Though I'm fully into the 80's era, I had Grace Under Pressure way down at rank 15, because I think side B isn't nearly as incredible as side A, which is basicly perfect. I value the consistency of the rest of the records more. 6. A Farewell to Kings 5. Signals 4. Moving Pictures 3. Hemispheres 2. Permanent Waves 1. 2112 Fantastic conclusion to the Rush ranking. I must say though, you saying there wasn't any other band with such a consistent discography, immediately reminded me of one of my favourite bands ever, Blue Oyster Cult. After 53 years of being active musicians, they released their latest album in 2020, and they're rocking as hard as ever. That's the most outstanding catalogue I know. I hope one day, we'll get to a point where you guys rank BOC too.
Guys thank you again so much for Rush! I'm going to go back and listen to so many classic albums again, and listen to the ones I didn't listen too enough yet! What an amazing band! Peanut Butter Platypus! I'm sooooooooo looking forward to PUBLIC ENEMY! Fantastic choices Dudes! I'm just gonna buy myself a cup for the next show! 🖤🥳
6 - Farewell to Kings - An improvement over 2012, not one less than awesome moment. 5 - Signals - The whole album is high energy, greatness, everyone is playing their asses off, but it's going this high on my list just for Subdivisions. I used to think it was corny, but it just grew on me from lowest to highest tier Rush - that's why I've been going back and listening to everything again. If the lyrics are corny - that only matches the awful experience of growing up in modern North American society. It's awful, it's corny, it can feel hopeless and frustrating and the eerie synths, plus the awesome video with it's opening areal shots matched the mood perfectly. Everyone needs to watch that video, it's one of the best ever made. No contrived story line, nothing really happens, it just perfectly captures the feeling and nothing resolves. They kept it real. 4 - Snakes and Arrows - I have no idea why no one ever gives any love to this one. Excellent bass all over the place. The only track I didn't like was the single "working them angels." 2007 was also just a fun time to be a Rush fan. They were putting all kinds of concerts, videos, Southpark cartoon, showing up in movies, and random shit like them eating dinner online, them playing Rush on rockband "we don't even look like the original guys." Malignant Narcissism - perfection. 3 - Hemispheres - I agree that it's the height of 70s, long song, prog rock Rush. The only song I don't like is "The Trees." It's a little too Dr. Seuss for me. But the rest of the album - the high points are higher than Farewell (or almost every other album) so it still ranks higher. What's with all the naked dudes on 70s prog rock albums? I think Yes did it first. 2 - Roll the Bones - yOu cANt liKe tHaT aLbuM iT hAS a RApPiNg sKelEton - This is my kind of concept album. Not trying to force everything into the restrictive structure of literary fiction - it just has repeating themes and a feeling. Short, catchy, poppy (yet proggy...I believe that every Rush album is prog in some way), smart songs about the randomness of life and reality - repeated themes of gambling, chance, and circumstance all throughout. It starts out with the adventurous optimism of youth in "dreamline" and then sends you out into space like a pinball. It will always be an all time personal favorite of mine out of any meaningful art ever. It reflects my own vision of the universe as completely random and the only meaning is that which you create in your imagination. It's harshly realistic, demystifies everything, but it leaves you with your best chance of hope and happiness - you are just left with - alright, fuck it - because we’re here - roll the bones. It doesn't sound like any other Rush album, or any other album. It's farther away from the trends of it’s time than anything else they’ve done. It was the first Rush album I bought and heard, and at that time no one else I knew was into Rush and no one was talking about that album at the time. All of that, is why it’s so special to me personally. I would have thought that most Rush fans had the kind of sense of humor where they would have loved the rapping skeleton in Roll the Bones…if only they had payed attention to everything they have done ever. Kimonos - refrigerators - catch the fish ! 1 - Moving Pictures - just absolute perfection. To me, this is the ultimate prog album. Modern Maiden isn’t prog - it’s just long. These songs punch right to the point and all of the complexity and deepness is right there, tightly packed inside ultra catchy songs. This isn’t new wave or pop, this is prog rock with keyboards. This is one of those rare instances where a band’s most popular album and song happens to be my favorite. I will never get tired of Tom Sawyer - it is everything great about Rush all in one song. Red Barchetta is their best sentimental song. YYZ is their best instrumental. Limelight - their best pop song. Over the years, I’ve grown to love the B side way more. You are right about Camera Eye sounding like something from the past trying to sound like the future, and I love that. Witch Hunt is creepy yet elevating. Vital signs closes with their most progy version of the Rush/Police sound. This has to be in my top 10 all time albums.
6. Clockwork Angels (ended career where they started with Fly By Night as a Prog Metal band) 5. Roll The Bones 4. Moving Pictures 3. Grace Under Pressure (invented new Sub-Genre Heavy Prog Wave) 2. A Farewell To Kings 1. Permanent Waves (Freewill is a🤘Prog Metal Anthem)
6) Grace Under Pressure 5) Hemispheres 4) Farewell to Kings 3) Permanent Waves 2) 2112 1) Moving Pictures Really tough list. Clockwork Angels was the album I rediscovered my love Rush again after ignoring them for like two decades. Great band no doubt.
Got this cued up on my tv, coffee brewing, and I had a weird premonition of either you or Eddie starting the show singing along to Salt N Peppa with these lyrics : "Let's talk about Rush, baby Let's talk about Geddy Lee Let's talk about Rush." Now, I know you probably aren't going to start the show that way, but I'm still gonna love it.
Then, halfway into the show, I'm thinking - Tom Hanks? Those fuckers managed to take it somewhere even goofier than Salt n Peppa Rush. I lol'ed. You never disappoint. Always something new and unexpected, like every great Rush album.
Your explanation of side B of 2012 blew my mind - no joke - I had never heard that before. I'm also definitely going to give clockwork angels another chance. As I remember it, I didn't like the production and/or vocals as much as Snakes and Arrows, but I think it's safe to say that every Rush album gets better with multiple listens. Great show.
Thanks ever so much for your worst to best appraisal. We'll there isn't a worst they are all excellent. I am 57 and my first album bought was 2112. Whenever a release was made it was an event for me. Your task was impossible from a group that only comes once in a lifetime . Your enthusiasm shined through and thoroughly enjoyed it.you were right to do 3 episodes rush warranted it. I always accepted all albums on merit and grateful for everyone . If I ever met the group I would say how much pleasure they had given to me . If I had to pick an album it would be hemispheres as I feel the group were at there technical peak. However I still get a tingle when axanadu is played and that from 1977 its sublime. Its lovely to hear a different perspective on a rush discography. Thanks guys it keeps me young. Ps love to hear your thoughts on jethro tull. But appreciate the time and work involved in what you do . Tim uk .

Probably at least 90% of Rush fans would have anything from 2012 through Moving pictures as their number 1. Those are all good answers. Think about that - that would be albums # 4 through # 8. How many other bands would have that result? Maybe Judas Priest - that's about it. The vast majority of bands, most people would rightfully rank albums # 1, 2 or 3 as the best and then a big downward slide. That's proof that Rush were progressive in the true sense of the word.
