  • in this video, we take a deep dive into testing the Crown XLS 2000 amplifier to see if it truly delivers the power it promises. Using the SMD AMM-1, we'll put the XLS 2000 through its paces on resistive loads to determine if it meets its rated power output.
For this test, we're focusing exclusively on 4 ohm bridged mode, which is equivalent to running 2 ohms per channel.
This setup still allows us to accurately measure the amp's performance and power capabilities.
Whether you're considering this amp for your setup or just curious about how well it performs, join us for a detailed breakdown of its capabilities, efficiency, and real-world performance.

How many amps is that circuit breaker above the IEC inlet rated for? A power requirement of 350W is clearly designated between that breaker and the IEC. So, physics being somewhat rigid it would be impossible to continuously output more than 350W with only 350 drawn from the mains. But it might give bursts of very high output. I remember Crown from way back when they built very high powered class AB amps and they certainly met their ratings. I'm baffled by the 350W power input designation. Cool video.

The IHF standard typically tests an amplifier’s power output, thermal behavior, and distortion while running at 1/4 of its rated power. For example, if an amplifier is rated to deliver 1000 watts at full output, under the IHF standard, the testing would involve operating it at 250 watts continuously.
the reason why it says 350w at the back is because that how much power it will consume on low power levels (IHS standard)

In practical terms, turning this knob controls how much of the amplified signal is sent to the speaker connected to this channel, effectively acting as a “volume” knob for the channel. While it impacts the perceived loudness, it is not a “gain” control in the pre-amplification sense but more about adjusting the level of power delivered by the amplifier.
The key difference is that the gain control adjusts the input signal level before amplification, whereas this knob is part of the final output stage, controlling how much power goes to the speakers. Thus, it’s primarily for managing volume rather than fine-tuning the input gain.

@@analoghardwaretops3976 Testing amplifiers on resistive loads can provide very reliable information because resistors offer a stable, predictable load. Unlike real speakers, which can vary a lot in how they behave, resistors keep things simple and consistent. This makes it easier to measure important performance factors like power output, distortion, and heat management accurately. By using a resistive load first, you can get a clear picture of how well an amplifier works without the complications that real speakers introduce, making it easier to spot any strengths or weaknesses before moving on to more complex tests.
