    First off, my condolences Christian. Secondly, the reason I bought the Spitfire/Hainbach instrument was as sign of support. Hainbach's music isn't my cup of tea. But I like the fact that he is out there. Doing his thing. So buying an affordable sample library seemed like a good way to express that. In a way that puts food on his table. Or a new piece of equipment in his rack. Equally so to you and Spitfire. And I got myself a new toy to play with and get inspired by.

    I lost my mom last month, I'm traveling to spread her ashes in all the places she told me before her death. I'm leaving today in the midsts of putting together my audio department for a game development studio.

    Sincere condolences, Christian. Only the other day I was watching an old episode of Midsomer Murders in which your mother played the part of a bored, alcoholic wife of a well-to-do businessman. The scene where she jumped into a swimming pool was hilarious and demonstrated her brilliant skills as an actress and comedienne. She will be sorely missed.

    Really enjoying the content on building the “CEO” side of things - a comprehensive look at marketing strategy and putting yourself out there would be wonderful. Different techniques: what does successful cold calling look like? What does building a successful social media presence look like? etc. Vitally important, but so often overlooked.

    I couldn't agree more about needing a social presence. I live in Lincolnshire, aka 'nowhere' therefore every interesting musical related thing I've achieved is a result of my TH-cam content and the people I've met through the comments section. I'm scoring my first feature film in the next few weeks 😎😁

    • @chriszanf
      @chriszanf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other side of that is those who are not good at 'gaming' social media systems, will lose out.
      A friend made a comment 15 years ago (on a documentary about a group of us who had made the transition from hanging out on an electronic music production forum to organising gigs, and in several cases, multi day festivals all across Europe), that although the internet was a great democratiser for people being able to market and distribute their music (after the revolution of affordable PCs & music software), everyone was literally getting lost in the noise.
      Therefore, those who stand out are those who can work social media.
      The other side of that is that genuine artists find the level of required engagement hard while maintaining authenticity.
      Well done on getting the film scoring gig!

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chriszanf That is true. It's difficult to get anywhere among the shear amount of other people doing the same thing and that only going to become more of a problem. The only way to really stand out then is to do things differently like Christian has mentioned before. I like to spread myself around genre wise and make a lot of daily jams when I've got time which got the attention of the director then I earned his trust by letting him use some of my work for free on his short film projects.
      I'm actually super shit at being in front of the camera and it's only something I've started doing regularly in the last few months but I wish I'd done it much sooner. Hainbach said in one of his videos that 'its the artist that sells the art' which is very true.
      Thanks I'm in my elements when working on film. It's a horror and the director has asked for experimental work from me, yesss 😁

      Theres a few of us Lincolnshire based composers on here 🤘🍻 Congrats on the feature film, getting work in our neck of the woods is 10 times tougher, when you can’t easily get face to face with potential clients. In that way, we are definitely disadvantaged compared to our London based contemporaries, but personally I find the quieter, less chaotic environment to be there own kind of advantage.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic

      @@samshrimpton407 Hey, hi neighbour 🤜🤛 Yeah I've been lucky to have made the contacts that I have already considering how isolated I am here. But yeah it's super super quiet where I live and work now, great for recording at least 😄

    • @samshrimpton407
      @samshrimpton407 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisLodyMusic Haha, hi! It’s no small thing landing a feature film while being so rural! Thats a real accomplishment! I’ve managed to gain a few decent contacts over the years, but it’s been a slow, drawn out and frustrating affair. Explaining to clients that I’d have to take an hours car journey to a train station, and 2 or 3 trains, just to get to Kings Cross…or a 10hr coach journey when they want to meet for lunch in central London the same day, hasn’t always been a good look…neither has referring to people as “duck” 🤣 but I reckon the peace and quiet was worth way more than the convenience of being based centrally.

    Personally I’ve avoided social media for as long as I could. I’ve never been fully convinced of its necessity. I don’t buy into this idea that you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage by not using it. Its just one of many tools. Just because everyones using the same tool, or doing the same thing doesn’t mean you should too, but if you’re not going to use it, you should at least know why your not using it. At the end of the day you have to be visible and while I know I could personally be doing more in that regard, I do think with that same token, if you want to stand out…don’t do what everyone else is doing 🤷‍♂️ just my opinion though.
    Sorry for your loss Christian, can’t even imagine what its like dealing with the loss of a parent, while its being covered by all of the British news media. Hope you and your family are holding up ok.

    • @TheCrowHillCo
      @TheCrowHillCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SamRedfern91 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCrowHillCo Oh I think I get it - she thought it was reverb that she didn’t like, so she had you remove the reverb more and more, and actually the whole time it was the trem guitar that she didn’t like?
      By the time you both realised, it was too late in the process to put reverb back in?

    • @Superdelphinus

      People steeped in classical music education often hate (added) reverb with a passion too. It’s somehow seen as fake and cheating, and diminishes the quality of the music. Stuff that’s absolutely drenched in it I agree, but a little goes a long way.

    Not a great fan of dan’s music but I think he has great ambition. One thing I have noticed as a side note is the lack of diversity in terms of ethnicity in the world of media composition and especially this channel. I wonder how many people from minority backgrounds get the opportunity to go to fancy universities and then have the time to start a TH-cam channel whiles also working full time. Might be an interesting debate to have. Again this is completely separate from Dan keen but I think it’s an interesting topic.

    • @TheCrowHillCo
      @TheCrowHillCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes as a father with a mixed race daughter and someone who didn’t go to uni this is in need of correction. My real concern is the defunding of music education in state education and a fundamental driving force behind the LABS and BBCSO concepts that I have pushed through at spitfire. You will notice our composer magazine features a diverse selection of composers from all walks of life and I hope this helps just a little bit to develop a sense of “I could do that” in people from all backgrounds. There’s more to be done and it’s just about working that little bit harder throwing that net a little bit wider.

    • @Superdelphinus
      @Superdelphinus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good comment and I agree. Nothing against Dan Keen, but he strikes me as coming from the sort of background who’s always likely to end up where he wants to be, whatever the field - I’d be more interested in the stories of some of the other new people you got around the same sort of time.

      fuck ethnicity, the problem is different . I am the proof that “ethnicity” is not that problem. There are a lot of poor people from all kinds visiting elite universities, as i did. Just some unis have issues not having black people, but also black people do not apply so much here in Austria, so is hard to tell

    • @emanuel_soundtrack
      @emanuel_soundtrack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      every art has an element of elite, luck, geniality and work. Dan Keen missed to mention elite and luck, but is normal to think we have all by means of our own efforts. Some people are in better networks, simple as this! Sk,e other people have to work on this additionally, and some other people are just great composers, not great sellers! They maybe don’t need to be, they do music.
