      Wow! That must have been amazing! Luckily I'll be seeing Opeth live in June 30th. For the second time. First time was at this small club (Helitehas) in Tallinn, Estonia in 2022. First concert after the lockdowns and with the new drummer. It was AMAZING. There are still some bits of that concert on TH-cam.

    I was actually gonna recommend an Opeth song, the studio version of “Deliverance”. To me it’s a major metal tune guaranteed to not disappoint. As you picked up on, their songwriting is top-notch, not simple stuff at all. These guys are real pros. I have to admire very technical musicianship because it’s an elite level of playing. This band truly excels.

    Thank you, David. Opeth's fan here. Hopefully more Opeth melodic songs will be requested (post Blackwater Park album) 🤘

    My favorite band of all time actually. Even though I got into them through the extreme metal albums like Blackwater Park (probably my favorite) even their switch to prog rock is full of gems. A Fleeting Glance from Sorceress for example... yessssss

    Thanks, David. We all know you're probably the most honest reactor on youtube. It's always nice to hear your professional opinion. It happens that I'm an Opeth fan but sometimes I think they could cut a couple of bars from their songs btw :-) However I absolutely love their dark melancholic tone and Michael's voice.

    I have some thoughts to add to yours. I was there at Red Rocks for this show and it was actually very cold and windy. Red Rocks is a magnificent venue but it's not very user friendly. There is only one restroom at the very top of the plateau inside the only building on the premises. There are like a hundred different levels you can get to and sit down, but they are all huge wooden bleachers. The air is very light and atmospheric and you can loose your breath very easily. Opeth was the headliner but the first band was Devin Townsend, next was Gojira. It was epic and Opeth had HD cameras on wires floating above the crowd. I saw King Diamond perform there in 2015 on the Mayhem tour, and his vocals and sound reverberated among the huge rocks around the stage. He came out on a levitating platform which had a huge lighted pentagram. It was awesome. Slayer was the headliner of that show and there was so much legal pot smoke that Tom Araya got a contact high lol!! \,,/

    Good review! I have to say though, that I have seen several review channels that always seem to take Ghost of Perdition as their first Opeth song to check out. I frankly feel that this isn't a great idea, since it can be a bit too harsh of a tune to get people interested in hearing more of their music. In your case though, it's clear that you have enough musical experience for it not to be a problem. Just remember that Opeth is a very, very versatile band. Their songs range from very heavy to very light, with many songs displaying elements of both like this one does. Additionally, they meander into many different sounds and genres and do it expertly. It won't take any new Opeth listener long to figure out why they have such a massive, dedicated following.

    Opeth has had a massive impact on the way a lot of metal bands write. "Orchid" has been a crucial album in metal history. Great review! Their track "Black Rose Immortal" --though not as refined as their 2000s work has among the best melodies you'll likely ever hear.

    I'm a fan of Opeth ( at 54). From the beginning , I find many, many of their tunes to be growers. For days after , parts or themes will keep resonating in your head.
    I'm a bassist as well. Martin is solid , not flashy , but tasteful. He even uses a capo at times. Opeth ALWAYS uses interesting chords , and phrases. Nice reaction.

  • @anumili08
    @anumili08 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Love your reaction. I hope you listen to Studio version as well, before giving your final review. Now Opeth being ridiculously talented, they can sometimes sound even better live but studio version can give that extra bit on the production. Also, Mikael's growls had deteriorated a great deal by the time this was recorded. He still sounds good but younger Mikael sounded like the devil himself (and an angel when he is clean singing)
    Next songs to react to may be Deliverance (Studio or live at Shepherds bush) or Blackwater Park (this has to be a studio version as that's their Magnum opus probably and none of the live versions sound as good)

    Great reaction. Opeth has evolved from a much heavier death metal sound with growls in there earlier years to now more of a progressive metal/ rock sound currently. I am personally a fan of both styles.

    Great song! I have heard them before so it's what I expected. Very technical, Rush esk hence the drumming. Gotta admit I didn't get bored but some parts went a little Ling but they did find good ways in and out of those parts, so long but it didn't drag. Good harmonies and the clean voice that growled but I'm with you, I personally like the clean voice more, especially when you have that nice of a voice. Great live performance also.

    Trying to learn this song on guitar made me a better musician. I don't mean learn the whole song either, just parts of it (so far). It's been one of my favourite songs since first hearing it shortly after the album released.

    I may be wrong, but I believe it's at most times best to first hear the studio recording. Live just doesn't give you the clearest picture always.

    Opeth is my 2nd favourite band, (next to Black Sabbath). They just have that (my preferred) balance of technicality and 'feels'. Mikael's note choices, especially in creating his solos is very unique to my ear.

  • @Elis_Nordgall
    @Elis_Nordgall 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’d say that’s a fair score, it’s not my favourite song by them or anything, I just felt like it’s a good introduction song to Opeth, and it’s not 15 minutes+, lol.
    It has both gritty stuff and more melodic stuff, so it’s great for an introduction, imo, since their newer stuff is a lot softer while their older stuff is a lot heavier, with a few exceptions, of course.
    I’d personally give it like an 8.5 or something like that, but then increase it a little since they’re from my home country, so I’m biased, so a 9.2, bit then bump it down a bit because they’re from Stockholm, so final score… 8.2!

    Liked your review and respect the grade, not being a musician, as much as a fan of all music. Please do yourself and fans a favor and listen to Harlequin/ on this album or go back into the catalogue a bit further (Blackwater Park/Still Life/Deliverance). I love all Opeth years, but am a huge Martin Lopez fan and his (jazz-ish?) drumming is some of the most tasteful in metal that I've ever heard.

    God why does everybody do this shit redrocks version. Roundhouse tapes is a muuuch better performance. His growls are so bad here. Great band and reaction none the less.

      @alexandremarchand8815 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The growls are indeed better in the Roundhouse Tapes versions, he was quite a few years younger haha so it is normal. But in my opinion, all the other elements are sounding better in the red rocks version. The production for a live recording is stellar on that one.

  • @circulation69
    @circulation69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey David, great and honest reaction as always, but I do think you should stop pre-judging tracks just because they're 10 minutes long! Us musicians/songwriters from the Progressive end of the spectrum are not writing 4 minute pop songs to satisfy greasy American radio executives, we're writing music to please a Progressive audience that has paid to hear us write interesting non time restricted art, not bland pop. I think most Opeth fans would agree that their historically best tracks are all around the 8 to 13 minute mark. Now if a track is boring as **** then it's boring, doesn't matter if it's 3 or 13 minutes, I totally agree with you on that, but it's the one thing I find annoying is you pre-judge a track that's longer than say 8 minutes. How about not pre-judging stuff until you've actually heard it, whatever the length of the piece of art the composers' put his heart and soul in to. I've watched your reaction to Nightwish's Ghost Love Score, a track that's over 10 minutes and it achieved (at the time) the highest score on your channel.... I rest my case :) Keep up the great work David :)

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not really pre-judging, I'm pre-framing the viewers and letting them know that I am a little tougher on longer videos. Like I've always said though, if the the song is amazing and entertaining, then it's going to do well and it has nothing to worry about. If I get bored, or the song is bad, then it's gonna get hammered by me. I just try to pre-frame the viewers so they understand the score when I give it and help them understand my reasonings for the score, that's all. Great question though, I don't think anyone has ever asked me about that.

    • @circulation69
      @circulation69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@THEDavidHeretic thanks for the reply David. I fully appreciate your thoughts. Funnily enough I was talking earlier to a bass player (who's English like myself), he's a former member of a band I know you would have heard of, and he's now living and working in California. We both came to..... well maybe not a conclusion but a thought that maybe it's a European / American divide. Prog, Power and Symphonic Metal genres are huge in Europe but less so in America (maybe?). I think maybe European audiences are possibly more open to longer material. It was an interesting conversation anyway. Keep up the great work sir....
      PS, I'm fully aware that Tool and Dream Theatre kind of dent that argument but I'm struggling to think of any other recent American bands that regularly do 10+ minute songs.
