We worked on a 1900 water wheel that produced electricity. The old co generation system was all open bus and wiring behind a later added chain link fence. The company ripped all that old stuff out in the 1980s and replaced it with modern equipment of the time. The wheel itself was not touched and was horizontal under water with a huge steel shaft coming off it. The whole thing was 3 stories high and the canal was drained. After over a year of work it was time to test the system out. The speed of the wheel was regulated by a giant DC motor that applied a higher voltage from the generator to act as a break. It was considered as a waste of power that could be used to generate more power. A breaking system was used to replace the DC motor. They let water back in the canal and everything was working fine for awhile until the break exploded and the wheel took off uncontrolled. They had tons of steel 3 stories high spinning so fast the entire mill was shaking. It felt like an earthquake. They evacuated the building and it took several hours to drain the canal to stop the wheel. To this day it has never turned again. There was no way to inspect the wheel for damage, stress cracks, and was considered too unsafe to ever use again. The breaking system was replaced with a much larger one but never tested. It still is all there in an empty papermill in Holyoke, MA USA.
Need so e help here. In watching a few of these videos I have heard speakers refer to a location as having a "cob" (sp?) wall. Can anyone provide some insight into the make up and construction of these walls?
@@Rocwallaby Much thanks. Sounds like it would take quite a bit of material to support a load so I'm thinking that it was used more as a plaster of sorts.
Aha! So glad you posted - the voice was familiar but failing to identify it was driving me crazy, and I couldn't find him credited anywhere. Yes, I believe you're right. And he does it very well.
Henry VIII was given the title of "Defender of the Faith" by the Pope for his vigorous defence of Catholic teaching: but kept that after he seized the Church's property and replaced their authority and teaching with the new Protestant theologies.
It’s wonderful to know that Phil was recreating historical objects before Time Team.

I've only been able to find 2 Time Traveler episodes. Have you found any more?

Glad to know through their work these folks will live on long after we're gone. Cheers lads.
Love it!!!! Thank to all and particulary to the one we all learned to apreciete the "presence" of Professor MICK ...GRATITUDE!
Young Phil´s golden Locks curling in the wind. A sight to behold.
Phil was 41 in this video. He just turned 70 this year.
@@dirtrusty7228 still looks good all that fresh air
His accent is not as strong in this film.
@@dirtrusty7228 time is cruel 🤔
🔥🔥🔥
I would love to see future history classes in school teach basic archaeology.
Agreed.. that is if history is not 'cancelled' by the fear driven ignorant baffoons :)
So good to see Mick here.. I just discovered this series and love his presentations.. Thank you rrc713
This is like Time Team the prequel, never even knew it existed!
Good grief, Mick and Phil so young and handsome 😚.
Mick always was rooting around in Granny's cupboard, bless his soul.
I have graduated from Time Team to this, Yes!
The way that young fellow tosses those bits of pottery about makes me wince every time 🙈

(background) There's a man that knows how to use his tool! If you've hoed, split wood, sledged or picked, I'm sure you can appreciate!
Wow so amazing to see everyone young again! 💖 Great archeology as well! 💖
I love the music to these videos
Phil looks like he played part time in Led Zepplin lol love this guy would love to share a pint
With Phil you need to be prepared for more than one pint.
He was in a blues band, he is a blues stringer and although I have never had the privilege of hearing him play, I have no doubt he is a damn good one.
awww look at young Phil!
The humble hedge❤️
Phil and Mick!
thank you!
were any tests done on these cooking pots to determine if they were actually cooked in, and what was cooked in them?
❤
I'm probably wrong but I've just decided that the narrator sounds like Peter Reynolds.
His voice isn't as rich but then he was much younger!
More like Richard Briers ( Tom Good in the Good Life)
@@bobwilcox1147 Possibly Ray Brooks? He narrated the TV kids show 'Mr Benn' - and his voice sounds VERY similar!
Wiki says Ray Brooks

Bruce Sims mud, straw and some dung

There are some cob houses still being made in the UK- you can see some on grand designs!
@@brucesims3228 No it is structural. Watch the old man and the teen in the last episode making a cob wall and explaining how it is done.

Narrator to the kids TV series "Mr. Benn". That's from where I knew the voice.
But they didn't have corn in the middle ages?
What do the British mean when they say corn ?
Before 1492 they didn't have what the Americas call corn or maize.
It's English for any cereal crop such as wheat, barley, spelt etc. I expect the Oxford English Dictionary will give a full list and explanation.
what a drag it is getting old la la lalalala......lol
The monarch may be the defender of the Church but not ITS head. That is quite contrary to Jesus teachings to give up the world!

Thank God Tony came along
Tony was an arrogant lech. Source: I was at uni with people who worked on Time Team.
First!?
Richard briers narrator maybe.
