  • Carlo Gesualdo was one of the most illustrious composers in the late renaissance. O dolce mio tesoro, the 8th title from his sixth madrigal book (first published in 1611) is another great example where traditional voice leading and word painting meet with chromatic alterations and the dramatic staging of dissonances that on their own are conventional. The text doesn't necessarily relate to literal "death"; morte/morir, foco (fire) and ardo (burn) being used as a metaphor for sexual climax is a wide spread trope in 16th century Italian madrigal style.
    The score is my own transcription from the 1613 complete madrigal edition by Simone Molinaro. I added a basso continuo line with figuration for analysis purposes.
