I'm sick of people saying technical music has no soul because they don't do long bends and make emotional faces when they do vibrato. Just because you don't get a good feeling from it doesn't mean they didn't put feeling into it, or that the fans don't get one. These guys pour their hearts into their playing. Give them the respect they deserve.
Exactly. I think it's because blues fanboys are musically close minded. The harmonic minor, phrygian and phrygian modes don't appeal to them and that's okay. But saying technical playing has no soul because they don't like it is ridiculous. They won't say that to Franz Liszt, Mozart and Bach, partially because they're dead and partially because they are universally studied and held in high regard. Metal, especially technical death metal is a relatively small niche so an outsider may not appreciate the nuance and passion and soul put into it. Imagine them saying a sitar player, shamisen player or Andalusian guitarist has "no soul" while they have zero love of different music genres.

Dude I just busted out laughing cause that’s so true. I can get through several their songs at about 80-90% speed. Takes a while for me but man it’s worth it. The solos though? I’ve learned one and am lucky if I can get it well at 50-60% and they’re very hard to learn. I’ve learned so much though and their music is just so fun to play.
This playthrough inspired me as a 16 year old to learn this song, and now 9 years later (2 years after last playing regularly) has reinpassioned me to play this again.
+Josh Schulz Gorguts is actually from Canada (although most of the members of the band's current line-up are American). I'd say that not only is Gorguts one of the best tech death bands but also one of the best metal bands in general (right next to Death, Cynic and Agalloch).
The way Christian plays is so effortless. I am vastly intrigued by the way his left hand rests and moves and facilitates the very accuracy of his playing. His style on that hand is very different than what I've seen in this genre before...he uses his pinky a LOT more than I would expect a techdeath player to. It's almost as if he is doing so with purpose. Amazing.
Christian suffers focal dystonia in his left forearm, which leaves him unable to use his middle finger normally, that's why he uses his pinky a lot more and minimizes hand movement when playing
+Lucas Jenkins Yeah he's a beast. I remember him saying on some interview that he's actually regained most of his control in his left hand but he still plays like that because he realised it sounds better.
yes way. he's a very stubborn man... and thanks to that, he's inspired many other players with hand disorders such as focal dystonia and carpal tunnel;, myself included, to keep trying and never give up playing. He had to rewrite his solos on this album to accommodate the disorder as it flared up in earnest after writing the album but before hte recording process. I don't know what the original riffs/solos sounded like or looked like, but knowing him, they sounded exactly the same, just with less tapping. Of note, I was on the verge of selling all my equipment and giving up music, until I saw this video... I fig'd that if he could overcome losing use of a finger, and still play the most complex leads, I could get over my pins and needles in my left hand, make some adjustments and keep playing... of all the music I wrote up til my wrist failed, only two give me problems still to play, and one I can play once a day, the other wasn't a complete song anyways, and I wasn't really sold on it since it was a bit out of my usual style. But yea, these days Chris has better control of the focal dystonia and even manages to use the finger on some things, but it still curls up when he does some chords requiring fretting multiple strings with the index finger...
The solo is something only Christian can pull off, at 2:10, he is using 4 finger pulloffs, i couldnt figure out the notes, but by seeing this playthrough i now understand, he has a super pinky.
@@j.pabloquinche3283 nah man, the OP is referring to the diminished line which Christian exclusively uses his left index and pinky as well as his right middle and pinky to tap the line. Slow the clip and you’ll see what I mean.
@@thecrypticstench i wonder if in modern times Christian Muenzner changed up his fingerings for some of this stuff. He had to quit Obscura for a bit to lower his workload because he started developing focal dystonia in his left hand which affected his ability to use his pinky
