- The original roof was held up by a traditional truss system. Our homeowners want to create a cathedral ceiling in this third-floor bonus room. Kevin finds Tommy and Charlie installing a beam system that will support the roof without the truss.

The new addition will include a mudroom and bathroom. Because theres no attic above, it makes sense to bring ductwork and plumbing in from existing basement mechanicals and branch off into crawl space below the rooms. Kevin finds Mark McCullough starting the process of breaking through the existing stone foundation. Our Idea House is where we test new products. Kevin travels to New Canaan, Connecticut and meets builder Gordon Jacobsen who is installing a device for bringing natural light into dark areas of the house: its called a sun tunnel. Our homeowners have asked for a number of cooling zones. In a conventional HVAC system that could mean up to a half dozen condensers outside. Kevin finds Richard working on a more up to date plan that recuses the condenser count to two.

The apparently endless wealth of some of these people is amazing.
I ran across the very first season the other day. One of the episodes was Bob Vila showing people how to refinish the refrigerator so they could save money and not have to buy new appliances. Things have definitely changed. I still love the show, but I really enjoy the ones where they do something the real world could afford more.
It scared the crap outta me watching them remove big rocks from the foundation!

Kevin is the perfect personification of the audience this show morphed into when they sold out and Vila left b/c he couldt do commercials b/c "PBS was publicly funded"...
Oddly the reason he wasn't allowed to do Rickel's (building supplier) commercials was b/c PBS had already sold exclusivity of TOH to Home Depot and Weyerhaeuser.
This show is like a microcosm of what happened in this country between the 70s and the 90's
I can remember watching This Old House decades ago and being amazed watching Tom Silva using a crane to thread a beam down the middle of an existing house.
What a great tutorial on installing a ridge beam!
Hahahah... Try to spec out those LVLs, then engineer the bracing and nailing schedule and figure out how "three LVLs" alone will compensate for the removal of the collar ties (ridge beams and collar ties perform 2 different functions in a roof structure). ... then try to get price quotes and a supplier for the LVLs.
I think you will find this tutorial lacking in some critical details.

did something similar. it helped to first cut the nails protruding through the roof.
While this ridge-beam replacement exercise, with truss removal, is FANTASTIC to watch... WHERE is the structural engineering (numbers?) to justify such a dangerous change? You have replaced multiple triangles with a great big pentagonal cylinder. I don't have to be a structural engineer to question this.
Well it's obviously just not shown, they have to get these plans drawn up.. you can't just wing it because it will get inspected lol

@@frankm5019 well it cost $350 just to put new refrigerant in my A/C unit at my house and that thing is 10 years old and it cost $200 to in some plumbing work under my sink..
@@frankm5019 every bit of it. There's thousands of dollars in lumber and screws just for bracing. It takes a long time to build a house. It takes twice as long to gut and remodel. That's why you see cool old buildings being torn down and rebuilt as opposed to fixing what is there.
Remodels can be a frustrating undertaking. I enjoy doing it but it's hard. You can have 2 or 3 carpenters making $30 an hour stuck in one room for days sometimes trying to retrofit. That ads up quick.
Even new construction, you'd be surprised to know how much work goes into a single room in your house.

We have 2 sun tunnels in our living area it is awesome.
How can you watch tv with sun tunnels? you cannot My tv and bedrooms' have light blocking material to well see the screen.. Ever hear of screen glare... Sun tunnels for hallways.. Sky lights just suck energy.. Hot in summer cold as heck in winter..ever hear of thermal shock.. I had a monster home in marboro mass over 4k and it had a hugh sky light in kitchen and master bath... some in the family room too... The heat in summer was unbearable.. I looked into movable sun shades.. The master was cold in the winter the thermal shock was brutal.. ME sky lighting sucks.. Led lighting is so efficient and energy saving.. 12 homes has made me a smarter rat.. I dont just do i have already lived it..

Major remodels like that are always exciting.
My GF had a 4 bedroom single story house remodeled to a 6 bedroom 2 story house. Fast forward many years, kids are out of the house, husband kicked out a long time ago and now the whole second floor is pretty much empty.
Now, now, we don't need someone breathing a bunch of reality into this cool, yet totally unnecessary project.

In regards to the truss segment . How does just replacing the main beam with a larger beam prevent the outward lateral movement of the exterior walls?
The beam helps because it is supported at both ends
It doesn't it needs collet ties
Look a the new studs @ 7:25 that transfer the load down to the foundation on both ends of the new beam. They left that part out of the vid
Because now the load of the roof is landing on the ridge beam and being transferred down the walls at the end of the house. Previously, the load was being transferred down the rafters to the sides of the house. Now the load is transferred up to the ridge beam. The rafters can't spread because they're fixed to the ridge beam. So collar ties no longer necessary.
@21:08 How is the condensate removed? The dirty little secret of split cooling systems is that there is a drip-drip-drip, at the cooling coil... especially in humid, Eastcoast climates.
Those units usually have built-in condensate pumps

I fail to see how installing that lam-beam will make up for removing the collar ties. They still need something to keep the roof from spreading like a cheap hooker.
Structural ridge beam replaced existing ridge. You could also put the structural underneath the existing but they chose to replace for more space. It has the stud on either end to carry the weight and it won’t flex in the middle of ridge
@@tinshlong ... yes, I follow that this may take the "swayback" out of a sagging roof, but does nothing to keep the walls from spreading over time.
@@rupe53 Yea it will probably settle a bit and they will get cracking in the drywall in the corners and slightly wavy walls. I don't think it will spread that much and would require a straight edge to see but to your point it will happen. I've done work on removing basement beam posts by strengthening the beams and the engineers always call out that it will settle a bit (longer spans ALWAYS flex a bit by design). I assume this is very similar and the engineer called it out but they don't mention it on the show.

They always have a solution, but since they called out the collar ties in the first place I figured they would go into the details a bit more, which is usually to raise them up and double them as well. Could also box them in a decorative fashion when done. I mean, who needs 13 ft ceilings in a residential situation? The look is nice, but let's be practical in the long run.

i love watching the construction workers pretending to move work on screen lmao. for some reason one guy is moving wood 5 feet away from where it originally was and another guy is folding up and carrying a ladder without bring down any tools with him. love TOH though

That was (3) 18" deep LVLs , what is max. span for that beam, in place ur working at? Nice Job!
Its depends on the LVL grade/type & the loading/location of the job, you can get load/span tables from mfg's websites like Weyerhaeuser. You will need those loads to spec the correct size/type/spec of the LVL and you chose the LVL (or combo of multiple LVLs) that will then accommodate the span at those loads.
Or just use steel... with wood attached as nailing surfaces, the same calculations are needed with Steel and the cost is not that different. Also it takes us 3 days to get what ever sized steel we need ordered cut and delivered, LVLs (especially now a days) can take weeks months. (you mileage may very here)

But where do you put your line sets. If it is not next to the house then you either under groun or above. I install next to the houses line set right in and these systems are very quite any way. Just wondering
that hole in the foundation feels like a very unsafe approach. hands and arms under heavy rocks that are intended to be removed.
It's under compression, can't really move. I understand what you're saying though. Before I started building there were lots of things like that that I couldn't wrap my head around.
But you figure, say that you have a house with a 50 x 60 footprint. Take out a few feet and you still have the majority with solid bearing. Like if you step on a crack, your foot spans over it on both sides with solid bearing. Yes there is a weak point were the crack is but you don't fall in the crack. Know what I'm saying?

@@davegordon6943 Especially speaking that the home is on a rock slab I lived in a home built in 1940 and that was built on a rock slab. I can say maintenance is a whole lot less if it was still legal today. But unfortunately it's not. I was thinking when putting rock slabs in I was thinking to gravel about atleast 5 ft in the ground and than put the rock slabs in since we have advance technology. It would level the ground and over the years it would help take water in the ground. Oh and one more thing. Tarph the ground very first than gravel than rock slabs. What do you think?
While these guys are professionals, one should think twice about doing this type of stone wall demolition without using gloves and what appears to be Kevin wearing running shoes instead of work boots or steel toed footwear. Glad to see the safety glasses though.

I started watching this show in 1978 but due to a lot of factors I haven't really seen it in the last 2 years I was really surprised of how much extra weight Kevin is carrying. He's got that middle-aged spread like what happened to me. LOL

These new heating/ac units are going to be a maintenance nightmare. Any savings will be eaten up when sensors, valves, switches and motors start acting up. Good luck finding trained techs.

I must have missed something, I don't understand what is keeping the walls on the top floor from being pushed outwards after removing the ceiling truss and ceiling joists. Can someone please explain.. This is a project I am interested in doing at my home. Thank you.
Good question... The new beam replaced the truss, but nothing replaced the collar ties.
I believe the (dominant) side load originally from the roof is removed because the ridge beam makes the rafter joint fixed instead of pinned, ie roof load will go through the ridge beam down through its vertical posts instead of being carried to the side walls. The side walls thus lose the lateral loading imposed by the original roof style. Google ridge board vs ridge beam for more info.
@@208476 That makes sense. A lot of the roof load is now going to the walls at the gable ends, instead of to the side walls. Therefore, less spreading.
@@208476 I've been through this thought process before. There was a really old structure that I saw on the British Show Time Team and there were no rafter ties in the building. My initial thought was that they solved the problem by having really strong walls but then I realized that the ridge beam was supported on the ends and not by the rafters so no force from the rafters to push the walls out.
Pretty sure I heard the one guy mention "posts to support the beam".

15:00 Sky lights are great during the daytime. But at night you still need the same exact lighting you'd need without skylights so why waste the money? How much will the cost for lighting the closet be for the required few minutes a week? 15cents maybe?

I think they made it wider for beams
It's now being supported on the ends by a studded structure to transfer the load down to the foundation. They left that part out of the video. Look at the new 2x4 framing at @7:25

“House was built 1890s or so”
Nothing really left from the 1890s except the dust. It’s now, this very expensive gutted remodel house. Knock down would be much cheaper to build, much faster to build, better materials. I love working regular wood, but for construction engineered and laminated is simply better, stronger, more uniform, doesn’t warp. That’s it.
The New England towns where these guys work rarely permit tear-downs, despite the fact that few late-19th century houses are architecturally significant.

Why not just have 5 feet of hemp crete? It will get you R-55 in the walls....then sprinkle some geothermal into the mix.... no need for machinery right?

Only about 1.3% of US housing units have solar panels... that includes ALL solar installs not just roof top..
Im pretty sure the demand for having natural light trumps that of being able to cover every square inch of roof with panels.

How small of air handlers does he use? A single air handler should handle 3000 sqft! Just condition the whole area as the same! no need to make each room different. So much unnecessary costs!
Wait till I needs repaired or replaced. Would be a major job. We in the industry hates these type of owners. They are using a pos LG to boot.

After watching this show for years and being inspired I stopped watching after I checked out pricing on appliances & decor for these "remodels" and it was insane amount of money no average person could ever afford. Alas, it isn't so much anymore...but I could soak up Tom's words of wisdom and experience ALL DAY!
The average American homeowner doesn't even want to change their own furnace filters let alone tackle a big remodel. So you're right.
However, for the advanced DIY, a lot of this stuff is still relevant I think. Someone willing to do a lot of learning and hard work can do the same job for half the price or twice the job for the same price, as construction projects often come out to about 50/50 material vs. labor.
@@bradley3549 I actually change my furnace air filter every 4 months lol. I wanted to replace the furnace and central air unit but I plan to sell the house next year and it wouldn't have been in the best interest of my investment to spend that kind of money. My next house will be my forever home and I plan to spend a lot they're but over time.

@flat-earther yes I did last year. I bought it in 2019 for $285,000 sold it for $402,000 when the housing buying frenzy was happening. Now a guy is paying more than what the house is which is a 2 bed 2 bath and only 900 sqft
