      Lego track pieces are really restrictive in a scale sense

    • @kentslocum
      @kentslocum ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tencents49 I agree. So they should make larger track, or better yet, a system of flexible rails that can be made to whatever scale is necessary.

    I think the picks make sense to fit their existing product lines.
    The space set is like a Lego Art set.
    The Polaroid Camera is similar to the Typewriter as you point out. It's also nostalgic which a lot of their adult sets are.
    The insects will go well with the Botanical as you also point out.
    And the train fits with other Lego trains.
    Wish they had picked the Steampunk ship though.

    Because the Polar Express is tied to an IP, a better way for it to have a chance of winning is for it to be submitted not as “The Polar Express” but as the Pere Marquette 1225. That way is doesn’t have a copyright weighing down its chances.

  • @danhodson7187
    @danhodson7187 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    What got me in to the Ideas theme was the awesome and eclectic builds that could be put out at a really affordable price point, things like Tron, Ecto 1, Dinosaur skeletons, Big Bang Theory, Ship in a bottle, Flintstones etc all for under £100, sometimes well under £100. This meant you could get a really nice collection together without breaking the bank. Now we have Typewriter, Home Alone, Lighthouse, Grand Piano, Globe, Treehouse, Table Football and more all over £200 each, some well over! So while it's good that these insects and space images etc look to be back to the lower price point, the Orient Express is another that looks to be over £200. Basically I'd just like to see them go back to smaller affordable sets and stay there.

  • @nickb.1095

    As a guy who absolutely loves trains, the Orient Express set looks amazing. HOWEVER, the problem I think it will have is being able to be turned into an operating piece. By the looks of it, the drive wheels are not real and are just fake. To me it doesn't look like it would be a functional model aside from putting either a 9v motor on the tender (coal car if you don't know the proper term) or trying to fit some sort of remote control system in the tender either. The thing LEGO needs to understand about their train line of sets is there genuinely is a market out there for realistic but also functional sets.
    Brick Model Railroader and other groups have made fantastic looking models, though they cost quite a lot of money due to their brick count (some being over $2,000 by the end of it). The other thing about their models is they use non-LEGO parts in various places to compensate for official parts not actually existing. A perfect example of a failed set to me was the Emerald Night set they released so long ago now. Why do I say it failed? Well the 1st problem was it didn't even come with Power Functions to begin with and that had to be purchased separately. Not to mention adding it ruined the overall aesthetic of the locomotive. The other was the side rod issue with them constantly jamming, then owners having to refit the loco quite a bit so it would work properly and not constantly get stuck. The Polar Express set to me seems to have a similar design issue with using Technic parts as the side rods...unless that problem could be solved somehow, it would probably have the same issue. What I DO hope LEGO does with this Orient Express set is make it so it can run of LEGO track, either by having the drivers functional or a hideable way to put remote control in it.
    The BMR people have done exactly this, even with their larger models, and they use a 8 stud wide standard. They took the 40 stud radius curves into consideration with most of them and worked around that limit. Yes, there are quite a few of their models that can only operate on larger radius curves, but generally I think LEGO themselves would benefit from actually making official track like that. Train guys would eat it up I'm sure.
    Link to Brick Model Railroader Vid at train show: th-cam.com/video/y2MBLhm3syI/w-d-xo.html
    The other sets in the lineup are rather creative and genuinely fit well as there is something for many kinds of collectors to buy. They did well with selecting them.

    Depending on the final product the Orient Express might be my first Lego train. But worried it'll be priced over $300, which would become more than I'm will to spend. Also concerned about the color, as the room I display Lego in has dark walls, so darker sets aren't super visible. As much as I love the UCS 1989 Batmobile set, I can't see it that well in this space.

      What if you display the train in front of something like a photo? You could find a print of the kind of landscape the Orient Express would’ve traveled through and put it in a frame, with the train displayed in front of it. That way you have a background for the train to contrast against, as well as a pretty picture, so it’s like a little diorama.

How can the house from Hocus Pocus win against Ichirakus ramen restaurant from Naruto or the Soyuz rocket (finally some not NASA affiliated space set)...?! Same thing goes out to the Polaroid - just no! It's going to fail as miserably as the Atari. How did the Orient Express actually won against the Concorde? So despite the description saying he wanted to create something akin to the "Crocodile Locomotive", the design itself seems to say the opposite and looks like another giant and expensive display piece. So I hope the designer and LEGO really take the feedback they received about the Hogwarts Express from the community and finally deliver another practical and desirable locomotive that can be motorized.

    Who would want to buy a brick model of a Polaroid camera, when the real, fully functional thing is (again) easily available and even cheaper?! Plus you cannot use SX-70 film packs in a 600 series camera. Bummer. "Ideas" are not enough, sometimes thinking is required.

    Lego: Oh you like this movie and want a train set based on it?
    The people: YES!!!! I'm so excited this will go great with my other trains in my..
    Lego: it'll be a display set
    The people: ....
    Lego: yeah best we can do really it won't run at all

    As a massive Lego train fan, I truly hope that it can run on Lego train track, and that it is the UCS style (like the crocodile locomotive), but also I’m a bit sad that we didn’t get the Concorde or Boeing 747 cockpit.

    • @VitZ9
      @VitZ9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were never getting the cockpit, and we never will.
      It's much too niche and it goes against the Lego philosophy of having "complete builds" in their sets.

    To each their own, but the "art" sets the Ideas team always seems to gravitate towards bore me to tears, as do the buildable to-scale (or near-scale) versions of real life objects. Apparently they're allergic to actually cool, interesting ideas like modular buildings or steampunk airships. *Occasionally* they throw us who like more conventional subjects for LEGO sets a bone like Barracuda Bay or the Blacksmith, but that's about it.

    I’ve had to stop buying Lego for now. Sucks. Just don’t have the extra budget these days. I’ve been taking apart the 3 in 1 kits and doing the alt builds. Been fun

    I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I love the scale of the most recent Hogwarts Express. Bumping it up made it look so much better than the previous iteration.

      I completely understand. I do believe its a beautiful set. Like I’ve always said… It would a appeal to a small portion of the LEGO community. However, if LEGO wanted to sell a ton… Make the train fit on tracks.

    Hi
    I just can’t get the logic of Lego to take a Train from Lego Ideas Contest? What was wrong just to make a Lego Train without connecting it to Ideas and select something more creative set for Ideas Line… Im happy for train fans and I also ok with this, but still…
