Ok guys, you can laugh, but just a lil' facts.
3 april 1940 lonely "Sunderland" fight with 6 (six) Ju.88C same time, while flying from Norway to UK. "Sunderland" successfully landing on home base, two of Ju.88 are not.
2 june 1943 lonely "Sunderland" flight over Bay of Biscay with rescue mission, try to search and escape pilots and passangers DС-3 of BOAC Company which was shot down that area. 8 (eight!) Ju.88 attacked our fat hero. At the end of fight "Sunderland" was like a colander, one gunner was KIA, most of other Sunderland's crew was injured. Nevertheless "Sunderland" come back to base, but 3 (three!) Ju.88 are not.
28 december 1943 "Sunderland" shot down Fw.200 over Atlantic.
Thank you for providing that excellent summary of Sunderland combat with Luftwaffe heavies :)
You nearly got it right. 8 JU88s attacked the Flying Porcupine, 3 were shot down and another 3 damaged. Two Short Sunderlands in "box formation" (diagonally opposite on a square) was near invincible.
The Sunderland that fought off those 8 JU88's went missing 3 weeks later, never to be seen again ,,,
"Alright crew- brace for impact. Oh and Nose Gunner- it'd probably be best for everyone if you didn't survive this one..."
lol
I really wish that 1c would make all of those non-flyable planes flyable. I'd really enjoy doing a rescue mission or an anti-sub mission with these craft. Also training and liason missions with planes like the Anson.
A flying fishing boat vs Lufthansa.
Pretty much :)
seen a sunderland in real life in a museum. Very impressive aircraft, hard to picture it flying as its hench.
That was like some real Top Gun maneuvering action!
I remember building a Sunderland Airfix model when I was a kid. On the box picture it was actually shooting at a Condor, haha!
Way cool :)
Now that was great art work, I would love have a wall poster of.
Come Airfix
Brit pilot: "Nose gunner please stop shooting you're just pissing him off."
German pilot: "Tail gunner please stop shooting you're just pissing him off."
Unfortunately I couldnt fire the guns, those planes are AI. In a real conflict, once the shooting stated, I reckon it would be finished in about 7 seconds. Thank you for watching :)
bro itsnot brit its french
@@whatudoingbro6618 what's French??
A Slumberland & a Condom armed w/ peashooters playing "Blackflies" Woooo!!
lol
"Herr commandant, there's a Sunderland flying boat trailing us!" "Discourage him, Hans." "Jawohl, he's shooting at us too!" ""Cecil, have you got that Condor's number yet?" "We're both doing the wood pecker on each other, sir." "Ground control from Dumbo six, we are in pursuit of a commerce bomber on a due South course." "Dumbo six, do you need assistance?" "Ground control, we may need rescue, that bounder's going down...but so are we." "Flying officer Reynolds, rather than end up in the channel again, report the bandit to sector command and have them vector in fighters. If you keep pranging Sunderlands, the next thing you'll fly will be a Air Sea Rescue Walrus!"
You need to get out more
a battle like this did take place off the coast of ireland,up around the donegal coast.both of the aircraft tore lumps out of each other, but neither was shot down. the radio operator, or navigator on the german craft was killed, with a bullet to the head.i assume there was probably others wounded on both crafts....
I was inspired to make this vid, because of that battle. I read about it ages ago, and more recently I google searched it, and couldnt find much, but I did discover a battle between a RAF Sunderland and a number of Ju88s, out over the ocean, somewhere near Norway. Somehow the Sunderland survived. In any case, I really like the concept of two heavies throwing broadsides, like olden days sailing ships :)
i read about the battle in a book titled," ship wrecks around donegal," or" ship wrecks around ireland", although i think it was donegal.it covered a lot about the u.boats, hence it covered a bit about air activity attacking ships and u.boats...i think they both ran out of ammo,so ended their attack. if you goggle the name of the book, you will probably be able to read it on line,or at least said article...
Yeh, it makes sense because both Condor and Sunderland had the range to fly way out into the ocean and back, and as such were more likely to meet compared to other aircraft that were coast bound due to range constraints. Condor would have made a great airliner too -m Heck I would have flown as a passenger on that graceful plane.
Froggy Frog 9000 the Sunderland to the Germans became known as 'The Porcupine' after this encounter, as it badly damaged 3 '88's and was still able to fly home.
It's an apt nickname, a very prickly defender..
Condor Speed ca 400 Km/h ! Short Sunderland Speed ca 340 Km/h !
This looks like a goddamn pirate ship battle
You got it :) That's exactly what I was inspired by to make this vid.
The FW-200 "Condor" was much better armed defensively than most german bombers of that time. The Condor had an Achillies Heel, and a big one. It was a converted airliner and not really stressed for the slam-bang of air combat. It was possible to break a Condor's back with a hard landing. When Capt. Eric Brown and another pilot engaged a Condor while flying from an escort carrier in Grumman Martlets, mindful of the Condor's armament, they attacked head-on. Brown and his wingman were astonished to see the big German airplane go into a tight turn and breaking off the aft fuselage and tail section.
+Joseph Volpendesta I have a photo of a Condor that broke its back on landing and is lying rather bent on the runway. I added the comment "It's that Condor moment" from a popular advert and showed the finished item to a few colleagues at work. One of them took exception to the Swastika on the tail so I asked him what did he expect to see on the fin of a German aircraft in the period 1933-45. There is another photo I saw once where the rear spar of a Condor failed on landing and the trailing edge of the wing trailed on the ground.
Terry, I think that I remember seeing that photo of the broken-back Condor. And that was merely a hard landing!
Would have been astonishing seeing that tail break off. Thanks for watching and please have a look at my other vids :)
Wow those photos sound great, Id like to see them, you could make a youtube vid of them with music.
+Froggy Frog 9000 If you acess www.google.nl/search?q=Fw200+Condor+broken&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwim3YW-9t3XAhVBAsAKHeTeAfQQ7AkIMw&biw=1350&bih=618 the first photo should be the broken fuselage Condor. The other I saw years ago but didn't save.
This was a laugh riot, like geriatric uncles fighting at the family barbecue. And the Wagner was perfect.
cheers man, exactly
This seems unrealistic given that the maximum speeds for both aircraft differed by more than 150 mph. There's little chance that a Sunderland could ever catch up to, or fly along side, of an FW 200 (even battle damaged). Loved the graphics though! This was fun to watch!
Cheers, please watch my best vid in the link.
I'm calling fantasy to the Sunderland climbing AND overtaking Condor. Since krauts had been fighting this a/c, the only way this happens is they throttled WAY back, super lean, on autopilot, and then all went to sleep. Just sayin'. :)
yeh they are both ai planes so its like they do their own thing sometimes
Condor should just made its way behind the Sunderland. Then just blow the anti-shipping 20 mm cannon. And don’t forget about ,,Omaewa Mou Shindeiru”.
there was a battle between a Lancaster and a Bv 222 flying boat the Bv 222.s cannon overwhelmed the british bomber
It was actually a PB4Y Liberator which occurred October 22 1943.
One of my favorite planes the Short Sunderland MKI,very real camuflage!!!!...nice done!!!
Oh yes and Short was a great aircraft company - they surprised everyone with how good their aircraft were.
Ye indeed Sir!!!!
The Sunderland actually had 4 303's fixed in the nose I think so she could lay down fire directly ahead with 6 guns. So this video should have been much shorter.
Feather the bloody props!! You could have glided far closer to land without windmilling dead engines. Next time against a FW200, cross his T early and let your whole broadside rake him. Note: Naval terminology and tactics. The Sunderland is a flying boat. And that 4 gun tail turret was a bit of a shredder at close-ish range
These are AI aircraft.
Did the Sunderland land on the water because it was damaged too much to fly? Would a Sunderland with a dead engine be able to land (in those perfect conditions) to pick up the Germans? I really enjoy your videos. Usually I dislike music when added, but this was perfect.
Both planes in this vid were Ai, and I think the Sunderland put down when it was unable to fly further, from engine damage or fuel starvation. A Sunderland could land with no engines working or with one engine working, but the question is, would it be able to take off again with one engine out, and extra weight if it picked up survivors. If it was me Id put down near the Kondor, retrieve the survivors and if I couldnt takeoff Id just wait for the Royal Navy to arrive. lol. Cheers :)
God Damn It, you shot my Capri Sun !!
Oh drat and blast :)
I wanted to see if the bullet holes would mean it would sink or if they managed to plug them. Where are the kamikaze swordfish by the way?
TommyTwobats prolly won’t sink, ain’t no swordfish in cliffs of Dover
LOVE THE SUNDERLAND FLYING BOAT ...SOME WERE BASED IN PLYMOUTH DEVON 🇬🇧 THAT WAS THE R.A.A.F. 230 SQD AT MOUNT BATTEN.... THE SUNDERLANDS WERE QUITE HEAVRLY ARMED ..esp....THE MK 3 WITH 4× FIXED FWARD FIRING ( .303"S )7.7MM BROWNING'S AND 4 MORE IN THE TAIL PLUS 2---- OR ---4 IN THE UPPER TURRET PLUS SIDE FIRING (.50 ) 12.7 MM BROWNING'S (×2) & A FEW VICKERS VGO"S PLUS DEPTH CHARGES, BOMBS, ect ect AND THE CONDOR WITH A MIX OF 20MM MG151/20"S & 13.2 MM MG 131/13"S AND THE OLD 7.9 MM MG15"S ALSO WITH 4 × 550LB BOMBS 💣💥....SO I RECKON THAT THE CONDOR JUST HAD A BIT MORE FIRE POWER BECAUSE OF THE HE / HEI ROUNDS OF THE 20MM & THE 13 MM BUT..??? IN THE WEIGHT OF FIRE I'D GIVE IT TO THE SUNDERLAND ...DUE TO THE FASTER FIRING BROWNING'S AND VICKERS VGO"S BOTH AROUND 1,000 RPM ANYHOOS WORLD 😁 MORE USELESS INFORMATION FOR YOU 😁🤬🇬🇧 ( 230 SQD LEFT MT BATTEN IN 1941 AND REPLACED BY 487 R.A.A.F.) AND 489 SQD"S R.N.Z.A.F. 😁😁☮️☯️🌈🌈🏳️🌈🇧🇴🌈🌈🌈🏳️🌈🇧🇴🇧🇴🌈🌈🌈🌈🇧🇴🇮🇷🇻🇪🇷🇺🇻🇳🇷🇺
I am the Walrus - goo goo ga joob
Gotta love the Walrus, cheers.
The flying battleships.
That's it :)
A flying fishing boat vs Lufthansa.
Gooood one *:)
cheers man
Nice visually, However , leaves a lot to be desired in the accuracy dept. "Chasing " a faster aircraft armed with 20mm canon, while you have.303s is not good practice. Straight and level.... ditto. I believe that 2 second bursts were customary. This allowed the barrels to cool down, and reduced jamming (apologise to Bob Marley) 😊
Thnks? One thing is, the AI does the shooting in this one.
Sunderland rear gunner V Condor's 20 mm gunner would be cool.
Condor is one of my favourite planes. Germans should have mass produced it, to rival the B29.
Great graphics
True, also the game has recently been upgraded, so it's looking even better now.
Froggy Frog 9000 not to be blowin smoke at you ... but, yes sir... i grew up when ATARI was a a big deal. This is closer to 'going' on a mission or just flying around... than i ever thought we'd have by now. Lol. Glad to see it. Now, ahem...the flying jetski please?! Be well warrior
Cheers :) Yeh I remember the Atari, those were the days. lol. Here is a link to my best video ever: If you haven't already please checkout my best ever vid by clicking on this link: th-cam.com/video/ElfexQcTZgI/w-d-xo.html
Froggy Frog 9000 thanks nice, brother
porcupine 1 condor 0 rule britannia!
no no no! we want waist gun positions in condor and a damn 2cm turret gun forward and the same in the forward gondola. then its bbw time with sunderland hehe
Uh, Sunderland tail gun couldn't depress that far. Just saying
Maybe not. The new version of this game Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition is coming out in 2 weeks... It will have very much improved everything.
My Dad flew Sunderlands in WW2.Nothing like this ever happened.Total fantasy.
Lol. There are real story of fight like this..
*prrrrrrt prrrrrt prrrrrrrrt prrrrrrrt*
An excellent rendition of the machine gun volleys :)
Complete nonsense. The Fw 200 was much faster than the Sunderland and had no weapons at all.
Actually a battle much like this did happen & the Sunderland did win it. From "RAF Flying Review Magazine" around 1968. I didn't keep the issue, too much moving around in the air force to hang on to magazines. The article was titled "Battle of the Giants" I believe.
Excellent thank you I am searching now and then over the years for things to do with Condor Vs Sunderland :)
This web page has a few stories. One here might have been the incident the RAF Flying Review mentioned:
A Sunderland versus a Fw200 over the Atlantic!
On 5 June, 1942, W3986/U of 10 Sqdn RAAF damaged U-71 with depth-charges as it dove forcing the submarine to the surface, where it strafed it. The U-boat fired back and damaged the Sunderland before limping back to base for repairs. Shortly after attacking U-71, the Sunderland came under attack by a Fw200 which sat just outside of the flying boat's MG range, hitting it with cannon fire.
Flt. Lt. Wood and his crew kept thier nerve, however, and fired back when the Fw200 finally closed in at the end of the 75-minute running gun battle, finally driving the Condor off with one German crew member dead and another wounded.

Awesome! great find there. I just had a read of the battle report from the Japanese flying boat commander, when they faced off against two B17s! The more I look into it, the more it appears the big birds faced off quite often, whenever long range maritime was involved.
+Froggy Frog 9000 I imagine the Japanese flying boat was an "Emily" which was fast and well armed rather than a "Mavis" which was slower and easy to shoot down.
