hadn’t subscribed. Thanks, TH-cam!
Love the end credits music!!
"Guide Magic Wom on his journey to the secret cavern". I think I saw that on the back of one of my dad's videos back in the day.
I do remember the original 3 parter of this one, I just want to point out that at 8:56 they managed to spell London wrong in the address 😆
They also spelled the name of the game wrong too. "Magic worm" they spelled it "magic word" 😂
The last one was phenomenal
0:37 Adverts are still like this, except unironically.
The "free" watch with the cassette 50 didnt work - well mine didnt.
The orange covering up part of On The Oche is really reminding me of Stone Roses artwork (not just the album, but in general). It's the font and the black border that does it.
The prospect of a dart themed album may well drag Ian Brown out of his live karaoke-tour.
So funny! I miss all this stuff, once the suits took over everything just became safe and boring.
Believe me I'm not complaining at all, and this should be seen as a positive - but i was SO excited for a new video and then very sad when I realised I'd seen these before. I still watched it all again because shit's great.
Yeah, understandable - worth noting why I've done this though, the original videos only ever hit around 800 views, bumping up to 1.5 - 2k when Gamesmaster blew up. Since repackaging and rereleasing them like this, it's gotten more views in under 24 hours than the originals did in 3 years.
It's essentially growing the channel and putting videos in front of a wider audience for very little effort while I concentrate on new videos. And it's absolutely mad that it seems to work as well as it does!
@@RoseTintedSpectrum oh I get it my dude, don't stop chasing the dream. This benefits everybody in the long run.
Shovels at the ready!
Micronet was way more than a database, to be fair. It was a networked dial-up BBS, effectively a forerunner to the web.
You should check out the lonely hearts section of your Sinclair 😮😮
Oh Em Gee - Eureka. By actual Ian Livingstone. I had to look this one up because I couldn’t remember anything about it other than the deep sense of disappointment it left me with at a point at which I should have known better than to expect more than one in five Spectrum releases to actually be any good.
Better than that dragged up memory though is looking for it on TH-cam, only finding one video and that video being played in silence by somebody who clearly has no idea what you’re supposed to do so does that kind of ‘try anything’ mode of gameplay and still never gets anywhere. A classic of the genre.
I had International Karate. The only thing I remember about it was the artwork.
For some of the artwork, I couldn't help but think "it looks like it was created by AI"
Welcome back from your suspension.
This is exactly the reason why the 80s were so good and why today is so bad.
"Kwik Key Kard". Great work, knock off early lads.
From what I remember C64 wasn't much better.
I was guessing the first one was for "101" the great old fashion darts game
Anyone who doesn't think 80's ads could possibly be cringe wasn't conscious for the 80's.
Or has one hell of a nostalgia filter.
Showing actual gameplay screens was optional. Actual design sense was optional. I haven't seen which ads you chose yet, but it's pretty obvious who else hasn't watched the video before commenting.
Nice one. TH-cam really are bar-stewards for doing this.
26:30 guy on the left is clearly pedro pascal.
Great make it a regular thing
26:22 That's Pedro Pascal, isn't it?
I had to check the comments as that was the first thing I thought when I saw that 😂
FYI Reasoning and knowlege are uni philosophy topics. Critical thinking and epistemology. Just thought I'd mention it.
I refuse to reason with anything or anyone, especially my cat.
I know it's easy to take the p-ss, and fun, too, but as a bloke, when was the last time you saw an advert that meant something to you, or at least made you want to buy something?
@@FatNorthernBigot I saw an advert for potatoes the other day and immediately had to eat a jacket potato.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum 😅 Well, now I want a jacket spud. The power of suggestion!
How about remaking those early unlisted Dizzy videos then? Albumen.
😂🍺🍺
Hang on, NO, NO, NO. 23 minutes in and neither of you questioned the statement, "imagine you've poisoned your pet fish"? What? Because that's such a healthy thing to encourage a child to do isn't it?
@@benpeterjohnson7850 everyone's done it at least thrice
Lazy blaze
I'm guilty of buying a couple of games from those piss poor ads,and believing the BS , I particularly remember a football game that came on a C60 tape with a felt tip made inlay ,about 9 quid it cost and it was awful, I didn't learn because i also remember a horse racing prediction game I also ordered, mug
I feel like ive seen this before? Why does it say a few hours ago?
@@craigchampagne7797 it's a release of 3 videos into 1 as an experiment to see if I can relaunch old videos to a newer audience... And, so far, this has gained more views than the original 3 year old videos it came from. The weird world of TH-cam for you.
Dud anyone notice the order form for Magic Worm calls it Magic Word, which makes it sound even more boring
So glad your channel is back!! Stupid TH-cam overlords!!
WTF is a "high score price"? I was expecting some sort of comment on this when discussing Bonkers...
High score *prize. I presume it's another game where you could win £X if you sent in a completion code/high score.
Dat Mugsy, he was a real good fella, see? Back in da dirty thirties, ya get me? A real gangster's game, it was. Read it out loud like dat James Cagney, ya mook!
AMSTRADS FTW
I’m imagine a bra, no but a bra, I meant new, it was autocorrected to bra. I imagine a bra ending, argh
Not bra, a n e w ending to Wear Faces
I don’t know why this is happening. It might be because I just had packet of Walkers and now my fingers are a bit greasy.
What I’m trying to say is I’m imagine a new ending to War Games were at the end Ferris Beuler tells whopper to play Grid Master instead of TicTacTo
And whopper does that, but only learns that “A draw is impossible” and launches all the nukes!
Then after the credits, Annual L Jackson appears and says “Or is it?”
THEEND
*samual not annual
This video has compulsive hookability.
Have I seen this before? I'm 3 minutes in and have severe deja vu
Haha, you most likely have! I'm currently knee deep into Geordie Racer, and I figured it'd be good to drag some series out of the archives, stitch them together and re-release them seeing as the audience potential is now bigger than it was when these were first released.
Gives me more time to get working on new stuff!
@@RoseTintedSpectrum what better way to spend a weekend! Geordie racer! Wonder what spuggy is up to now?
So we have the full series of computer adverts from the 80s in one click? Amazing stuff keep up the good work.
Yep! These are a decent stop-gap while I work on the longer videos, because it seems everything I do now takes at least two weeks!
Glad I'm not the only one - Thought I was going bonkers! 😳
Have I got deja vu again? Glad to see you back mate
Thumbing up before watching. I don’t thumb up any videos hardly so consider yourself lucky;) I am your target audience
