  • Why would anybody want to have a snake as a pet? That question comes up a lot with people who keep them. It's sometimes hard to put into words what it is that attracts us to them. I've been thinking a lot about this and I'm going to try to break down what might be the reason that we choose to keep snakes. This might help you explain it to your friends and family if you're a snake keeper, and it might help you understand if you're one of the many people who just doesn't get it.

    Snake pros:
    * they are gorgeous
    * they are great for people with allergies
    * they don't mind if you don't handle them everyday
    * they don't eat often
    * no hair on the furniture / clothing
    * it's easy to take a few days away guilt free
    * they don't need to be groomed
    * they don't jump up on guests
    * no litter boxes
    * creating their enclosures is fun
    * their enrichment / toys can be super cheap or free (found outside, around the house, or from the dollar store)
    * actually are / can be quite cuddly
    * they are mesmerizing
    * you always know where they are if you keep your enclosure secure
    * some people avoid you and your house ***bonus***
    * snake sweaters
    * they are slow moving and very relaxing to hold (specifically Rosy Boas)
    Snake cons:
    * they eat adorable rodents, frogs, fish, or other snakes
    * you can't tell if they are sleeping or just being still
    * they don't play fetch well at all
    * some don't like to be handled
    * finding a good local exotics vet who is sometimes tough
    * they are escape artists
    * if they do get out of your house, some people will kill them just because they are a snake
    * you can't keep a cool, sparkly collar on them
    * they don't do tricks

    There's few things cuter than the little snoot of a ball python with their little tongues and pretty round eyes. They're literally right up there with cats on cuteness level.

    I'm a wicked introvert and am diagnosed with narcolepsy, so I really, really appreciate a quiet environment. I find snakes to be exactly the way you described them in a video from over a year ago when you said they are like "the monks of the animal kingdom" which is precisely what I look for in a companion animal. When somebody asks me why I like snakes, I just tell them they're the perfect pet for the narcoleptic introvert.
    Surprisingly, people are very understanding of that.

    I was the fear person. Was totally petrified of them. Started watching a handful of folks here on TH-cam and then finally visited a reptile show. I now own 18 snakes. It is really hard to explain why other than they help me relax and calm down most days when things are tough.

      That was me! I had a “traumatic experience” with a Burmese python when I was 6 (the snake was huge and little me thought it was trying to “eat me”) looking back I was just being dramatic and i was perfectly safe haha
      Once I started learning about snakes, I just really fell in love with them and the love their owners have for them.
      I went to an expo and came home with a snake. He is such a light in my life that none of my mammals have been able to give me the way he has. It’s hard to explain why to people that don’t understand how rewarding reptiles can be.

      I think, for me anyway, knowing if I'm calm and confident that my snakes will be more relaxed and trusting of me is a big help to reducing my anxiety and a ball python's slower locomotion calms me down considerably when I'm struggling to keep a panic attack at bay.

    I find snakes beautiful and cute with their blunt little faces and round eyes. They are also not too expensive to keep (depending of course on breed) after the initial big terrarium and heating has been arranged. I dont want a pet that needs my constant attention 😅 My corn snake and I are happy interacting occasionally but I like knowing she appreciates her me time as much as I do.

    Reptiles are super pets for nerds. You get to do all kinds of research and as a bonus, you get a chill and cute pet, be a part of an awesome community and get an all-encompassing hobby. I also worry easily for my pets, and had no idea how low maintenance a snake can be, which gives some peace of mind instead of worrying how he is doing. Our new ball python's calm demeanor creates a sense of peace in the house.
    I talk to animals, too, and think people who don't, are weird -and sort of scary.

I usually say nothing when people ask me why I would ever want a snake as a pet. I just use a range of facial expressions that make them think I am crazy, but also think that maybe they are a little crazy as well, then I just nod and give them a little giggle and walk away or change the subject.

    I use to not be fond of snakes, then I started watching reptile TH-cam videos and was learning about them. It got to the point that I really wanted one and I did my research on what they require, this took a long time, once I felt I was knowledgeable enough, then I looked for a ball python that caught my eye. He's been the most amazing first reptile to have and I love him so much, he's starting to crawl out his cage and into my hand when I open his enclosure. He also perks up (at least I want to imagine that lol) when I get home from work and he starts going toward where I open the cage so he can come out, I think it's a phase but we'll see!

    From my perspective snakes are fairly clean as well. Since they don’t defecate very often and their food source is only in their enclosure for a short period of time. That goes back to what you said about not having a smell. I have never liked the idea of having a pet in my home due to my personal cleanliness but with a snake it doesn’t seem to be an issue as long as I maintain the enclosure and spot clean and fully replace the substrate etc as needed.

    I don’t have a snake yet, but want one as soon as I know I can give one a proper home. I’m not sure why I love them so much, maybe it’s because they’re so maligned and I love underdogs. I’ve met them and I’ve held them, and I LOVED it. And they didn’t seem to be uncomfortable with me, so that’s a win!

    Another awesome video. And it made me think.... why do I like snakes? My lil' ball python is completely different from most 'common' pets. And he's certainly completely different from a person - and that's exactly WHY I love him. He's fascinating. And it's interesting to me to even try to comprehend how he thinks and views the world. I know he doesn't love me. He can't. But I'm probably his favorite tree, and it's a low-pressure friendship, lol. I agree with you too about liking their movements, and the feel of handling them - probably thing that most freak non-snake people out. personally, I find a python's slow movement calming.

    I got into reptiles because of frequent and long work trips. I wanted a pet but it had to be something that does not need a lot of human interaction and maitenance so that I could ask a friend to come over once or twice a week to feed it. So i got a leopard gecko. One day when I was shopping for crickets I got into a conversation about different animals with a pet store employee who is a snake keeper. He told me how awesome they are and gave me one of their BPs to handle. Two years later I am an owner of three snakes and can't state enough how perfect of a pet they are to me.

    This is a great video that I kinda want to link to everyone who's gone "oh..." when we told them we got a little ball python, lol.
    I admit, I'm one of those people who would have gotten a cat except that I'm super allergic. But my wife and I researched for ages on alternative pets, and we wouldn't have gotten our little Hestia if we weren't super stoked on snakes for their own reasons. They're not mammals! They're not social animals! but they are SO COOL in their own right. My dad, who was a field biologist when I was a kid used to bring home garter snakes he'd catch (we went back out and re-released them after about a week or so), and I think my fascination started there. There's something so alien, and yet so relatable, about snakes as a type of animal.

    I've had a fascination with snakes and reptiles in general partly because A) my mom was terrified, B) they're hyperspecialized, much like insects, to whatever "job" they have and seeing how different localities and genus present across multiple continents fill that role is very cool to me and, C) they do have a personality, albeit its very different than ours, kinda like fish. They are perfectly capable of developing relationships on their own and being trained with food-centric methods as long as you understand that the relationship is closer to their level than yours, if that makes sense. I've grown up around fuzzy and aquatic pets all my life, and while they're soothing they're an awful lot of work. I'm hoping one day to own a snake or reptile of some sort. I'm still in the research stage atm, since there's a huge burden of knowledge to properly caring for reptiles like there is in aquatics, but when I'm finally in a position to own one I hope I'll be ready...ish.

She did immediately came out of her hiding place and watched as I moved her dinner like imitating it being alive. She got really confused and just watched. She did take it once I accidentally dropped it and it lay motionless. She's already grown, no one knows how old she may be. But yeah, no chance she'd survive in the wild. Seems to be a gentle personality as far as I can tell.

I'll have the enclosure all set up and operating at temperature a week before and the trip away gives my new snake time to settle in. I did stick a wireless security camera in the enclosure so I can check in on my pet while away. I'm getting a Woma python.

    i used to be scared but while in a reptile shop buying bugs for my beardie i held some bps and i fell in love! they’re so cute and i love learning about them and i love handling them. i love how you can have totally different handling experiences holding different types of snakes (why i want so many) the first time holding my brazilian rainbow boa i was like this is insane cause i was so used to my bps. i love watching them grow and learning about their individual personalities and watching them slowly grow more comfortable with me! this weekend some friends were holding one of my boys and he kept trying to come back to me. and i have one who came to me very defensive but he’s slowly getting so much better and it’s just so amazing to watch his progress i’m so proud of him. i love my noodles and i love all my other pets as well 💕

    I got into snakes after holding a friend's ball python. The experience was totally different than I expected. They were so chill and these relaxing grippy muscle ropes! My prior experiences were mostly flighty wild black racers around the yard of our house. We had a baby get in our house once and boy he was feisty! This is kinda why I'm so in favor of school programs that introduce animals or classroom pets. Once you've been around them a bit, you see them totally differently. Once you get to know snakes, you see how much difference there is between species. Fear tends to be passed down through teaching. I have a family friend terrified of snakes because as a kid, his aunt would freak out about them. I've had both my parents hold my snakes and they've been like "wow this isn't what I expected."
    We were a hamster and cat family, so I was pretty neutral about reptiles- anything "exotic" seemed like it would be difficult to keep and beyond me. (Granted back in the day I'm sure there were fewer shops with things like feeder mice and insects.)
    This does kinda apply to keeping pet arachnids. No really, they're fascinating. Tarantulas are very sensory and reactive, but each species has a different nature. Jumping spiders are very curious and interactive. I haven't kept something like a wolf spider but I've been wanting to, because they kind of intimidate me.

    I love my snake and my cat and they give me different things, its nice to talk about and hear peoples opinion on them. Last night, I opened my BP's cage when she was coming out and I held out my hand to her. She went right up to it and sniffed it and put her little head in it for a second before going to explore. It makes you feel very honored, to have an essentially wild animal, however tame it may be, trust you enough to go up to you. And as someone who loves hiking and wildlife but is versed enough in ecology enough to not want to pick up the wild snakes i find outside, I think having a pet like a snake is a nice way of keeping a piece of the wild in my home.
    And I do say wild- even though she was born in captivity, probably several generations (Shes a rescue so idk actually, but shes pastel so she's definitely captive bred at some point)- we still don't fully understand genetics but its safe to say even tame, captive born pets like snakes (and hamsters, frankly, imo) aren't truly domestic the way even a pigeon is. I do wonder if snakes are capable of some level of domestication down the line, given the amount of captive breeding thats gone on in recent history, its interesting. On one hand, breeders are selecting for color instead of temperament, but things like the russian fox domestication experiment show that unique color patterns crop up as you select for temperaments. I wonder if it mostly has to do with just the scrambling of the genes due to so little selection pressure. Maybe captive breeding of certain snakes will lead to calmer temperaments, which would be good in the long term since snakes would be less stressed due to captivity! (not that that would be practical, possible or even wanted for most snakes, but for commonly kept snakes like ball pythons...)

    I’ve always had furries like rats, gerbils and guinea pigs, I love them, and I still have loads of guinea pigs, but for a pet to live in my room with me I found snakes have been the best fit for that.
    They’re interesting to watch, quiet, have no odour, easy to look after, want for nothing, and are relaxing to handle and hang out with . I also enjoy the questions and intrigue they seem to inspire, so many people don’t appreciate them enough and you can almost always teach someone something they didn’t know (unless they too are a snake person)
    If you can get over the rodent thing and the fact they don’t ‘love you’ like dogs etc then they’re awesome pets.

    In my opinion, you can ask "why THAT animal?" about any species kept as a pet. Everyone will have a different answer depending on the animal they've chosen to add to their family.
    Personally, I was raised to fear snakes no matter what species and once I became an adult and started researching reptiles after finding an injured Eastern fence lizard, I kept running into snakes everywhere I went on the internet. Then I spotted a photo on Facebook of a ball python an acquaintance was trying to rehome and saw a poor creature who was too thin, had stuck shed everywhere and a look in his eyes that just... called to me. That snake is my Zeus and I'll forever be grateful that my husband had an open mind and bought him for 60 bucks as my birthday gift. I now own 3 ball pythons, a king snake and a corn snake, and that's just my legless reptiles.
    Another thing I found was that handling my snakes causes me to focus on being calm and deliberate in my actions so they feel comfortable, safe and secure with me. Building up that trust-bond with any reptile or exotic (non-domesticated) animal is so fascinating to me and can take much longer than people think, but once that trust is there you can see the results quite clearly and for myself it's much more satisfying an accomplishment than just about anything else I've attempted.

      They're found all over West Africa though, even in non-farm areas. There has never really been an attempt in West Africa to domesticate them and it would have taken thousands of years. But in captivity they "seem" pretty close to domesticated just because they're such a docile species.

    I keep snakes because they fascinate me. Same reason I keep fish. I can't handle my fish though. Lol

    the meme: you get a dog if you need to be treated like a god. you get a cat so the house isn't empty. you get anything else because you're fascinated by animals.

    The reason I got a lizard is that I always liked reptiles, wanted a blue tongue since i was 10 and I'm allergic to cats and dogs. Side not I do want a snake.

    ok I'll give you that one, the accent wasn't that bad. First sentence was more accented London, second was Queen's English/BBC English but still from the south which is better than 99.9% of most Americans manage. :D

    Hey Bob, sorry to bug with another question but how often should I feed my one year old male ball Python?

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  ปีที่แล้ว

      The age doesn't really matter. It's more about the size. If it's a smaller snake every 7 to 10 days is a good schedule and for a larger snake that's getting closer to adult size every 10 to 14 days is good. I feed my adult males once every two weeks

      @@GreenRoomPythons he’s pushing 500 grams and I feel like every 10 days is to soon because he hasn’t been very interested in his food like he used to when he was a little smaller.

    I mean they can't cuddle but I look forward to having a ball python that can chill around my neck while I do homework... also I'm not allergic to them so I won't be miserable like I am with cats or dogs.
