Thanks for making this video- even though you didn't record your disassembly process, your instructions and photos are quite clear and make it easy to disassemble the E-M5. I think this is still the only E-M5 disassembly guide on the internet!

Thank you so much for this, I had the same problem as you with the mode dial switching back and forth, it was driving me nuts. Turns out mine had black streaks on the contacts, my camera works flawlessly now that gunk is all cleaned away. Thank you for being brave enough to do this first.

Mine is doing the same thing, guess I'll take the risk and open it up!

Thanks for making this video, it was really helpful for me in fixing my own E-M10. The disassembly is almost exactly the same. I actually have fixed two different E-M10s this way, both were damaged by salt water and I fixed them by washing the circuitry out with distilled water (1st camera) and alcohol (2nd camera). Your video gave me the confidence to charge ahead and give it a try. I made a video of the second repair for anyone looking for more help with the disassembly/assembly.

Hello. I have a problem with pasm dial. I found completely the upper part of the camera with all the dials and flash. But there are some wires that holding the upper part to the main camera. Is this wires easy to disconnect and connect them again?

Thanks for the info, there is no info on this anywhere. It was better to have a video no matter how low quality but there are plenty of info to disassemble it easily and the explanation really helps if one needs to disassemble it.

Thanks for making the video. My mode dial is switching modes like mad and the camera is un-usable because of it. I'll have to try and take this apart to clean the mode dial.

Thank you Kevin for this valuable insight into where most of the screws and weather strips are located.i am about to strip mine down for the purposes getting the sliders on the sensor stabilization motors to return to parked positions
I believe this can cause banding issues from the sensor when the IS behavior is erratic.I heard that the sensor that olympus used in this model is manufactured by Sony.I hope to upload a video of a successful repair ( Or how I made a paperweight).Olympus never release service manuals or how tos so your upload is very useful.

john cordey You're welcome. Obviously a better quality disassembly video would be very valuable, especially if you go that deep into the body.

The EVF on my camera has gone all white. I figured the board for the EVF might have blown but someone suggested the cable going to the EVF is glued and perhaps the glue has come apart. Do you have any experience with this issue and a possible repair?

Thank you for this precious explanations Kevin. I need to change the eye view finder assembly, and despite the fact that you dissasembled the camera quite a long time ago, would like to ask this: do you think (remember) would it be posible to remove the eye view assembly by unscrewing only the two exposed screws at the top of it? (They are positioned right below the plastic cover for the accessory port.)

Hi Kevin, do you have a higher-resolution picture of the image @ 7:15 in your video.
I have an EM-5 and the strap lug on the left came off. I think it's only a loose screw. I'm trying to figure out from your photo if the screw is accessible as soon as I take off the front-left rubber grip, or if I have to dig in further. Thanks!

hexr8d Hi hexr8d, I can't provide you anything better than a 640x480 screenshot (uncompressed, though) here:
      imgur.com/WuFconb
The webcam I used for the video didn't allow me to make better pictures and if it did, detail clipped to black and original files are not available anymore.

***** thanks for the picture. At the right side of the picture, nearest the strap lug, it does seem there's an exposed screw which attaches the strap lug. Can you confirm, if you remember, if it's an accessible screw?

Thank you very much for this dissemble tutorial!
My camera is behaving irratically after a day in the snow, and i can see white residue on the accessory port (lost the cover for it)
I'm wondering if its ok to let the camera dry by itself, or if the white residue will cause corrosion in the future?
After all it's snow, hence pure water.
Would be happy to hear your opinion, thanks again!

      @KevinDarras  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Rotislav, thanks for your feedback.
I believe that anything but distilled water would leave unwanted residues and hence cause your camera to behave erratically. I would not worry about corrosion over a period of a few days though, but I'm only an amateur.
If you know the snow was dirty, I would open up the camera and clean it. If it wasn't so dirty (then again you see residues), try drying it with silica gel, a hair-drier and/or patience, and see if it comes back to normal.
Though my guess would be that you will have to open it and clean it.
In my case, I had the accessory cover in place but the water still went through by capillarity.

I think the residues at the accessory port is due to dust accumulated there, perhaps there is no residue inside the camera because the snow was clean (hence distilled)
I've put it in a bag of Silica gel and used hand drier for a while, i'm happy to say that after a week my camera is back to life and 90% working normal, (sometimes there are some unwanted dial mode changes)
Think i wont be dissembling it.
      Thanks for the help!

      Rostislav Alexandrovich
The unwanted mode changes were exactly the reason why I disassembled mine. Apparently the water went the same way in your camera as in mine, and there should be residues.

Does anyone know what would cause the EM-5 to completely freeze after taking couple of shots and then it only shows a black image on the LCD screen and the shutter won't work anymore until removing the battery for few minutes? I heard somewhere that it might require CPU reflow.

Mine is getting that, in the error logs it is something "stuck shutter" it got progressively worse and now I cannot take a photo at all.
it's going to be way too expensive to send it in for repairs for me so I tried taking it apart and cleaning it out with some alchohol. Holding thumbs it will loosen up what ever was causing the shutter to get stuck. I could not fully disasemble it though due to one screw for the top cover not budging. Oh well... I doused the whole thing in a 99% isopropyl bath and if it no longer works when I put it back together then so be it... Haha

Hi Kevin. The part of the camera that holds the strap, fell off of my EM-5 yesterday. From the looks of your pics it seems like I'd have to take the whole front of the camera off to get to that. Is that true? Thank you very much.

Take the battery off for two three days.
Open when curtain ready, don't press shutter.
And hit the can from aunder with your palm.
      Like a shaky slap.
      That would do.it
