    I was fortunate enough to have him at both of my black belt tests. My Shihan was one of his first students. (Shihan Clyde Coy- Stickman in Greenburgh) He asked him to come for just me and my sister for our promotion to 1st dan. He also came 2 years later for my promotion to 2nd dan. I'm so grateful to have known him. Osu!

    A true man of honor, the embodiment of Bushido. I had the great fortune of being one of his students. He imparted the gift of the way to me more than 30 years ago that I still carry in my heart & mind to this day. Grand Master Shigeru Oyama lives on in all of his dedicated students. The martial arts is not simply a form of self defense, but a way to live your life in a honorable way. That was his gift to us and the world.

    Awesome video. I too had the honor of training in his NYC dojo in 1993. A true master and excellent teacher. The full contact training and sparring in every class is the difference that makes a difference!

    I trained at the dojo on 6th Ave from 1982-1987 until I messed up my knee. I had to stop training after that. I stopped by after about 6 months. Saiko Shihan sees me taking to Sensei Hioki and he yells, “John, you got fat!! Need come back training!!” 😂😂

    Where was Soshu Shigeru's Kyokushin dojo in NYC? Was it in Koreantown?

    • @senseiruss
      @senseiruss 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was on 6th Ave (Avenue of the Americas) near West 4th Street. It was above the old department store, M.H. Lamston's. I went trained there briefly in 1983, before he left Kyokushin and started his own World Oyama Karate. He was, to put it mildly…intense! OSU!

    Why is his surname Oyama? Is he related to the Kyokushin founder?

    • @Gieszkanne
      @Gieszkanne 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oyama is not the real name of the founder.
