I don't get what he was saying at the end. when he says the fish are at 250 feet doesn't mean you have to use a sinker rig? You can still use a flyline? Does that mean that there are still some fish near the surface and that you don't have to drop your bait down to 250?
I think what he is saying is that they may be in different spots in the water column all the way down to 250 ft so just because they are deeper doesn't mean you should only use a dropper rig. I have been on plenty of bites where they were biting dropper rigs and flylined bait at the same stop. I guess it's all about being versatile and changing things up if it isn't working. Of course asking the crew what to do when you are on the spot always helps too. Best of luck out there!
also the fish will hang deep at 240' but they come up and eat the fly lined baits too. The fish can accelerate quickly and cover 250' feet of distance so fast. They come up and then go back down. They have great vision especially with the deck lights on or in the daylight. The tuna don't sit deep waiting for bait to come down, and the bait knows the tuna are below so they stay up in the water column. When the tuna are in feeding mode they blast up in a couple seconds and eat the fly lined baits. Some fish deeper will eat the sinker rig baits. all aspects will work. Don't think that you have to drop your bait to 250 feet to get a bite, they will come up for the flylined baits too if they are in feeding mode.
He was recommending size 4 circle hooks on the 30lb, size 2 circle on the 40lb and 2/0 or 3/0 on the sinker rig set up. For the knife jigs he was recommending 7/0-9/0 reinforced (5x strength) stinger hooks. Some people had standard strength stingers and they got straightened out.
@@californiasaltwaterfishing9212 I change out my hooks on all of my knife jigs and the split rings. I would hate for mine to fail. I will say always listen to the Capt and Crew they know what works.
Best cap in da biz, just an animal!!!!!

What hooks was the captain recommending?
