Sadly, a 'dead mall' video finally hits a mall that was very near and dear to me as a youngster. Spent so much time here, especially as a teenager. More memories than I could hope to count. Thanks for the video!

There’s just something about dead malls that seem so fascinating to me. I think it has to do with all the memories that were created there. And when you go back in time to see what the mall was like along time ago I think that is really cool.

The Victoria Secret was that store that had the pink polka dots on the wall. It was attached to the black walled store that had all those chairs in it. All of that was Victoria's & the polka dot room was where they had there "Pink" labeled items. Pretty sure.

I'm 17 now and watching this sorta makes me sick. I remember coming here when I was 2 all the way until I was a teen. To see massive part of your childhood in ruins leaves you feeling weird. It's a really uncomfortable feeling. Like you've lost a family member you never knew. I remember going to the glow in the dark mini golf for a couple birthday parties and then going to the food court after. Sad

It’s honestly crazy to me, I used to go this mall all the time. It had many people. Then bridge steer came and it gradually started going more and more downhill. I remember the alarm going off when I was at Sears before it closed. Thank you so much for doing this vid. It bring back so many memories:)

seeing this mall like this breaks my heart. I grew up in Franklin County TN and this mall was my childhood hangout. My mom passed away last year and she and I would make trips to Huntsville every month and this mall was our spot. I got my ears pierced at that Claires. Mom bought me a new comforter bed set at the JCPennys there when I was a teenager. We did all our Christmas shopping here. I built memories with my family here and it breaks my heart to see it gone.

Not surprised. Looking at the area it's in, Huntsville, Alabama. It's not in a dense population, tons of spaced out everything, open fields of nothing surrounding the mall. Where I live, the malls are surrounded by people, neighborhoods, in a veryyy packed dense population so malls don't have that problem about staying in business.

    • @jasondonnelly1888
      @jasondonnelly1888 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ocean You're pretty right about Everything spaced out. When this mall was being constructed, it was literally a field with one road. That specific area now is very bustling.

In Texas, there are plenty of malls that were built far outside of Houston and Dallas, and they always are the most dominant and successful, and typically kill off the older ones closer to the center, due to the fact that they lack the issues of crime.

The Valley View Mall, just outside of Dallas (LBJ and Preston) is about to be shut down, as well. The owner's plans are to demolish the mall and turn it into an upscale mixed shopping/living district, rebuilding the Mall AMC into it's own building (AMC had a long term contract with the mall).
It's looking like late 2017 may be the earliest before the mall officially shuts down.

The Sbarro you were thinking of was on the side with the arcade, next to the China King if I'm remembering correctly. I remember I'd always hop in the arcade after looking around FYE, play some Initial D, then get a slice or two at Sbarro before going home.
I actually went here sometime around June last year and it was already pretty much a ghost town with just a few shoe stores open. Even though it's been slowly going downhill for the past ten years it's still pretty sad to see it go.

Our mall had a business dating to 1985 that moved out 3 years ago because the rent was too high. They moved into another 1/2 dead mall. Give them a rent break for being practically the only business there. Old Navy moved out, but Red Robin moved in. Weird.

I think Dan Bell did a Video on this Mall when it went dead. This Mall is so beautiful. Thankyou for sharing your Memories. I used to frequent the Methuen Mall in Methuen MA in the late 70s, 80s and 90s alot and have alot of fond Memories. Methuen Mall closed down in the mid 90s and was demolished in 1999. The Malls are slowly dying out due to Internet Shopping, Wal-Mart, Target. It's sad. I can't believe they left the Boxes of Reeses lying round like that. Wow! Great Video! Bright Blessings to you and Beckah Rick! Blessed Be! 🌛🌝🌜

There are quite a lot of these abandoned malls all across America. A lot I grew up with (one in particular) in my area have been torn down, replaced or reused as office space...it is quite the American phenomena. An interesting part of our cultural history really. I watched an interesting documentary about the rise and fall of Mall across America. Really interesting stuff. I miss them.

Okay, this was so cool! I moved to Huntsville in 2001. I worked at American Cafe (aka Am Caf) and Yankee Candle! I haven't been in there since I left in 2006. I heard AmCaf just closed down with no notice. Even the GM didn't know. They all showed up and the doors were locked! But I was a bartender and server there. The food was great! And I really loved working there. Great times! Thanks for going inside. So sad to see it in that condition. Wow!
My girls grew up in that mall for 5 years. So many great memories. The fashion show you mentioned, we were there! And they loved Time Out! Also, the smoothie place was my fave! I loved their peach banana smoothie. Lol
I am back in Cali now but got to visit Huntsville in 2018 and drive by the old mall location and saw it was completely demo'd and something new was in it's place. So sad. :(

That store you were in at the very beginning was Mcrae's. It closed 10+ years prior to the mall closing they completely sheet rocked over the inside top and bottom floor entrances. See it at 22:59
10:04 Turning left would have one TEAM store on left, and then hit sheetrock from Mcraes.
11:49 Big store in front was a Hallmark then became a glow in the dark golf place, a few years before the closing of the mall.
12:46 was a smoothie stand it, it closed years before the mall closed.
13:01 obvious jewelry store to the left.
13:07 was a coffee shop that had been closed for 10+ years.
The store next to it was a bathroom showcase "store" and before that used sale nik-naks i believe or was it candy, that closed way before i could remember, only remember the distinct rainbow esque tile, that was still in there behind the show case curtain.
    13:19 was a finish line.
14:31 was a Disney store it too closed years before the mall closed, was later rented out during Halloween for a "spook house".
14:43 was men boutique closing store for more ethnic tastes.
14:56 was a Victoria's Secret and across from that was an American Eagle.
16:55 clockwise, was a nail place, master cuts, and Buffalo Wild wings, i believe a white collar loan place (IDK), salon, and wet seal(they were giving away clothes when the company went under lol).
17:02 Right hand side Top and Bottom where Jewelry stores. Middle was upper and bottom level of Dillard's. Left Top was a boutique for purses and perfumes and bottom was a few things, but Alabama/Auburn store and then a another salon/haircut place from my memory.
17:54 nik-naks and board games store.
18:01 clock wise, Canvas, Gymboree , and right side NY&Company(dont quote me), and The Barn Candle Co.
18:21 3 stores on the left jumped hands so many times, one in the middle was a maternity clothing store.
18:36 Great American Cookie, or something. To the left of it was Charlotte Russe(dont quote me).
18:52 On left was Oxford Street, the oldest "non-anchor" store in the mall was there since the 80's i believe. (was a suit store).
18:54 store in middle was an EB Games.
19:07 It was a bouquet like place it switch hands many times.
19:25 In the center of that plaza area used to be a crossed escalator. They removed it, when they renovated the mall.
19:29 Was a Parisians till Belk bought them out, it had extra floor in it between the first and second, it was pretty cool.
19:40 big store on right, switched hands so many times, was seasonal store (christmas), then Car Showcase, and mens boutique.
store on the left was a Kirklands type store, dont think it was Kirklands.
19:51 Place in the left corner was an office not a store, and the place on the right switch hands many times, i believe it was a place where they sold place sets like those massive backyards forts with swings on side.
21:33 GMC, ABC Toys, RadioShack, Claire's, Verizon.
21:39 was a Dillard's Mens at one point it changed hands a few times before closing perm.
21:41 Right side first was that TOP LEFT boutique from 17:02, childrens place(i think), oriental express or something, old Pac Sun(close 10 - 15 years before hand), then the high end childrens place next to the jewelry place seen at 35:58.
21:44 Left side, spa place(), City Gear, Pretzel place, bookstore(non brand), photography place, Yankee Candle, and Hibbetts. Skip over the left turn, Journeys, Spencers, and a baked goods/smoothie place(on the outside of the food court.) turn left you start going into the food court. The furthest store with the blue and red strips was a Star Bucks at one point and then a shoe store.
22:40 There is a store in between the old Star Bucks and Sears, it was an Art Gallery.
22:55 was the final resting place of the computer store you mentioned it used to be a jewelry store before hand.
23:23 - 23:29 LIDS, another Team store,a nail place i believe, GameStop, and KB toys.
28:11 outside you had Right to left American Cafe(IDK), FYE, wedding store/suit rental and then back to Hibbetts.
32:58 IS a big skip to the otherside of the mall, in Cinnabon, across was a jewelry store(not shown to the right was a high end childrens store mentioned above), to the left was the OG Victoria's Secret spot that became a Shop Dept Encore which stretched to the JC PENNY's seen earlier (TOP floor).
    * GAP IN VIDEO TOP FLOOR Between Elevator and JC PENNY"S was skipped (except for the above Cinnabon).
Between the elevator, on the left side first was Men's Dillards, high end womens botique store, Aeropostale, a movie store that sold anime stuff, reg movies and nsfw movies(hardcore FYE) and one other store in between it and Cinnabon. Past Cinnabon on the left side of the mall you get Parisians/Belk then across the way going towards JCPENNYS you have an old ATT/Cingular store, womens boutiuqe store, a gothy/alt makeup place, CMI computers OG spot, and Mark's Imports, then JC Pennys.
FOOD COURT FROM RIGHT TO LEFT IN A CIRCLE:
    Greek Gyro
    Arby's then a massage place
    Bathrooms
    Subway
    Cajun Grill
    Taco Bell
    Sukuros, Japanese Grill
    Chick-fil a
Random Burger place changed hands quite a few times
Same for the next one after that.
And that big white spot at the far end was McDonalds It closed 15+ years before the mall closed.
American Restaurant, i think thats what it was called, later used to store unused Arcade Machines.
27:13 You can see the Arcade, Called Time-Out and then something else after they changed owners.
27:47 Sbarros and to left of that China Wok, it wasn't shown, next to that was a candy place.
note when i say boutique that is just a guess i was younger and didn't care too much about women's clothing or brands.
Why the hell did i just type all this...
Just for documentation purposes, plus i grew up in that mall and loved it.

this was so cool and my first abandoned mall vid where like you said, there wasn't any vandalism yet .... really great job guys and you did your best to deal with the issue of the alarm affecting your taping . It is so sad to see the mall experience where teens meet up and hang or families gone by the way side ... we would spend so much time there before going to the movies etc (not at this mall) .. I just hate all the huge corporate companies squishing all the smaller really specialty stores...bummer and the malls are so huge and overwhelming now ...not like these ones .

I couldn't believe it when the elevator opened up, WHY IN THE HECK WOULD YOU COVER UP THAT AMAZING SKYLIGHT IN THAT RESTAURANT??!!!, Props to you for staying there and dealing with that fire alarm I'm sure your ears were probably still ringing for awhile after you left, I've also never seen an escalator layout like that before (the escalators in Belk) that was different. Plus you don't need to worry about battery power the mall clearly still has power all you had to do was find an outlet lol!

That's really cool. Other than my military and contracting time between 2003 and 2012 I lived in Huntsville. I, like you, hadn't been in the mall for years even after I lived back in Huntsville. The last time I was in the mall I bought a tool kit from Sears in 2009. It's really cool to see what the mall looked like right before it's demise. I use to do some abandoned store exploring in high school so this is pretty cool to see.

I would love to see some video of this mall in it's prime.
My buddy and I lived in Sherwood Park growing up and used to ride our motorcycles through the woods to the construction site when they were building it (lots of hills and stuff for dirt bikes)...and I watched a year or so ago when they tore it town...it was actually a pretty sad scene...my playing "I Remember You" by Skid Row didn't help matters any :P
TONS AND TONS of memories at this mall....thanks for posting this.

Your video is Awsome and great work. I'm from Jamestown, N.Y. and the mall near by (warren mall in P.A) has only 2 stores left after Kmart left everyone else followed suit. You too inspire me cause I love old abandoned houses, hospitals, and jails. Please keep up the great work. Thanks, Rick C.

Great video. I went to this mall alot, sad to see what happened to it. It was still doing ok up until a few years ago. Last time I was in the mall many of the stores had already closed. A few things I want to point out:
The store at 14:28 used to be a Disney store. It closed a long time ago and no one else ever took it over.
The Software, ect. was located near the Sears, right in front of the Food Court. It later became a Gamestop.
The CMI Computer store later moved to the store at 22:42.
The Time-Out eventually closed and a video game store called Classic Game Vault took it's place. They had arcade machines you could play where you were standing at 28:15.

Grew up in Alabama particularly the Limestone/Madison County area, and this mall had a lot of fond memories for me. Last time I went was back in the summer of 2010 before I moved up to New Jersey, and at that time, the Mall itself wasn't doing that well because there was tons of stores that closed which Parkway Place was destroying the competition. It is sad to see that this mall was demolished earlier this year as it was a huge part of my childhood growing up in Huntsville, and I hope whatever they put in the mall's place does well business-wise.

Great video! It is rare to get to see an abandned mall before the vandals take over
20:53 - The elevator probably forgot where it was, so it went slow to relearn where it was.

Don't quote me on this but the American Cafe still exists. They renamed it to City Cafe Diner in Huntsville. You still have the opportunity to check it out. I typed in American Cafe on google and that popped up so that usually means it's just renamed.

Also, malls can still thrive if run correctly, and management is engaged. There is a nearby outdoor mall in Huntsville that is generally very busy. Another across town is doing well and it was the result of demolishing an old dead mall and building a very nice one anew. Same location, but plenty of business, where the old one was dead. In Tullahoma TN, for many years there was a dying mall, new ownership, effort, and that mall is alive again. Opry Mills in Nashville is always very busy.
You can't just slap them there and folks show up like the old days, that's for sure. Malls can still have a future as long as the ownership makes an effort and runs them smartly. No more just building a mall and charging stores outrageous rent and rolling in the dough. You gotta work for it.

For those wondering about the fire alarm- The fire alarm originally sounds like the one here: th-cam.com/video/6SVcV8c6hKY/w-d-xo.html and it finished its "voice cycle". They were trying to drain the panel batteries. I got this information from a group of fire alarm enthusiasts, who said he contacted the mall owners.

Everyone blames the downfall of malls from on line shopping. Actually, A mall becomes a hangout for kids that parents drop off for the day. Also, some people stay for the day because they don't have air conditioning. The rest of us get tired of screaming tired kids that parents refuse to take home for a nap, or take them to a pool or playground. Also downtown malls have the homeless who hang out in them and panhandle. Malls thrive in communities or areas where certain groups of people live and areas not in walking distance of a downtown area.

Im gonna say the reason why the elevator was so slow was due to it being low on oil or there was a pump issue. The motor didn't sound healthy either. It could be also that it was low on power. The reasons why the alarms could be going off is because of a malfunction or somebody snuck in and pulled it.

  • @leehurley8358

At 27:52 it was Time Out along time ago then Tilt took over. Then two friends of mine put in an arcade/retro game store in 2013 called Game Galaxy. It was a free play arcade and you paid for either a 30 min, 1 hour or all day pass. I managed the store for over two years.

  • @waltz666

The store at 15 minutes was Victoria's Secret, with Pink being in the polka dotted room. I was a manager there when the store closed for the last time in March 2016. I heard that after we closed they started using it to store mall furniture that was being auctioned off, hence the random limbs and chairs from various stores around the mall. That fire alarm frequently went off even while I was working there before Victoria's Secret closed, and sometimes it would go off in our store too and the customers would all get irritated and leave, but mall management told us it was coming from the old Belk store and that there was "nothing they could do about it" because Belk still owned the space.
Also, a lot of those corporate stores are required to take their signs down. At Victoria's Secret, corporate contractors came in after we closed to take all of the signs and pictures of models, etc. to destroy. I guess they don't want the negative association. The checkered tile restaurant was a gyro/Greek place in 2015 and the Chinese place was to the right of it, a couple storefronts to the left of Time Out. The place at 25:06 was Sarku Japan.

14:08 That used the be the Disney Store.
15:00 That used to be Victoria Secret.
17:17 There was a big eyebrow threading stand. I'm not sure what the name of it was.
I worked there for about a year in 2013-2014 at a little Barbizon stand. For the most part it was about empty and it was so cool to walk around and look at everything on my lunch break.
