    TULUNI FESTIVAL
    Tulini is one of the
major festivals celebrated annually in Sumi Community. This festival is
called Tuluni, meaning crops in the field are already caught up together
to same stature. And Anih means richness/Wealth. It is celebrated on 8"
July every year on the last part of the forth month of sowing.
The significance of Tuluni is mainly to prevent natural calanmities
such as unfavorable climatic conditions and insects from destroying the
crops while they are in growing stage. It is celebrated for seven
    consecutive days as follows:-
    1. Asuzani (Monday) (Millet day):- Of all the crops Sumi sow the
millet first in the field and therefore this day is called Millet Day.
Clearing the traditional footpath leading to will and neighboring
villages takes place. Clearing jungles surrounding the village is
    done on this day.
    2. Aghizani (Tuesday) (Paddy day):- This is the second day of the
festival when all the necessary arrangement is being made for the
    week long celebrations.
    3. Ashigheni (Wednesday) (slaughtering day):- All the villages have
their working group for field works. And each group has to earn
money to buy pigs to be slaughtered on this day. They would
butcher the meat and share equally among the members of the
Alojimi (group). The head of the animal killed shall go to Alojipapu
(group leader). And the remaining meat shall be kept for the feast
    the next day-Anighini.
    4. Anijhimi (Tuesday) (main day):- This day is feasting and merry
making day. All other essential commodities have to be collected
from each and every member of the Alojimi and Alojilimi prepare
    food for the feast.
The would-be son-in-law with his one friend would be hosted by
the Father-in-law and fed during the festival. On his departure, he
would be sent home along with half of the pig killed and prepared
food to his parents. This is called "Alhukho" meaning 'feeding
package'. Before actual feast takes place there used to be inter-
group competition in sports vizi high jump, long jump, leg fight
and kicking spear heads. They also sing varieties of lejole (folk
songs). This is in fact the day of feasting and merry making.
    5. Mucholani (Friday) Footh path clearing:- on this day old male
folks have to clear footpaths leading to kheti (field). They are
supposed to get ready with lunch and wine and start going to
Alaghazu (shed) and keep them there. Then they would proceed
to their respective kheti (field) and on reaching it, they would
make fire and burn the Ashikimithe (clean meat) and place an egg
on the top of dried wood. Then they would go up to platform and
shout, "Hai crops, let your roots shoot down to the water and let
your leaves shoot up to the hills". Then start clearing the footpath
from kheti hut towards home. It means they are inviting AMU
(wealth) from the field towards home.
    6. Tupulani (Saturday) Clearing footpath by youths:- This is for
male youths to clear the site in the river or in the spring of water
for bath and washing. They also arrange something to place the
    load while resting.
    7. Tughakhani (Sunday) End of the celebration:-This is closing of the
celebrations, the end of all activities of festival. Nobody in the
village shall go out of the village either to kheti or any other
works, lest he/she would be faced with misfortunes.
