I hated those pigs with a passion because of that smell. They even were in the back pasture away from the house and still smelled horrible. Worse smell ever is that of a pig.

The screaming is one of the defense mechanisms pigs have. It would be screaming regardless and this is actually safer than sedation. They use a similar tool for horses called a twitch so they can work on floating teeth
A twitch is not used while floating teeth on horses. The horse is sedated and then a halter with a wedge is placed in the mouth of the horse to hold the mouth open. Twitches have been proven to only cause pain and trauma in horses and do not work effectively

An experienced vet can get this done in under ten minutes. Which is how long a twitch will relax a horse, and if anything is less traumatic than the actual procedure. It releases endorphins after a couple minutes and relaxes the horse, similar to scruffing a cat. You're right about a wedge halter. They're often used, not only for an in depth oral exam, but also in conjunction with a twitch. It is not painful if done correctly. I've done it countless times. But it's specific only to a nose twitch. Not an ear twitch, which in fact is exceptionally painful and only used in extreme emergencies. I am not a vet, but I worked at a boarding facility with 40+ horses for years. The only time sedation was used was for lengthy oral exams, gelding, injuries and when a horse was sick/injured beyond recovery, serious impact on quality of life or suffering from old age before administrating the final injection or anything that required them to be still and calm for more than 10-15 minutes. There were rescue horses that came from abusive homes, they did need to be sedated for a simple thing like floating teeth,health checks, the farrier, transport etc. Even then, we'd train with a twitch during grooming, baths and (if applicable) tacking before they were adopted out. Very few owners want a horse that is dangerous to themselves or others and needs sedation for absolutely everything. Just because a method is old, doesn't mean it's wrong.
Twitching a horses is never a good idea it. An make the mouth sour. Scared to or hard to put bits in there mouth. Or cause head shyness. Plus it only last for so long. I wouldn’t allow any form of torture used on my expensive horses used. I mean. Why would you pay 10,000 for a horse just to twitch him and ruin him by causing a problem then paying a trainer money to break a problem you caused. Just a proper horse dentist out there and he don’t knows what to do. Twitching is not one.
