    I didn't get much in the way of leftover pumpkins this year. But the few I got I have to my chooks. They love them and I like to think that it does them some good to have something to peck on. But my pet PBP's munch them up when given the opportunity.

      @@RedToolHouse One thing I've seen in many many pig videos now is that pigs LOVE to eat. Pigs seem to enjoy food 3 times more than most of us do when we're at our hungriest AND eating our favorite food in the world. I don't know if it's more that pigs' stomachs are bigger in proportion to their bodies than our stomachs are to our bodies. Or, if their stomachs empty faster after eating than ours do, therefore making them hungry again sooner. Or, if pigs' taste buds are even more sensitive than ours are, so good food is even more enjoyable to them than it is to us. Or, maybe it's a combination of all 3.
      Pigs having more sensitive taste buds than us, I believe is most likely out of the 3 to be true, since it's been scientifically proven that pigs have a much stronger sense of smell than we do, then they'd likely have a stronger sense of taste than us too. All I know that is certainly true is that pigs enjoy food tremendously

    That is a lot of houses to go by and pick up some pumpkins. Might I suggest that you stop by the pumpkin seller lot the day after Halloween and offer to take his pumpkins off his hands and have some help with you to help pick up the pumpkins. This way he gets a clean lot and he can get ready for the Christmas trees. You get good pumpkins that you can feed your pigs over a few weeks for free. :-)

    I wonder what the grocery stores do with all of the unsold ones After Halloween. When I was a boy my uncle used to take us dumpster diving at the local commercial bakery to get bread to feed the pigs. We used to load up on stall chocolate donuts.

    Troy, I'm lucky enough to live near a farmers market here in asheville so i get vegies for my chickens including punkins,watermellons,squash and more. They eat it gone, so i know they are enjoying the benifits. Back when i had hogs we got resturant food scraps then cooked it into a mash, or as we lovingly called it sloping the ham's.

    Troy, what are your thoughts on having a fodder garden? Growing food specifically meant to be fed to ag animals? I found something on Baker Creek seeds website where they have seeds to grow these ginormous beets, meant for animal feed. Pigs, chickens, goats, cows and horses primarily. The beets can get up to 20 lbs each. Are pigs so finicky that they need mill feed to thrive?

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think a fodder garden would be very helpful. Pigs aren't finicky at all but they aren't ruminants so they do need a good protein source. You could raise your our soy or other protein but it would require a bunch and may not be scaleable.

    Can we feed pumpkin to pregnant pig

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of any particular foods that a pregnant pig can't eat, but she does need to consume extra nutrients and extra fiber during pregnancy. So, I'm quite sure that a sow's unborn piggies will handle pumpkin just fine as long as the sow does. Some pigs have been known to have food allergies to certain things, but that has nothing to do with pregnancy
