A suggestion for making hills which I have done for years. Use bubble wrap to make the hill and hold in place with tape. Then cover with plaster cloth, when the plaster cloth has dried, then paint and use something like scatter. Then remove the bubble wrap as the plaster cloth does not stick to it,it makes a super light hill.

You are an inspiration to anyone starting out in this wonderful hobby who can only afford to do it on a budget. Cheers Greg

Ran into this helpful gentleman (the owner of the channel) in a model railway shop today and he gave me some great advice that ended up saving me some money. Thanks (didn't catch your name), you've gained a subscriber) 👍🏾

Yeah that is a smart way to build a hill on a budget 💡 Like you say, if it’s only going to have a few card structures on it, you’re not going to to need it to be overly sturdy, so why add weight? 🤷🏻‍♂️
One thing I was going to suggest if I may: incorporate a handle into the top and use a removable structure with no windows like an old barn or something to cover it in situ. It should make removal really easy and simple to cover up 😎
Have a great weekend mate 🍀👍🍻

I was just going to use a building but I like the idea of using it to hide a proper handle thanks

That removal hill idea is a great idea.
I am always steering people who are new to the hobby and want a cost effective way of modelling to the channel as they always tend to be the ones who see all of the newer costly models being advertised by other channels and get disheartened that they will not be able to afford to have a model railway. I always tell them you don't always require new models or expensive new models to enjoy the hobby and sometimes there isn't actually anything wrong with the older Lima and Hornby models if you just want to play trains all day.

I do like and admire your three layouts in one. I seem to remember there's a fourth lurking in there somewhere. I wish I had the space (and the energy) to do something like it.

    Nice work.
    Its coming together well. 👍
Can you please add a bit to one of your videos on how you glue your track mat down under the tracks so that you don't end up with glue ripples?
    Thank you.

Thanks, I just use PVA thinly spread. If you screw the track down straight away then bubbles can't form

Great update! Nice hill construction 👍 I use XPS covered with layers of paper, but the way you make them is definitely a good alternative and probably more environment friendly!

Coming along nicely. The main hill on my layout doesn't lift off but it's almost entirely that sort of cardboard underneath. Great recycling

Ideal to save all packaging materials, shoe boxes can be reversed and painted and placed in different positions...corregated cardboard is a must...

Looking good. I am sure once completed all 3 layouts will look amazing with different trains running on them.. Different locomotives every time you make a video will give it realistic view.

People have been using scatter since Faller and other companies started selling it. IMO it's a bit better for the money than static grass after all if you want standing grass you can use brush bristles.

Hi Mike it looks great it really does well done :) I started making a hill last week, but as it's in a hard to reach place i had to use a paper template first, then transfer that to a cardboard base.I then put random uprights on the cardboard and stuff those with newspaper. Then i do exactly the same method as you. Some of my favourite parts of my scenery are just scatter, and the only static grass was applied using the shaken bottle method.

      @BudgetModelRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I used a template as well to make the top. I had forgotten about the bottle method, I may try that out in places

Good build, a solid and light hill, should be well useful in the event of a derailment underneath😀

Another source of hill material is XPS foam. Which is also available from construction site rubbish containers if you are lucky

Promising works ! Just one question : did you planned some support walls on the side of the entrance of your trench, below the girder bridge ? That would be nice in the landscape.

    • @BudgetModelRailways

Yes there will be retaining walls once the grass is done

You know static grass is probably the worst modelling invention of the last century, it’s usually completely out of scale, resembles no ‘grass’ I know and is constantly over used. Use the scatter stuff it always does the business.
