Unearthing the Original Tomb Raider, PS1: i don't have a nose review

  • Hey everyone! This month I'm taking a look at one of the most influential PlayStation titles of all time - the legendary Tomb Raider for PS1! This game was undoubtedly revolutionary for its time, and it's not hard to see why. But the question is, does it still stand the test of time?
As usual, I take a look at the game in its entirety. However, it should be noted that I was obviously unable to discuss absolutely every level in the game in great detail as the video would have been excessively long. Instead, I decided to discuss what I considered to be some of the game's most memorable puzzles. And yes, you can tell that I was a little rusty to begin with. Jumping is hard, okay?
Special thanks to Mark David for the request, and to those of you who have recommended Tomb Raider games before - I figured Lara Croft's debut was logical place to start. No special thanks to the guy who decided to start mowing his lawn partway into my recording this video.
    Notes:
16:22 - I say it’s a wooden door. At least I think it’s wooden. It looks wooden. It might not be though. Does anybody really care that much? I don’t know. I’m overthinking.
17:22 - I say you need more hieroglyphs to enter the sphinx, but you actually need to find two ankhs. Ankhs are technically hieroglyphic symbols anyway though, so I guess I’m being a little pedantic.
19:55 - I chose the take with the best delivery here and later realised I’m not doing finger guns properly. It just looks like I’m blowing my fingers for no reason. Oops.
24:42 - Not sure why this scene randomly looks really bright but you can still see what’s happening, assuming you weren’t blinded.
Finally - I want to make it clear that, while at times I can sound a little overly critical, I am well aware that this game was impressive for its time, both in terms of the graphics and gameplay.

I love how organic this game is. Everything happens in realtime, nothing happens in cutscenes unlike anniversery. When you open doors, you can move around during it’s opening.

These games had a HUGE impact on me as a kid and I absolutely love them. This game does kinda suffer from first game syndrome but it still has a place in my heart non the less.
It had quite a few ports and while the PS1 is one many people grew up with I find that tweaking the PC version is how your going to get the best experience out of it, but its easier due to being able to save everywhere.
    Great review! :D!

I always love coming across anyone making retrospectives/reviews of the old TR games, it’s interesting seeing someone’s perspective that doesn’t know these games inside and out. 😁
Some fun facts: The super slow gameplay is an issue with the PAL version of the game. The NTSC versions of the game play at a much more normal rate. It’s also funny you point out how monotone Lara is. Shelley Blond, the voice actor for Lara, has said that she tried to bring more emotion to Lara when recording the game back in 96’, but the directors kept telling her to bring it back, and play it more cool and monotone, it drove her nuts, haha. 😅

The awesome thing about this game is that there are no real dud levels. Every level has nice main areas to explore. Natla's mines might be slightly less interesting, but on the whole, every level is memorable for some reason.

I think my friend used to own the original Tomb Raider game on PS1. I also bought the first game from PSN store recently for the PS3. In all honesty, if people want to experience Tomb Raider in a modern age, I would highly suggest playing Tomb Raider Anniversary, which can be bought for PS2, PS3 and Steam. I bought the HD Collection for Tomb Raider Trilogy that comes with Tomb Raider Anniversary, Underworld and Legend. Tomd Raider Anniversary is pretty much a remake of the first game that was made by game developers who actually loved the original game. Same way that Resident Evil 1 Remake was made. Two remakes in my opinion that are done right. Now days, I'm just tired of remakes and reboots, since it feels like that modern western creators don't have any original ideas of their own and even if they do, it always gets ruined by bad or mediocre writing. Hence why I still prefer playing and buying older games on older systems like the PS2 and PS3.

Funny, but nonsense. The jumps in classic TR are absolutely predictable due to the tile based control scheme.

Great impression, I played this a year ago for my first time, only knowing the later entries and after a while where I had to adapt to the slow controls I was really having a lot of fun with it, even more as with the reboots. The reason is the challenging level design that doesn't hold your hand, like in the reboot, these are really tombs, with tons of interesting traps and puzzles it's so concentrated, its just fun puzzling and shooting your way through.
Also the save system added to a feeling of suspense. Sometimes you have save crystals on central places and have to plan ahead when you want to use them, a great example was the vertical hub in St. Folis with all these pretty dangerous trials.
Really cool and i'm looking forward playing the sequels.

Great video Michael as always. Tomb Raider is one of my favourite game franchises. Never got chance to fully enjoy the original PS1 version myself as a child.
I didn’t have the patience back then to deal with all of the technical issues either. Didn’t begin to fully appreciate it until Tomb Raider Anniversary released and I got to experience it in a modern remastered take.
My journey with this franchise began first with Tomb Raider Legend and then Tomb Raider Underworld.
Then it began to grow into one of my favourite games with the release of the new trilogy of Tomb Raider (2013), Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

  • @paintedjaguar
    @paintedjaguar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Does it stand the test of time? Absolutely, but not on a console. You need to be playing on a PC with graphics upgrade patches, a decent save system, and Internet access to hints, walkthrus, and other emergency resources. Controller optional - it's quite possible to move very well using a keyboard re-mapped to a two-handed pseudo FPS scheme (start mapping from a touch typing position with hands on the home keys).
