    Admittedly, I have never sailed blue water (tho have spent a fair amount of time sailing Great Lakes) … Why would you not just pull it dingy up tight to the transom to avoid the rough seas?

    • @NielsJensenSailingSVFreelance
      @NielsJensenSailingSVFreelance ปีที่แล้ว

      Actuallly, in those conditions, the best solution is to have a longer painter for the dinghy, and as much as possible tow the tender just behind the crest of the second or third wave behind the boat. The further back, the better. The line in the water through the first or second wave will absorb much of the shock loads and keep the dinghy pretty much in place. I've done it with my dinghy during a gale on Lake Superior.

    The quality of your video production just gets better and better -- BRAVO!
    While I understand the notion of adding drama to your production, allow me to offer a couple of thoughts as related to SAFETY of crew and vessel.
    Along the way, I have had the good fortune of having great teachers / mentors -- high time / high mileage -- both military & civilian.
    Anecdotally and for context -- at various places in the world -- I have piloted aircraft and also captained various "surface vessels".
    Appropriately, the very first question I was asked at my check ride for PIC, USN -- "What is your primary responsibility as PIC?"
    The correct answer is -- verbatim from the NATOPS Manual -- "the safe and orderly conduct of the flight".
    1. With that boat -- with14 kts indicated -- at the anchorage -- at time of departure -- one reef in the main was called for at the outset!
    As the old saying goes: "Reef early, Reef often".....right along with "ounce of prevention ...pound of cure".
    Comparatively - it is very easy to put in a reef while at anchor -- as compared to doing same while underway.
    Correspondingly, it is much safer / simpler, therefore much more comfortable to shake a reef that you don't need - than it is to put a reef in, that you do need, while underway!
    2. Simple safety practice: Find a 6 -8 ft length of ~3/8 braided line. Once the anchor is hoisted and "in the rollers" on deck, securely tie the anchor to the bow cleat. Then....in the event there is an subsequent inadvertent "release" of the anchor / chain while underway (e.g. windlass electrical fault resulting in discharge of chain, or chain links hopping out of the gypsy, or similar) -- the anchor will remain in the rollers as affixed to the cleat. Otherwise -- with an inadvertent discharge of anchor chain -- you will have an out of control anchor, swinging wildly underwater -- that will very likely hole the vessel. Bonus side effect -- with anchored tied -- the otherwise tension between anchor and windlass can be eased / released.
    There are people out there who have learned this lesson the hard way!
    End of sermon!😎😎
    Happy New Year!

    • @Sailingdoodles
      @Sailingdoodles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well to answer 1… there was less than 10 knots at anchor, we had to motor for the first half hour until the wind picked up to 14kt sailing downwind. No reason at all to reef. After more than an hour of sailing the wind quickly picked up to 25 kts. So thanks for the advice but without being there you can really know what was happening.
      2. It’s a charter boat, if it was my boat I would tie off the anchor. I’m just using the charter boat as supplied

    • @3cap97
      @3cap97 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sailingdoodles Thanks for the clarification .
      I must have misunderstood the sequence of wind velocity changes.
      The fact is, that boat "wants" a reef at 14-15 kts and a second at 25.
      As have you, I have sailed boats all over the world, in all sorts of wx.
      When doing so, whether charter or private delivery, I travel with my on kit....toothbrush, sunglasses, hat, shoes, leatherman, tablet w/ charts and a number of other items... including spare line -- along with various lengths of Dyneema, I bring along a couple of 8' lengths of 1/4" and a 10" section of 3/8" of double braid.
      Any boat / any where -- best practice -- I tie off the anchor!
      Because, whenever there is an out of control, Delta flailing about while underway....
      I am pretty sure a holed 50' FRP charter vessel sinks about the same way as a holed 50' FRP private vessel!
      Therefore....personally / happily... I have never experienced either case!
      And...if you think that is not a prudent practice -- so be it .
      When you're the skipper -- it's your choice!
      Cheers!
