Nairobi is the Political, Financial, Industrial and Commercial hub of Kenya the tourism aspect is very new to Nairobi. The restaurants and night clubs in Nairobi are targeting locals but it is a welcome improvement if tourists are also enjoying the nightlife. My advice is if you are a tourist in Nairobi plan your itinerary as a tourist, if you chose to explore whats outside the tourism circuit it might not meet your expectation because as I stated earlier most of Nairobi is not designed for tourism.

Homeless people on the street and groups of people hanging around corners should not be a culture shock to an American. C'mon are you kidding me. United States of America has the worst homeless situation in the whole world trust me, I live in Los Angeles. The homeless situation is so bad here I have never seen such a thing in Kenya. Those people/kids ask everyone for money, including us locals, and them giving Mpesa as an option is always elite...they're at times transported elsewhere by the government, but they'll find their way back into the streets. There are no food banks that they should consider implementing. For security after the attacks in a major mall years ago in Kenya, we must take precautions to protect the people and businesses.

Kenya was the first country in the world to create mobile money transfer in 2007 and we are the leading country in that. Some people can go months without holding physical cash or going to the bank. Its that efficient 😉
Kids on the streets and beggars are usually victims of human trafficking and organized crime groups from Tanzania. Kenyan kids are more likely to be involved in petty crime and drugs, especially in Eastlands. This video gives context, th-cam.com/video/sz8ZyCmV0N8/w-d-xo.html. . Upto 2004, there was a proper scheduled and organized bus transit system ran by the city and Stagecoach company that rans train services in Scotland. Matatus existed but as paratransit, and had lots of cat and mouse with the police. Matatus, street business are more political, because they are methods of laundering and politicians buying influence. In the 90s, forced spending cuts by the World Bank/IMF, public services were cut drastically or privatized. Sewer systems, drainage systems, garbage collection, markets were never expanded or maintained since then. Also led to an explosion of kiosks and liquor dens. It also affected public health, public schools, public security. This is why so many private hospitals, private schools and private guards. These were practically unheard off before the 90s, because the state services were better than private. Cuts also meant that city planning regulations, building codes have not been enforced since the 90s. There is a survey that found that 80% of buildings in Nairobi are illegal or did not consult professionals, especially in the Eastlands.
