  • From plant pollination to pest control, explore how bats contribute to ecosystems and the importance of protecting bats to reduce the risk of transmitting disease.
    --
    What flies through the night, silently guarding and protecting our world from evil? Batman? Try... a bat. Like Batman, bats are widely misunderstood and vilified. Amy Wray disproves the myth that bats are dangerous villains and explains why they, instead, deserve a hero's welcome -- and our protection.

    About 10 years ago, I found a bat in my kitchen. I was surprised that it looked more like a cute mouse with wings than a blood-sucking animal. I called Animal Control and was surprised to see them place the bat it in a ziploc bag which they closed right up. Then I received a call telling me that the bat tested negative for rabies, but it was put to sleep anyways. I mention this because the video advises to call Animal Control, but I doubt they know that some centers would just kill the bat. This is a great video and it's too bad that bats are unnecessarily vilified. I'll definitely share this video with others.

    • @kelseylash23
      @kelseylash23 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I thought the only way to test for rabbies is to kill the animal. Because rabbies is a disease that affects the brain and you can't tell if an animal has it unless you look at its brain.

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Kela Seyh Good point, Kela! What you said did sound familiar. I just read this: www.cdc.gov/rabies/diagnosis/animals-humans.html I remember that Animal Contol said made it sound like if I had been bitten by the bat, I could feel better that I didn't have rabies, as it tested negative. But I hadn't been bitten, so I didn't understand why a test to kill the bat was necessary.

    • @ivarbjrnsen8646
      @ivarbjrnsen8646 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      ***** The saliva needs to be 'introduced' into our body - usually, but not always, through a bite. Simply touching it will not give you rabies. There are other symptoms to look for as well. :)

      I was bitten in the hand by a wild hamster more than a year ago, after cleaning the tiny wound I called disease control and asked if I need a vaccine. They told me that rabies are found mostly in city wild dogs and cats, and transmit quickly because these animals often fight and survive with bleeding wounds. Smaller animals like hamsters, when encountering rabies carrying dogs and cats, rarely survives so there
      's little chance of transmission. In fact the last hamster bite transmit record they have was an infection in the 1980s so I would probably be fine, and I am fine.
      Don't know if it's the same with bats. But it can be something similar.

    You know, somebody should use Batman for an animal preservation PSA. In his case it would be bats like in this video. And then Beastboy could be used for a more general one. Bumblebee could be used for one for bees.
    Basically, any hero that has an animal or plant based power or motif could be used for really effective PSAs.

They snatched it with their stick grabber thing so violently, I swear it seriously injured the poor creature. The whole experience still bothers me. Poor bat.

    I loved how you worked all of the Batman lore into this wonderful presentation. Another way to help save bats is to stop using vast wind turbine farms as they are responsible for the death of over half a million bats every year. For those interested in a better green alternative (as those turbines are hardly green to begin with) I suggest thorium nuclear reactors which use a non-fissile element to power the reactor core.

      @@pia1945 id say its because of the near impossible amount of resources and the money that, if it was in Texas, America wouldn't have. Iirc, i saw a Prager U ad that stated that nuclear energy, if used properly, is the worlds best form of energy to farm, but least popular cause there is no good way to remove the byproducts(we have a bunch of examples about that), and we've seen the horrors of what nuclear power can do if it fails at any given point(another event we've unfortunately seen a bit of in recent history)

    When I was a kid I found a bat disorientated on the ground. It got blown by a strong wind into the side of my house.
