  • The Italian Air Force is often credited with being far inferior in numbers and overall flight performance to the Allies. However, in 1943, they managed to put into service three excellent and modern fighters. These were the Fiat G.55, Macchi C.205, and the Reggiane Re.2005. However, these were introduced too late and in too few numbers to have any meaningful effect on the overall situation for the Italians. This was especially the case with the Re.2005, nicknamed Sagittario (Archer), which showed promising performance but less than 50 were built by the time of the Italian Armistice.

    I had the pleasure here in Italy some years ago to talk to a few of the pilots from the 22nd Gruppo. They had a few Re.2005 on hand. Each I spoke with did not fly it in combat but, just training flights around the airfield. They all told me that the 2005 was simply a beast and was a pure joy to fly. They would take turns every other day with one pilot getting a test hop around the airfield. They also told me that things would have been different if they 5 Series would have arrived earlier in the war. And I agreed with them.

      It looks like it had a Spitfires wings, The Mk 9 Spitfire squadrons on Malta did loose a number of aircraft to the Sagittario it really was a pilots airplane.

      @@englishpassport6590I actually am looking into those engagements, it seems that the Brit’s lost a Spit 9 to Capitano Giulio Torresi, while loosing two Re.2005s. Torresi would claim another spit as a probable, or at least damaged. Spits would also damaged 2 Re-2005s and the rest of them were unfortunately bombed and stranded on the ground. Would’ve been nice if one survived today

    One can only imagine how lethal this fighter would be with a late war DB series engine... Anyway, this is in my opinion, the most beautiful fighter of the war, if only looks could kill.

    If italians would had just focused on their first modern monoplane Macchi c.202 and c.205, things would've turned better for them.
    The policy of making every Italian business men in aviation sector happy because of their political connections & fundings doomed the whole war progress.

    REGIA AERONAUTICA:The Italian Air Force had in 1940: 1300 medium bomber ,1160 fighter aircaftt, 500 recoinassence aircraft .It had very good warfighters like Macchi 202 and Macchi 205,Fiat G 55 and the Reggiane RE 2005 (maybe the most beautiful airplane of the WW2) .Italy built from (1940 to 1943) 11508 airplanes(always less in comparison with the othern nations). Only the fourth squadron destroyed 585 airplanes plus 215 probably .The SM 79 was an amazing medium bomber ,very effcient as torpedo bomber ,infact sinked a lot of military ships (Fearless ,Bedouin ,Nestor ,Foresight,Pozarica ecc).The sum of the official ranking of the(only) flying aces is of 1225 shooting down aircrafts.(The highest is Franco Lucchini with 26).

    All three types with DB.605 (Fiat G.55, Macchi C.205, Reggiane Re.2005) were excellent fighters, simply in par with the late war Allied fighters. As the history shows, they were too few, too late... for the fortune of the Allied pilots.

    The Fiat G.56 with the DB 603 was an even greater jump forward. Maximum speed of 440 MPH, with excellent handling and agility at all altitudes. It was so good the Luftwaffe forbade its manufacture by the Social Republic. It could have been a game-changer for the Germans but Goring wouldn't sign off on it as a frontline fighter because it wasn't German, as well as the man-hours needed, though it could be reduced to 9000 man hours from 15000. Stupid decision, by March 1944 the Germans had the industrial capacity to build them in large numbers. It is thought he preferred the Ta-152 which had similar speed but was far less agile, and was plagued with problems which prevented its mass production. One wonders what damage could have been done had the Luftwaffe produced 5000 G.56s.

      I think it wasnt because the G.56 was not a german design, producing a new fighterdesign would interupt the Fighter Production , this is also the reason why they produced the (outclassed) 109 until the end

      I forgot on what website (ww2aircraft, secretprojects, axishistory etc) I've read the transcript of a meeting with Goring in 1943 following the tests of the Italian aircrafts but what I remember of the content is that he very impressed and hoped they could start helping them mass produce the G.55 and G.56. He praised the Italians as great aircraft designers but struggling to produce said masterpieces in numbers.
      The whole reason this went nowhere was the collapse of Italy and the time it would take to set up new production lines solely my themselves. The G.55 would take 15000 hours to build while a Bf 109, 5000. And as for the Ta 152 comparison, the Ta 152 was a compromise aircraft, using as many common parts with the FW 190D, as the RLM could not afford to build the more different Ta 153 that Tank favored.

    Italian industrial power was not at the level of the one of Allied countries. Beautiful projects but no organized production, and outnumbered by its enemies forces.
    I would suggest also the Macchi 202 Folgore and 205 Veltro and Fiat G 55 for some videos of Yours to come.

    This aircraft was at least the equal of the P51 when it first appeared. The Italian government was unable to make up its mind at first, because the other two options had fewer teething problems. Development time was lost trying to fix the problems with the landing gear and the vibration of the fuselage. They never had the time to mass produce their new designs before the Allied Invasion of Sicily.

    The Reggiane have an extraordinary history: they built aircraft from 1936 to 1943. In 7 years, starting from scratch, they came to produce the Re.2005, which, with some refinements, could have been the best fighter of the time.

    Hi! Very cool video, learned a lot as i don't know much about Reggiane fighters. However, please stop using this camera shake effect on photos. A fixed image or a very slight side slide effect is much preferred IMHO. Thanks !

    I am guessing that was a 1200 horsepower A38 engine although 12200 would be something to marvel at, probably why they were attaching contra rotating props like the 15000shp Klimov engines from the TU95.

    I can only add that the 580 lt capability is wrong, they had about 536 lt (2x160 + 2x108 l, all in the wings). And despite the provisions, no Re.2005 was ever fitted with external tanks.

    This is a bit off-topic, but why did Italian aircraft manufacturers Fiat, Macchi and Reggiane have such similar external designs? For example: Fiat G.55, Macchi C.205, and the Reggiane Re.2005.

    Re2005 is a beautiful aircraft that was just too late. Supposedly, there was an effort to sell aome to Sweden, who already operated the Re2000 with engines supplied by Germany but the Germana rwfused to supply them.

      After watching a video about how crappy the Hawker Typhoon was, with one of the reasons being given that it lacked rearward visibility due to the back half of the canopy being metal, it's surprising that all three of these planes are considered to be "good" despite having the same problem. It would have been relatively easy to fix if the Italians weren't already beaten and forced to surrender. The P-47 and P-51 initially had the same flaw and were both fixed without too much trouble.

      I did misspeak "1,200" as "12,200," and I'm kicking myself for not catching that error. In the original recording, however, there was a more prominent concern that perhaps distracted our quality control. Namely, the original script mistakenly had the pronunciation guide in Serbian instead of Italian.

    Twelve thousand two hundred horsepower? When I hear something so obviously inaccurate ( impossible) in the first moments of a vid, it calls into question the validity of everything that follows, rendering it a waste of time. But that's just me. Enjoy.

    Fiat has made some of the WORST engines in history! Look at what they've done to the Jeep and Chrysler name in the States here. Garbage, garbage, garbadge.... The Yugo engine. Didn't last for 50,000 miles before needed a complete overhaul! Now the Navy is buying Italian Corvette boats.. OMG what is the U.S. Navy thinking!

      Quit crying. That's because you can afford only rubbish cars. Low budget and you get what you get. Alfa romeo is very reliable and elegant, Fiat is sturdy and cheap. Lancia,Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati,Zonda. Work harder mate and get yourself a proper set of wheels.
