I saw it in a small theatre in a small town in Finland. I always read Empire Magazine (a movie magazine) and it was so hyped in it, and a smash hit in the UK, so I had to see go see it. Then I watched over and over again on VHS. I worked in a movie rental, and I think I had this tape at home for like a year. But then I took almost 20 years me to watch it again.
Fun fact: Jason Statham sales pitch in the beginning of the film was the bit everyone trying out for the part had to audition with and he got it because he actually used to sell shady goods on the corner like that before becoming an actor.
Funner fact: that sales pitch comes from a short clip on London Market Traders shot in the 1970s, it's on youtube, Statham pretty much repeats the traders words verbatim

@@alfredthegreat9543 i think its vastly underrated. i believe that people went into it with too high hopes, having seen lock stock and snatch its not quite them, but if you didn't know it was a guy ritchie film and just went into it, you're far more likely to enjoy it.
Soundtrack to this one is incredible, as well. Ritchie had an immediate instinct for musical accompaniment, Scorsese style. The songs are all great, and perfectly placed. And that bassline.
He did a rewatch of Snatch recently on TH-cam and said pretty much all his soundtrack songs are on a Rolodex of tracks from various pub jukeboxes from his life that he just loved.
Rory Breaker is a scene stealer with so many good one liners ... and i love the fact that he is so intense about his sports that the whole incident at the bar was about a 4-0 soccer game which pretty much is a blow out and all but decided
Defo, Shane Meadows has a brilliant resume of film making and shows how you can enclose a story on a budget but still make you feel like you have gotten a movie experience.
A bleak gut puncher that stays with you. Whilst often hilarious for macabre reasons, it was to hard to find even a tiny bit of hope in this film. A great film but hard to watch.
I think this one edges out Snatch as my favorite simply because of how amazingly well orchestrated the storytelling was, and the sheer amount of mania of the heist-gone-wrong.
That's a great way to describe what makes this movie great: the texture. everything in the movie from the visuals to the writing share a texture unlike anything else when this came out

Along with being an unlicensed boxer, McLean was an enforcer in London's criminal underworld. As a respected and feared figure, he often associated with infamous East End of London Gangsters criminals The Kray twins also Ronnie Biggs and Charles Bronson. He was also known in the London nightclub scene as a bouncer, where he often managed security. I’m watching a dvd about him called The Guvnor

I've loved Guy Ritchie movies forever. He has a Shakespearean talent for pulling all these subplots together from a seemingly chaotic mess. A lot of people in this that I forgot. Rob Bryden as the cop who gets knocked out into the back of the van, Nicholas Rowe (tall weed dealer who gets his foot blown off) was Sherlock in Spielbergs 80s flick Young Sherlock Holmes. and Danny John-Jules who was the Cat in Red Dwarf.
That's always been my thought too. It's such an iconic British heist film that I'm positive Guy Richie was influenced by it, and the ending is just a perfect nod to The Italian Job's literal cliffhanger ending.

I love the little details in the movies. Hatchet Harry's right hand man was a very famous London hardman called Lennie McLean. He passed away a few yeara ago but if you read his story or TH-cam it another dimension to lock Stock gets added. Brilliant..
Watching your reaction to this film is almost like watching this film for the first time for me! I have seen it to the point of being able to quote nearly all of it in the most irritating accent! I’m sure someone mentioned this by now, but this was Ritchie’s first film - raw, low budget, and utterly brilliant! No question it’s his best, hands down. I had the incredible fortune to be living in South London when this film came out over there. I was 22, work/lived in a pub, and the young locals & I became fast (party) friends. They planned an outing when a few of us were off shift at the pub, and we all went to see this in the theater together. The Brits were SO excited for this film, and neither the film nor the audience disappointed. Mayhem in the theater as well as on screen. It was a legendary experience. Here is one more detail that is incredibly f-ing cool and further ties me to this film in a big way. As I said, the pub I work/lived in was in South London. Battersea is the name of the neighborhood, so named because it was just across the - you guessed it - Battersea Bridge. Yes, that same bridge at the end of the film… which we walked across regularly and which we walked across on our way home from the film. Needless to say, everyone had a turn pretending to be Tom.
Completely agree!! For me it’s such a fun film and I feel like Richie just had fun and tried out a lot of cool stuff when making it, not to mention the killer soundtrack! It’s a favorite for me!
It’s crazy that the dude who played Soap became a big time director of Eddie The Eagle & Rocketman! Can’t wait to see what he does with the Sherlock Holmes franchise.
This is one of my most loved, most quoted films ever. Came out when I was 18. Holy shit. haha Yeah, when I saw you react to Snatch, I REALLY hoped you'd come back to this one. For your sake. haha This one was an instant classic and a real "Who the hell is this director?" moment.
I'm waay late to the comments, but the algorithm just pushed me this video. Great reactions, this really is one of the classics of British crime cinema. Some of the other films recommended by others are all good picks. You may also enjoy In Bruges, and Sexy Beast.
16mm is an underrated medium. Some movies, that extra grit is like its own character. Everything doesn't have to be ultra high resolution all the time, sometimes movies can be a little grimy.
Character. 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, they all add a level of character, just as black and white (sepia-toned) vs technicolor in The Wizard of Oz. It makes a movie's personality.
Here is a weird suggestion for you, The Hood series. The films are Kidulthood (06), Adulthood (08), and Brotherhood (16). They are UK crime films but from the perspective of kids in the inner city. The first two are the best but the third is a lot of fun too. An interesting watch mostly because it's a different side of the UK that had very little media made about it at the time and through the series you see a lot of actors who went on to bigger things. The series soundtrack even helped popularise grime with a lot of the actors being UK rappers as well namely Stormzy in Brotherhood just before he became massive.
Interesting fact, the bald guy who hangs out with hatchet harry was a real life bare knuckle boxer/bouncer/gangster in east london called Lennie McLean.

This film is incredibly well shot and stylised, the music score, the humour and pace of the film is very good, Lock Stock is a hugely underrated piece of cinema.
IIRC this film was Jason Statham's first. He was discovered by Ritchie working as a bouncer in a club and Ritchie just saw his face and thought "this is the guy I want in my movie"
He did do a few. Of those i've seen, Quadrophenia, The Bride & Dune as well as a couple of little cameos but i'm sure he did a few more. Not like he needs the money though is it 🤣 He probably just does stuff for mates these days. He did very well with the accent i thought.

I read his autobiography. Towards the end he spoke about discovering his joy of acting a bit too late in life because he was then diagnosed with cancer. It was a poignant end to a crazy life story. I found him fascinating, but I couldn't shake off the fact that he was a gangster and brought untold misery to folks life.
This is one of my favorite films. The character development is spot on and kind of fascinating because he does it swiftly, but you know who these people are.
Saw this film in 1998 on the opening night in the cinema. Stopped off in the car park to smoke some weed in the car with my mates before hand and we lost track of time (as you do) The tickets we had were in the front row of the cinema (shit seats I know, but being the opening night, beggars couldn’t be choosers) when we got to the theatre the film was just starting. Instead of disturbing everyone we just laid down in the aisle, stoned at the back of the theatre and proceeded to eat all our munch and watch the film. Seen this film countless times since. That endig gets everyone sitting at the edge of their seat who is seeing it for the first time, but when you're watching it for the second time you're just laughing your ass off from the moment the empty bag is dropped on the table.
what ... the ... hell ... man... I just looked through the movies you have watched this year. I think you have had the best movie year of any person in existence.
Snatch and Lock Stock are definitely shot in exactly the same style, with several of the same actors, but to me the stories were just different enough for me to love both films.
I like to think guy ritchie had so many good ideas for snatch it was easy to make a movie that for the most part stands alone. Some of the "everyone is traveling to the big moment" scenes felt recycled but what are you gonna do? Characters gotta get around from A to B. Usually not a fan of open endings but this is one of my favorite endings in any movie.
Fun fact that bouncer dude who threatend to remove fingers was an unlicensed boxer and very tough bouncer, he had a hell of a reputation and the dad who owned the bar is the singer sting
If you want to see the all time greatest British gangster film then I have to point you in the direction of "The Long Good Friday" with Bob Hoskins. The actor who played Hatchet Harry has a prominent role, and the actor who played Brick Top in "Snatch" also features briefly.
My mom heard this movie playing once, not being into crime films but curious by the dialogue she'd stay to watch it while doing stuff around the house, saying in the end how much she enjoyed it while finishing a Virginia Menthol, her only one for the day. To catch her later on, sleeping with the ending scene and credits blaring in the background, I'd hope she watched the whole thing again. The movie has this Basic Cable Factor, you'd catch it on AMC, USA, TNT and/or TBS, chill out and late lunch the afternoon with a mountain of Chinese takeout on your plate. In my humble opinion, I think the curated films on basic reveal a quality that most, not all, movies today simply do not have anymore, they're preserved.

I think I recommended this before, but you gotta check out Guy Ritchie's Revolver. It's experimental as hell, and one of the most bizarre movies I've ever sat through. And though it's not a Guy Ritchie movie (Matthew Vaughn directs), check out Layer Cake, starring Daniel Craig. It's very similar in style to Ritchie's early work.

Battersea is the name of the neighborhood, so named because it was just across the - you guessed it - Battersea Bridge. Yes, that same bridge at the end of the film… which we walked across regularly and which we walked across on our way home from the film. Needless to say, everyone had a turn pretending to be Tom.
Guy Richie's "King Arthur" is vastly slept on and is one well worth a watch. I watch that movie at least 2-3 times a year, I love it.

welll the music, the editing and the cinematography is great in king arthur.. but the characters and the story are really really bad

The two scousers (guys from Liverpool) in this movie are one of the funniest things about this film.
This is one of my most loved, most quoted films ever. Came out when I was 18. Holy shit. haha Yeah, when I saw you react to Snatch, I REALLY hoped you'd come back to this one. For your sake. haha This one was an instant classic and a real "Who the hell is this director?" moment.
I'm waay late to the comments, but the algorithm just pushed me this video. Great reactions, this really is one of the classics of British crime cinema. Some of the other films recommended by others are all good picks. You may also enjoy In Bruges, and Sexy Beast.

16mm is an underrated medium. Some movies, that extra grit is like its own character. Everything doesn't have to be ultra high resolution all the time, sometimes movies can be a little grimy.
Character. 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, they all add a level of character, just as black and white (sepia-toned) vs technicolor in The Wizard of Oz. It makes a movie's personality.

Here is a weird suggestion for you, The Hood series. The films are Kidulthood (06), Adulthood (08), and Brotherhood (16). They are UK crime films but from the perspective of kids in the inner city. The first two are the best but the third is a lot of fun too. An interesting watch mostly because it's a different side of the UK that had very little media made about it at the time and through the series you see a lot of actors who went on to bigger things. The series soundtrack even helped popularise grime with a lot of the actors being UK rappers as well namely Stormzy in Brotherhood just before he became massive.

This film is incredibly well shot and stylised, the music score, the humour and pace of the film is very good, Lock Stock is a hugely underrated piece of cinema.
IIRC this film was Jason Statham's first. He was discovered by Ritchie working as a bouncer in a club and Ritchie just saw his face and thought "this is the guy I want in my movie"

The bloke playing Barry the Baptist was a real life gangster, Lenny McLean, The Guv’nor.
I read his autobiography. Towards the end he spoke about discovering his joy of acting a bit too late in life because he was then diagnosed with cancer. It was a poignant end to a crazy life story.
I found him fascinating, but I couldn't shake off the fact that he was a gangster and brought untold misery to folks life.
Know hes son. Spitting image of him as well. Not as big....but still big

Saw this film in 1998 on the opening night in the cinema. Stopped off in the car park to smoke some weed in the car with my mates before hand and we lost track of time (as you do) The tickets we had were in the front row of the cinema (shit seats I know, but being the opening night, beggars couldn’t be choosers) when we got to the theatre the film was just starting. Instead of disturbing everyone we just laid down in the aisle, stoned at the back of the theatre and proceeded to eat all our munch and watch the film. Seen this film countless times since. The soundtrack is well worth buying/downloading as it has dialogue from the film as well as the songs used

That endig gets everyone sitting at the edge of their seat who is seeing it for the first time, but when you're watching it for the second time you're just laughing your ass off from the moment the empty bag is dropped on the table.
Layer Cake is a good take on the Snatch and Lock Stock style.

what ... the ... hell ... man... I just looked through the movies you have watched this year. I think you have had the best movie year of any person in existence.
Snatch and Lock Stock are definitely shot in exactly the same style, with several of the same actors, but to me the stories were just different enough for me to love both films.
I like to think guy ritchie had so many good ideas for snatch it was easy to make a movie that for the most part stands alone. Some of the "everyone is traveling to the big moment" scenes felt recycled but what are you gonna do? Characters gotta get around from A to B. Usually not a fan of open endings but this is one of my favorite endings in any movie.
Fun fact that bouncer dude who threatend to remove fingers was an unlicensed boxer and very tough bouncer, he had a hell of a reputation and the dad who owned the bar is the singer sting
If you want to see the all time greatest British gangster film then I have to point you in the direction of "The Long Good Friday" with Bob Hoskins. The actor who played Hatchet Harry has a prominent role, and the actor who played Brick Top in "Snatch" also features briefly.

Watch Man From UNCLE! Not quite the same style, but great movie!!!
My mom heard this movie playing once, not being into crime films but curious by the dialogue she'd stay to watch it while doing stuff around the house, saying in the end how much she enjoyed it while finishing a Virginia Menthol, her only one for the day. To catch her later on, sleeping with the ending scene and credits blaring in the background, I'd hope she watched the whole thing again.
The movie has this Basic Cable Factor, you'd catch it on AMC, USA, TNT and/or TBS, chill out and late lunch the afternoon with a mountain of Chinese takeout on your plate. In my humble opinion, I think the curated films on basic reveal a quality that most, not all, movies today simply do not have anymore, they're preserved.
Okay, now we can maybe see RocknRolla reaction! My favorite Guy Ritchie movie and overall in par with Snatch, Gentlemen and Lock Stock.

You probably know that this movie is Guy Ritchie's debut movie. "Snatch" was his 2nd movie. Another item worth noting, Ritchie started his film career as an advertising director.

I think I recommended this before, but you gotta check out Guy Ritchie's Revolver. It's experimental as hell, and one of the most bizarre movies I've ever sat through.
And though it's not a Guy Ritchie movie (Matthew Vaughn directs), check out Layer Cake, starring Daniel Craig. It's very similar in style to Ritchie's early work.
Revolver is amazing. But you have to see the UK version. They ripped out a lot of great stuff in the US version to dumb it down

@@randalthor741 yea they changed a lot of the 3rd act in the US version and was really dumbed down. If you get a chance to see the UK version it leaves you with a very different experience.
