KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Ridley Scott) - The Best Movie You Never Saw

  • One of the most highly anticipated movies of 2005 was no doubt Ridley Scott's KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. His long-awaited return to historical adventure, following his classic GLADIATOR, it seemed poised to make Orlando Bloom a star and become the definitive film about The Crusades. Instead, the critical reaction to the film was middling and the box office anemic.
    However, once Scott released his director's cut, the film was reevaluated. Critics that hated the film originally suddenly praised it as a masterpiece. Indeed, if you've only seen the theatrical cut you've only seen as husk of this magnificent epic, which co-stars Liam Neeson, Eva Green (whose role is greatly expanded in the director's cut), David Thewlis, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Marton Czokas, Alexander Siddig, and Edward Norton. Join us on The Best Movie You Never Saw as we revisit this often-maligned but incredible film.

    The Director's Cut does the story so much more justice. Each scene looks like a painting. Amazing score. Stellar casting. Orlando Bloom's character portrayal also benefits from the longer cut. Also Eva Greene's charakter gets a real backstory, and a great one. One of my all time favourites as a director's cut. I still wonder why Mr. Scott never won an oscar...

    • @sauron8838
      @sauron8838 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Seaworth 1. I don't understand how Balian is a Mary Sue. The first part of the movie he is depressed and keeps mostly to himself. He then kills the priest and goes to Jerusalem to absolve himself of his sins and those of his mother. Then, after becomimg Baron of Ibelin and transforming the land he rules, he commits adultery, another sin. He is then beaten down by the Saracens, refuses to follow his king's wishes (which is debatable whether it's a good decision or not) and then he casts off Sybilla. Then, admittedly, he manages to protect Jerusalem from Saladin until he willingly lays down his arms, and then returns back to France, where he still is conflicted with grief over his dead wife. I don't understand how that qualifies him as a Mary Sue.

    • @sauron8838
      @sauron8838 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Seaworth 2. Yes, it is anachronistic to some degree yet I also think that it does reflect the Crusades to some degree. It portrays (and rightfully so) many crusaders as greedy and cruel blighters while also showing some to be either righteous altruists or men of god. And when it comes to the Muslims, Salahuaddin is portrayed as being wise but morally ambiguous and very much hell-bent on reclaiming Jerusalem, which would be a accurate mindset for that time, all the while he has a significantly more zealous advisor who seems far more eager for blood than the Sultan.

      I completely agree, except for the unnecessary changing of a single line of dialogue. when Godfrey de Ibelin and company get ambushed in the woods, in the director's cut we learn that the leader of the assailants is his nephew. Interesting bit of information. But, before the attack (here comes the line change), he says "You are my uncle. I must give you the road."
      I hate this.
      The original line was "You are a lord. I must give you the road." Not only did the original line make more sense as the nephew did not have a lordship, but keeping the original line would have been a great verbal indicator that he'd effectively disavowed his familial ties to Godfrey and now viewed him as an enemy. A great bit of contextual storytelling that was cut for no real purpose other than...reasons.

      What people don’t pay attention to was that they filmed Gladiator without a completed script and were making things up as they went along. So it’s kind of a miracle it ended up as good as it did. When you watch Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut only), it feels like they had a full script ready when they began filming.

    I have seen both the Theatrical and Director's Cut versions ane I love them both. After Alien and Blade Runner, this film is (at least for me) Ridley's 3rd best. I honestly think this film was never meant to be historically accurate but rather used a historical event like The Crusades as merely an allegory to make a commentary on politics and religion. "What man is a man who does not make the world better" seem to imply that it is way more about our actions (everybody's, not just a single individual's) towards our world and its creatures, the here and the now, to make something better out of this existential plane; not necessarily something only achievable through belief in an afterlife (if there is such a thing to begin with).
    Since you mentioned it on this video, I would love to see a The Best Movie You Never Saw about Master and Commander; criminally underrated film in my opinion.

    I just watched this movie without knowing that there was a directors cut. Most parts felt disconnected and the characters and scenes seemed to jump around a lot which really made it hard to follow the story and connect with the world. Aside from that the plot, cinematography and Ridley's take on the crusades made the movie far more interesting and showed me what it could have been. I'm really going to have to watch the directors cut because this movie is a couple of scenes away from being an incredible watch and it pisses me off that so many movies are ruined due to time cuts and other factors.

      The directors cut is one of the best ever released and probably the vision Ridley Scott wanted for the film before studio stupidity. This is one of the few films I've seen in both theatrical release and directors cut where there's a clear difference between what the studio wanted and what the director wanted.
      I feel this is one of Ridley Scott's best films if he was allowed to have full control of what he wanted to do for the project.

    Saw this movie theatrically when it came out. I did enjoy it, but was overjoyed with the directors cut coming out later. Beautiful, gritty, and moving. The score is wonderful and the parable of religious war goes on and on, even hundreds of years later. I remember the image of the gold cross emerging from the desert and I was deeply moved, because it seems like humans will never move away from war as a way of conflict resolution. Definite recommend. Beautiful blu ray.

    I was disappointed when I watched this at the cinema, but I had watched the much edited version. When I watched the directors cut on bluray years later I was very surprised how different and how much better it actually was. And like all Ridley Scott films, it is visually very impressive and every scene a feast for the eyes.

    I can't image how much effort people put in this film to make it happen but I appreciate every aspect of it.
    Great story, cinematography, characters, acting, brilliant score, some truly epic battles but above all a great massage.
    Ridley Scott and Zack Snyder (with Watchmen and his version of Justice League) must be the two director's who must suffers in the hands of the studios, almost all of their works have huge cuts that has direct impact in the story and quality of the film. I have no ideia why the studio would cut a whole story arc that enriches so much Eva Green's character.

    The definitive four hour version is utter perfection.

    This film, in the full director's cut, is an out & out Masterpiece, from start to end. IMO, Ghassan Massoud , Eva Green & Martin Gsokas gave Oscar worthy performances ; the cinematography is beautiful, the score, evocative, & Orlando Bloom was precisely who Ridley Scott & William Monaghan needed Balian to be. No, he wasn't Mel Gibson riding his horse & screaming for war ; as Balian, he reacted to all he encountered, & at the end, he made the wise decision to surrender Jerusalem, live on, & " let God do with it as He wills. " . This is just a magnificent film ; I have it on DVD, & have seen it 12 times. I never tire of cinema this great. Ridley is a Master Director, & IMO, this is the finest achievement in his long career. ------------------MJL, 77 y/o
