Disneyland's Indian Village and Adventureland history! 1950s-1970s TIME TRAVEL

  • Disneyland History like you’ve never seen it before! Rare and never before seen footage of the park from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s including Main Street USA, the original Adventureland before the tiki room or Swiss family Robinson treehouse, the long forgotten Adventureland creek, Tahitian terrace, and more!
Then, the path to the forgotten ORIGINAL Indian Village, Magnolia park, Chicken plantation restaurant and frontierland railroad station, and finally a detailed look at Disneyland’s second, much larger “Indian Village” - what it looked like, what was in it, it’s tunnel entrances and crafts, plus see what’s left over from the abandoned idea today; and how a subject most are afraid to look into was actually a much more laudable (if flawed) attempt to provide a complex view of the west before it was bear country or critter country.

That was amazing to learn that Walt Disney actually worked with the Native Americans and employed them to show their culture. Its so sad that it went away.

I do remember the Indian Village as a very young child with my young father. The Indians were very kind to me, very friendly to all the children. Those costumes they wore were real and there was one native chief (?) with a long feather headdress that trailed all the way to the ground! It must have been six or seven feet long. I used to babble away as a four or five year old, and they seemed to enjoy all the children there.
What wasn’t shown in the old films, was the Mule Ride or the Horse Ride with Disneyland guests riding along a trail and back. Mother’s in their full skirts and heels trying to ride along with the kids. That was something!

Great job with the Indian Village info. We really enjoyed hearing how classy and respectful it was intended to be. We are pretty sensitive these days. I think we saw you filming this day. I was wearing the Casa De Frittos shirt, and very awkwardly said "Hi" to you. Sorry about that.

This reminds me of how, during my last visit, I was looking at that little souvenir stand just before the RR tunnel and the exits and remembering all the fun little items they used to have that they don't carry any more (1970s-1980s). Beyond the autograph books, there were pencils, pens, tiny viewers, harmonicas, GAF Viewmaster reels, and other trinkets. All pretty cheap that parents didn't mind getting as a result. Those stands don't have the fun toys any more - just decorative souvenirs mostly. Thanks for the great memories!

My father was one of the performers, and eventually, one of the MC’s of the show. He represented the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Many times I went to work with my father where I spent childhood years. The person in the beaver skin headwear in one of the vintage movie shots, I believe is my father. The film is rather grainy but, the costume looks very familiar. The hoop dancer is family friend, Leonard Tafoya. The teepee the performers enter after a performance is where my father introduced me to Walt Disney, the man!

I'll be 50 next month. Think this memory was from 1985? I remember that parking lot. Grandfather drove four girls to Disney from Arizona. He had leukemia. Remember him soo tired sleeping in the car. When we got there. Step sister and cousin listening to Duran Duran, giggling in the back seat. Pulling my hair. Sitting in a car in that huge parking lot. We were tired too. But too excited to sleep. We got there before it opened....early in the morning. Thanks for the memories. It was nice to see park themes that represented where I lived.

I vividly remember the Indian village and seeing the shows and being afraid to touch the Buffalo/Bison. I love nostalgia, especially Disneyland nostalgia. Thank you so much for putting it together….I know that it took a long time and many rewrites.

Good job Justin, brought back so many memories.
One memory is only lasting 30 mins in the park before getting thrown out. Something to do with liquids falling from baskets.
The biggest souvenir there to impress the kids in the neighborhood was those huge rope suckers.

i loved the native indian dance area. the 60s and 70s were the time i lived close to the park and we went all the time, and could watch the fireworks from our backyard. at disney, it was the only time our fractured family got along. makes me cry to think about now - my sister and i getting our silhouettes done or riding journey into inner space with my dad.

So many memories this brought back. Thank you. I am going to see if you have done the Golden Horseshoe history. My favorite childhood memories my Father insisted we go there every time. I vaguely remember the Indian Village but I do remember the dancers. It was a very colorful area. I was only 10 when it was removed. I have better memories of the Tahitian Terrace since it was my grandfathers favorite restaurant, and if he was with us, we were eating there. The dancers also pulled him up on stage (along with other embarrassed dads) to participate in Hula lessons. I'll be honest, my grandfather loved the attention and he was a bit of a ham.

All this happened before I was even born and I think it's pretty neat learning all the Disneyland history. I've never been to Disneyland but I have been to Disney World. The place I've been to that has all the Native American history is Wisconsin Dells. They used to have the Native American dances. There was a theme park called Fort Dells which I think was an inspiration to Frontier Land in Disneyland. They were around all the way up until 1985. The very first time I've been to Disney World was in the Spring of 1993. I went back with my family in December of 1997. It was after we celebrated Christmas so we drove out to Disney World in the evening of Christmas. And came back in 2003. I love what you've done with the two videos I've watched. Keep it up.

Thank You for sharing the history of Disneyland's Indian Village. It amazes me how much Walt cared about trying to tell the true story of Native America. I wish this part of the park still existed. People nowadays need to learn the true history of Native America and not the lies that Hollywood and the American school system has perpetuated for years. The only place the true history of Native America is told is in a hand full of museums around the country and this is done with static displays. It is more impactful when this type of history is told by living people of the culture who are demonstrating how they traditionally lived. We can not appreciate and help preserve what we do not understand.
