Haha, thank you! Believe it or not, but I thought stop motion animation would actually be the easiest/most efficient way of showing what I meant here. 😊
I think the preliminary model used one of the light grey pin axles that has less friction than the regular blue ones. If I would speculate the reason they probably changed it to a frictionless pin is because the light grey pin axle was being discontinued for its tan counter part in 2003
It might also be that the bridge was placed one technic hole over to cause it to tip on its own once the axle was removed. It's hard to tell from the image, but it doesn't look like the two 4-stud technic bricks are lined up there the same way as they are in the final set.

About Sam sitting in the rear seat of the plane: Obviously it's wrong for the set because the controls are in the front seat, but in a way it would be more correct. Two-seater biplanes like this are usually flown solo from the rear seat. That way, the plane can be designed and balanced around always having someone in that seat. Meanwhile the front seat, which is usually very near or right in between the wings, is very close to the center of gravity, meaning whether it is occupied or not has minimal impact on the aircraft's flight characteristics. The view from the rear seat can also be a little better, because you're not sitting right in the middle of the wings, with all their struts, bracing, and so on. Anyway, this was a fun chapter of the journey, I'm looking forward to the final one!
You're totally right! These old machines are incredible to see in person - they can go from a full stop to airborne in like 10 seconds. They're so light!
The mountain sleigh red railing pieces correction is greatly appreciated. Is these minute moments of attention to detail which elevates Slugger's work to rarefied air.
7:12 My estimate is that the Technic pin was originally a pin/axle piece (part 3749) which would have had less friction, causing the rope bridge to swing more freely. Likely it was replaced with the pin as it probably was too finicky in playtesting.
Sangye getting is one and only shot at being the focual point of a Slugger thumbnail, he shall now always be immortalised when scrolling through the channel
Thanks for your videos. They inspired me to collect figures of Adventurers (as they are quite cheap) and to do MOCs with them (as original sets are quite expensive).
So far we've seen a Fabuland shovel in Rock Raiders and now an axe in Adventures! Very interesting, I wonder what other retro themes we'll the these curious tools in.
Excited for the China segment of the adventure, I’ve been avidly collecting the Chinese New Year and certain Monkie Kid sets ever since I found out they existed 3-4 years ago. I certainly suppose I am somewhat of a sinophile so those super special sets are sure to sink my $ sometime. That Dragon Fortress in particular, that thing costs a pretty penny.
And rightfully so - The Dragon Fortress very well might be the best set ever to use a raised baseplate! 😮 I hate overselling how great it is (because it's so expensive now), but it really is the ultimate Orient Expedition set.
It looks like that promotional image had the rope bridge set with the hinge point offset to the left-most hole (as facing across the bridge toward the door) on the technic bricks supporting the bridge ends and the pinpoint at the center with the pull pin. This would cause the trap to activate with the bridge twisting just from its own weight without aid needed since the center of gravity would be offset from the fixed hinge point. The technic bricks seem to be offset from each other by one stud. Great video as always for one of my top favorite themes and sub-themes!
I just posted a video explaining a possible solution on the second channel, if you want to check it out! I think you're on the right track. 😊 th-cam.com/video/fVQVLhfrhnA/w-d-xo.html
I didn't have time to tell you for the Temple set, but Sanjay's pants are supposed to be light grey instead of dark gray. Btw, thank you for the amazing videos so far :D
The bridge is likely just connected by a frictionless half-pin half axle piece. I can see why they’d switch to a frictionless pin for the sake of stability :)
Good job as always slugger. Good job as always. Hopefully by the time of the next one America will be in greener pastures, and not being oppressed by the war on Medicare. Three toots on the Train if you get the reference in the above. Anyways, jokes aside, may the force be with you, and I now gotta wait for the mail to arrive sometime next week so that I can build my Lego MOT Passenger Wagons.
7:33 As I stated in the dedicated "temple" video, the technic peg works best if it is inserted into the left or right holes of the bridge. The axle that holds it in place goes through the center hole of the bridge. This way, when the axle is pulled out, the off-center gravitational point of the bridge causes it to topple instantly.
I really wish I had demonstrated this in that video, because a lot of folks seem to think this to be the case; however, I found that the low centre of gravity prevented the bridge from swinging on its own when the pin was pulled, even with that off centre orientation. 🙃
For the plane seating position: if a plane has a cockpit with two seats in a row. The most senior pilot or the only pilot is most often in the back seat I believe.
Today I recived a bad new, I was just... Shock all this day, but today Sluger you make me happy once again Gracias por todos tus buenos videos y tu tiempo para escribir a tus subscriptores :)
No skulls in the China theme is interesting. It could just be because of aesthetics, but Chinese culture has a lot of superstitions around human skeletons. Infamously, World of Warcraft in China replaced its skeleton monsters with ghouls in an effort to avoid government scrutiny, though the depiction of skeletons is not illegal as is often reported.
Age of Empires' definitive editions also had a change like this; in the original game and AOE2, dead infantry slowly rot away and leave behind skeletons for a good chunk of time, but in DE and 2DE, they instead sink into the ground and fade to a bloodstain then disappear after about 20 seconds. The skeleton decorations in a few scenarios remain, though.
Didn't realize the trap axes originally came from a non-minifigure-scale theme until now. I also forgot to mention how the temple is also the second and final set to have that style of door hinges in the old dark gray, first appearing in the original version of Hagrid's Hut (4707) from 2001. Also, as a correction from the previous comment, the Temple of Mount Everest was the first set to have a chrome gold sword, but this part actually first appeared in chrome silver in the "Royal Knights" theme from 1995. And Chrome parts as a whole actually lasted until 2011, with the final appearances being in a chess set from 2012.
@@RRSlugger Indeed. Though a large part of that can be attributed to how the original shades of light and dark gray were in the process of being phased out by Lego as a whole during the period between mid-2003 and 2004, with the last new parts in the darker shade being produced in '05. Despite some parts in that color surviving in education kits as late as 2017. This is also true for the old shade of brown (often called "Mata brown"), with the temple also being the penultimate set to have the 2x2 round brick w/axle hole in that color. Having first appeared in the Pirates "Rock Island Refuge" set (6273) from 1991. It's final appearance was in the Dagobah version of the X-Wing (4502) in 2003, though it was also released in a black "Original Trilogy edition" box at the start of 2004 before the piece was phased out entirely in that color. But aside from those, there are also plenty of themes from the '90s I've rarely seen covered within this format, such as the "Fright Knights" and the previously-mentioned "Royal Knights". If you are familiar with those?
Another great video from slugger. Interesting that the Orient Expedition continues beyond Mt. Everest, excited to see where this series goes! The quality is insane and you deserve every sub you get. It was really fun to come in with no knowledge of Adventurers and learn so much through your videos.
I would leave a comment sharing my general thoughts on the Everest sets, but I've kind of already done that on previous videos. So I'm just going to say; I'm really enjoying this retrospective, and I look forward to the next instalment!
I bet the lack of skulls from here on out has to do with the Chinese taboo about depicting skulls. I doubt Lego would wanna upset potential customers looking to buy a Lego set depicting their own country with something like that, even in the 2000s when this kind of thing was less well known in the west.
Interesting thing about the skulls not returning in China sets. To my understanding, Chinese culture dislikes displays of uncovered bones, to the point of having some games imported turn skeletal undead monsters into fleshy zombie undead monsters!
I don't own the temple, but I knew about the bridge trap from pictures. I always assumed the frictionless pins were offset to one side, so when the technic pin is removed, the bridge would roll over if that makes sense. Still doesn't explain the technic pin in the picture
Love the video, though one minor correction. It's not the final outing for the Fabuland Axe, they used one in the very first Lego Harry Potter Hagrid's hut
Ah, but Hagrid's Hut predates this set as it released in 2001! The 2nd edition (2004) version doesn't have the Fabuland axe, but instead a regular minifigure scaled one. 🙂
@@BarcroftLaboratories You’re right, it does! Adventurers launched in 1998, but Orient Expedition came out 5 years later, which might be where the confusion comes from. 🙂
Great work as always! Do You know what's the state of the infamous BrickLink update You've made a video about some time ago? Nobody is talking about this topic novadays.
Essentially, nearly everything that was proposed was pushed through, with minor amendments here or there. It seems the admin of Bricklink weren't really asking the community, they were *telling* 😅
Doubtful - while Johnny Thunder does appear, I feel it’s little more than a cameo on par with his appearances in something like LEGO Studios. Still cool! But not Adventurers.
I got the new set with Johnny Thunder, the Jungle Explorer ATV! Johnny seems to have been updated a bit with a new faxe print and torso print, with Indiana Jones' hat. The face is a solid update to his original, the notable differences being that he now has stubble and his eyebrows are now a little quizzical. His torso is double sided, and a little more modest, it is not fully buttoned up rather than showing his chest. I would have preferred a new version of his original hat, the fold in the brim was iconic for him, but I suppose stealing Indies hat isn't too far from the truth. The set also comes with a map piece similar to the ones in these sets, and a very ornate compass. Overall not a bad translation of the character to modern lego, I just wish the sets were more mythological than they are.
I believe he appears in two of this theme's sets, the cheapest that I got and the one with the tiger. I've been wanting to get him for a while, so it was nice to be able to get the latest version of him. I'll still probably get the original anyway, though.
I hate to be the TH-cam commenter to ask “will you cover ___?” but I’m genuinely curious to know if you are interested in covering the new city sets including Johnny Thunder, although they aren’t “adventures” it’s still technically a footnote in the lore I suppose. But as usual I really enjoyed this video, it’s nice to get some supplemental info on the process behind the videos and new info.
I don’t know. Johnny is making a little more than a cameo in those sets, and they otherwise have very little to do with Adventurers. I might pick one up eventually… 🤔
What?? A Lego set that was retired in a single year? I thought 3 years was the standard run, in fact I was directly told this by a marketing employee when Alien Conquest was new. When did that change?
7:23 about that bridge pin pic problem; Is it possible that you are supposed to attache the light grey 1x4 technic bricks that are holding the bridge off-center with the rock foundation and temple. That way the technic trap pin would fit through the middle hole AND once removed, the trap effect of the bridge is more receptive ... i hope this is somewhat understandable ^^ like ... if you pause at 7:23 the bridge should be hanging on stud further to the right ...
I just posted a video explaining a possible solution on the second channel, if you want to check it out! I think you're on the right track. 😊 th-cam.com/video/fVQVLhfrhnA/w-d-xo.html
Not necessarily the wrong seat. Many small planes have controls in both seats. I was a passenger in a small biplane and sat in the front while the pilot sat behind me and had the controls. My seat also had controls, but would have needed to be enabled. Buuut Lego probably only did this so you could see his face, just like they put tools in Minifigures' left hands as to not obscure their face and body in glamour shots for boxes
True on both counts! The LEGO set only has controls at the front of the plane though, so maybe Ngan Pa was flying? (though, who taught him how to fly a plane??) 😅
Is that one piece on the preliminary artwork a Technic pin/axle combo instead of the double-sided frictionless pin that they used in the official set? That is odd, especially given that the bridge function doesn’t really work that well. I’ve tried to modify it so that the pin is off-center (requires modifying the temple landing itself as well) and it works a little better when you remove the axle, but it’s pretty unrefined.
It's crazy that not a one of these sets took a stab at depicting the iconic Tibetan prayer flags. Perhaps their omission was out of respect but the sets already depict Buddhist holy sites, I don't think their inclusion would have made the theme any more or less insensitive to Tibetan culture. I just see it as a huge missed opportunity for some beautiful 2x2 printed plates hanging off these sets.
yeah, I brought this up the first time the Golden Dingus was discussed, since as my grandparents used it it would be something like "thingy." The Maltese Falcon/20s slang explanation seems to make more sense than misspelling Dutch, though. The real treasure was me learning how to spell my grandparents' poor vocabulary along the way.
Gotta say that the box design of this period was particularly bland and ugly with the blue border, compared with the late 90s and early 00s. I don't know what they were thinking
@@RRSlugger I see the logic, particularly when they were facing increased competition from megabloks etc, to have a uniform brand design on the boxes for recognition, but the execution left something to be desired.
Mystery solved! (maybe)

@@colinroberts2060 Castle stuff is definitely a blind spot for me. I don’t have a lot of it and it’s a little too expensive to get into it now. 😕
@@RRSlugger But even if it wasn't from those particular factions, were there any that you did have from Castle?
@@colinroberts2060 I had the Black Falcon Fortress and some Knights Kingdom 1 stuff, if I recall. 🙂
Another great video from slugger. Interesting that the Orient Expedition continues beyond Mt. Everest, excited to see where this series goes! The quality is insane and you deserve every sub you get. It was really fun to come in with no knowledge of Adventurers and learn so much through your videos.
Thank you! I’m glad to hear we’re learning more about this series together! 😊
I would leave a comment sharing my general thoughts on the Everest sets, but I've kind of already done that on previous videos.
So I'm just going to say; I'm really enjoying this retrospective, and I look forward to the next instalment!
Thank you! ❤️
I bet the lack of skulls from here on out has to do with the Chinese taboo about depicting skulls. I doubt Lego would wanna upset potential customers looking to buy a Lego set depicting their own country with something like that, even in the 2000s when this kind of thing was less well known in the west.
This is a great point! I’ll definitely bring it up when we get to China. 👍
I've never been so early. Instant click
I think Everest is my favourite expedition from adventures Orient but the Chinese expedition has the dragon fortress which I’m looking forward to
Interesting thing about the skulls not returning in China sets. To my understanding, Chinese culture dislikes displays of uncovered bones, to the point of having some games imported turn skeletal undead monsters into fleshy zombie undead monsters!
This is a great point that I will definitely make mention of. It seems quite plausible!
"To call it a slog would be an understatement..."
....So, I will call it a slug.
That would be more correct! 😉
I don't own the temple, but I knew about the bridge trap from pictures. I always assumed the frictionless pins were offset to one side, so when the technic pin is removed, the bridge would roll over if that makes sense. Still doesn't explain the technic pin in the picture
Wow amazing 🎉
You should do a system Ninjas theme that would be awesome
I should get more sets in that series!
@@RRSlugger ah, I have that wrong then I thought Adventurers pedated HP
@@BarcroftLaboratories You’re right, it does! Adventurers launched in 1998, but Orient Expedition came out 5 years later, which might be where the confusion comes from. 🙂
theres probably a way you could tweak the alt build to no longer stress parts
Great work as always!
Do You know what's the state of the infamous BrickLink update You've made a video about some time ago? Nobody is talking about this topic novadays.
Essentially, nearly everything that was proposed was pushed through, with minor amendments here or there. It seems the admin of Bricklink weren't really asking the community, they were *telling* 😅
i am sad to see everest end but also happy for china to begin
Harry Cane pulled through *question mark exclamation mark question mark*
Are you going to include a mini series of the 2024 sets when this wraps up?
Yeah! It looks like a cool figure. I’ll have to pick one up eventually. 👍
I believe he appears in two of this theme's sets, the cheapest that I got and the one with the tiger. I've been wanting to get him for a while, so it was nice to be able to get the latest version of him. I'll still probably get the original anyway, though.
GGGREAT
I hate to be the TH-cam commenter to ask “will you cover ___?” but I’m genuinely curious to know if you are interested in covering the new city sets including Johnny Thunder, although they aren’t “adventures” it’s still technically a footnote in the lore I suppose.
But as usual I really enjoyed this video, it’s nice to get some supplemental info on the process behind the videos and new info.
I don’t know. Johnny is making a little more than a cameo in those sets, and they otherwise have very little to do with Adventurers. I might pick one up eventually… 🤔
I think the everest bridge set was built wrong but that's fine cause lego is meant to be built how you want it to be built
What?? A Lego set that was retired in a single year? I thought 3 years was the standard run, in fact I was directly told this by a marketing employee when Alien Conquest was new. When did that change?
No idea, but modern sets are a "blink and you miss it" sort of affair. I think it's criminal how quickly Pirates Of Barracuda Bay was retired. 😔

"dingus" is quite comparable to the German word "ding", or variants like "dings", "dingens", or "dingsbums". Which also means thing
Yeah, I’ve been reading some suggestions of this nature. It’s certainly odd no matter how you slice it!
@R.R. Slugger if you ever go to Louisville, Kentucky, do you become a Louisville Slugger?
I think so! 😂
I think 1st time I saw aerosleigh was in Donald Duck magazine.
Where's the patreon!?
It'll go live on July 1st! There's going to be a video about it on Monday. 😊
Video taking 3 months to make, why dose that sound familiar?
It's crazy that not a one of these sets took a stab at depicting the iconic Tibetan prayer flags. Perhaps their omission was out of respect but the sets already depict Buddhist holy sites, I don't think their inclusion would have made the theme any more or less insensitive to Tibetan culture. I just see it as a huge missed opportunity for some beautiful 2x2 printed plates hanging off these sets.
We have a dutch word it's "dinges" it means stuff
yeah, I brought this up the first time the Golden Dingus was discussed, since as my grandparents used it it would be something like "thingy." The Maltese Falcon/20s slang explanation seems to make more sense than misspelling Dutch, though.
The real treasure was me learning how to spell my grandparents' poor vocabulary along the way.
@@youmukonpaku3168 there are areas in the Netherlands where they pronounce it as dingus tho
@@lynchzchiller1416 yeah, both grandparents who used it said it that way, which is why I originally spelled it as "dingus" instead of "dinges."
Basedplate and slugpilled.
i wish promo sets lasted longer they go away far to quickly lego really out here fomo maxxing
2025
Ain't that the truth! 😂
Gotta say that the box design of this period was particularly bland and ugly with the blue border, compared with the late 90s and early 00s. I don't know what they were thinking
I have to agree. For as much as I love the Orient Expedition, the boxes are a huge miss for me. 👍
@@RRSlugger I see the logic, particularly when they were facing increased competition from megabloks etc, to have a uniform brand design on the boxes for recognition, but the execution left something to be desired.
Love Lego, hate the company...
These videos are bad lol not in a good way 😂
Thanks for watching!
