Agreed about the salad. Another thing is this mushy peas business. It seems like sometime over the last couple of decades somebody decided that mushy peas were traditional with fish and chips and the chain restaurants jumped on the bandwagon. I am very slightly younger than you (the original commenter) and I don't think growing up in south London or as a young adult I had ever even heard of mushy peas.

On dish 1 for me its a 'Salad WTF' wheres the rest of the chips that should be in that space. Dish 2 'Salad WTF?. Not enough chips. 3) WTF. 4) What I'd expect in most places in NW England. 5) Nope. A more accurate statement would be we have a vague hint of mushy peas as well plus a hint of chips.

Plate one was so far from traditional fish & chips. They were what we call chunky chips, not fish shop chips. Fish has to be in batter, the batter seals the fish in so it steams inside perfectly. And you don't get a big plate of salad, you get tartar sauce and maybe a pickled gherkin or egg. Ooopp North you'd get mushy peas as well.

The hipsters are back. Oh no! Most fish & chip places are takeaways commonly called Chippies or Chip Shops. They usually have long lines outside on Friday nights starting at around 6pm. The majority of people choose Cod when ordering fish & chips even though they offer a full range of fish. Often, the server will ask “Open or Closed?” meaning are you eating it as you walk (so the wrapper is open) or do you want to keep your food wrapped up until you get home (so the wrapper is closed). The server will sprinkle salt, pepper & vinegar on your food & you have to tell them when to stop or if you don’t want any condiments at all. A segment of lemon is usually included. Added extras are gherkin, tartar sauce & tomato ketchup (often in sachets but some serve fresh little pots), mushy peas, pickled eggs & sodas. No salad at all. Portions (even the small ones) are usually larger than shown in this video & cost less but in less tourist traps. In my humble opinion, the best fish & chips are served up North or in Cornwall at the seaside with freshly caught fish.

Connor, the 'mushy' peas are a north of England concoction, not to everyone's taste, and a releatively new addition to the dish which was, traditionally, eaten directly out of newspaper with salt and vinegar sprinkled liberally over it and accompanied with a large pickled onion.

Proper fish and chips = No cardboard or polystyrene trays, no mushy pease (unless you live north of Watford!), no sauces-(just seasoned with salt and vinegar only), no lemon slices and no bloody salad!
Fish has to be fresh and properly battered, fully covering the fish and crispy. Chips need to be properly cooked, crisp on the outside white and fluffy on the inside. All deep fried in good quality oil or dripping. None of it should be swimming in oil or grease, it should be reasonably dry. Wrapped in white paper only.
We have a fish and chip supper most Fridays.

The 2nd one, the Golden Chippy, is definitely my idea of a classic proper chippy fish and chips, the others are either trying to add or change things unnecessarily, like adding salad for some reason, or making the chips "block" shaped. But also you really don't need to spend so much money for a decent fish and chips and quite frankly, i don't think that London set's the standard in this video for it. Up north seems to be better value because you simply get what you ask for. A good chippy gives you good food, and doesn't charge for the so called "experience"!

London, so the fish will usually be Cod (excepting the place that does "Bass 'n Chips" which tbh seems a bit extravagant; I can think of better things to do wiih Bass.... & less said about the pretentious N. London pseuds with Sea Bream, the better). As a picky Northerner, though, I'd want the deep fried, battered Haddock with my chips and mushy peas. Though NOT at 18 quid a pop! That being said, some of the other meals here looked pretty good. The S London Bubble for eg, whose mouth-watering Cod 'n Chips was accompanied by equally enticing mushy peas that (inevitably. ALL Americans do on 1st sight) Connor mistook for guacamole.

IMO you're wrong about the chips not being the star. From what I can see that's the different between Irish chippers and American chains. The chips are treated as an afterthought, in Ireland at least they are the main event.

Scotland Invented Chips but they were twice cooked thick, chunky Chips. Because Scotland was friendly with France while the English were fighting them we introduced them to Chips which they loved and took back to France. Later on during the French Revolution the People were starving. As an answer they cut the Thick Chunky Chips into much thinner Chips so it looked like a lot more to eat. Many years later, to defraud the American People, instead of giving the People proper Chips they would give them the French version and call them French Fries. That way the People would be paying more money for less and Businesses would make a lot of money.

I did have some very good chips in Edinburgh and they came with something called a "minute steak". I thought it would be a tiny steak, but it turned out to be a thin piece of steak cooked for one minute. You funny Scots people love to embarrass us Sassenachs! 😃

Actually a lot more at Poppies - a total tourist rip-off place ! Average spend is about £22 (they charge £2.95 just for mushy peas + soft drinks cost £2.60 average) PLUS add on 12.5% to 'eat in' to the bill total... My sister & brother-in-law went into Spitalfields branch and ended up getting a bill for over £48.00 - SMH

The chips are more important than the fish to me. A chippy can have great fish but if their chips are rubbish then I'm not going back there. I want a decent portion of chips that are chunky and don't have any grease. The quantity of fish is not as important to me as long as it is reasonable. Also never choose cod, it is the most overrated fish ever, it has no flavour and a really awful texture. If you're serving veg with fish and chips then you're not a chippy. The judges here were wrong as well, they kept complimenting the fish on being "buttery"; if the fish is "buttery" then something is wrong and I would be asking for my money back. No one should need tartar sauce at a chippy, that's just weird. Salt and vinegar only.

    1) Half a plate of salad, no thanks. Sea bass is great but not battered for fish and chips. Should be Cod or Haddock. 2) This looks excellent except for salad, mushy peas are only green thing required thanks. 3) Pretentious crap. 4) Anaemic chips 5) Pretentious Crap. Number 2 gets my vote.

Probably the worse comparison of ‘Fish n Chips’ you could ever have. Number 2 was the nearest to traditional and 90% of chip shops offer similar with a large variation in taste & quality even down to the frying range they’re cooked in. Give me 6 local plates of chips and I could probably guess which was which blindfolded.

#1 - Trying too hard. Why cold salad with hot food? No! (I love salads)
#2 - Same salad... Why? Mushy peas are enough. The fish looks really good, nice batter.
#3 - Trendy, not really Fish n Chips. Freshwater fish. Garlic butter doesn't sit well with Sarsons vinegar.
#4 - Bog standard. Find somewhere else.
#5 - Looks great, Nice batter but overpriced.

When she said in relation to the first serving that it came in a “Wonderful circular display”, that is what is sometimes known as a plate. These two are very irritating. Second serving - not guacamole but mushy peas, the only permitted accompaniment to fish and chips.Third serving ‘new school vibe’….gave up at that point.

Except for Billingsgate & The Golden Chippy. Poppies is SO expensive, I feel sorry for the tourists because that's who are the main customers (all three branches located in three 'tourist traps'! Plus they ADD on a service charge for eating in. I saw they had mushy peas on the table too... which is an extra £2.95 and they had a 'regular' fish supper (£13.95), for a large, they charge £17.95 + £2.65 for soft drinks + 12.5% to the bill - The actual price without anything else will cost you £22.00 average.
