    [Apologies if someone has already noted this.] Remember, "Blue Bends Beautifully; Red Refracts Reluctantly." -- If refraction were the issue, the moon would be blue during lunar eclipses. What actually causes the red color is scattering (and likely some absorption) in the atmosphere.

    Small correction: at 1:40 Dr. Becky says its because the Earth has an atmosphere that it has a penumbra and umbra. That is not quite true, all objects have an umbra and penumbra when being cast light on by a spherical light source, its because of Earth's atmosphere that Earth's *umbra* specifically is fuzzy, whereas other planets would have a crisp umbra and penumbra boundary.

    Best episode yet Dr. Smethurst.
    I lived 10 miles from Cape Canaveral in 1964-1968 (Cocoa Beach, I was age 3-7). My earliest memories were of seeing the Gemini and Apollo program launches. My father actually met Gus Grissom before he died in the training fire. My Dad had a part time job at a gas station and Gus stopped there regularly to fill up his Corvette. I've been a hard core space nut my entire life because of those days.
    I turn 60 in a couple months. I hope to witness us become a multi-planet species, but my window is closing. I'm sure you'll see it happen, unless we can't pull our head out of our collective a$$es that is.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @qzbnyv
      @qzbnyv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I hope you get to see it! I’m in my 30s and already I sometimes lament at how little of mankind’s future I’ll get to know. I want to know how the story ends.
      It feels like it takes so long for us to inch forward, but when you look back it all happened so fast. Especially these last 200 years compared to all the years before it and so so much within our single human lifespans.
      My mother is 77 and it is wild whenever I think of how she was 25 when man landed on the moon. Those black and white historical films to me were her lived youth.
      Man even going from a barely-colour TV with horrible signal when I was a kid to these magic devices billions of us are all now carrying in our pockets. Wilder than what I could have ever dreamed.

    • @nousernamejoshua1556
      @nousernamejoshua1556 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It literally looks like a solar energy laser, JWST.
      She looks so child like when she GETS to speak about black holes. But luckily for us she’s way to light to crush the IPad for the ELT (extremely little telescope)
      It was a great episode! But there’s no way I’m FALLING FOR THAT MARTIAN WIND TRICK AGAIN! But I would be Scientifically motivated to call the Mars space drone, Pebbles.
      Penumbra Umbra 👍🏼 !
      Da moon is pink.
      But what is that light wave pattern about 1:55 which is similar to the solar pattern imaged on some earth globes, which traces like a horizontal figure 8 pattern?
      Our physical sun has a slight wobble, which translates this daily or yearly pattern?
      24:40 maybe we can’t see without a slight wobble? Sorta being the definition of time as the functioning of eyesight. Like a.c. But different. And broken currents, dark matters might be like 26:17 and why stars illuminating black holes is not a word.
      Some things are separated for a reason.
      Like Church and State if you’re someplace United States.
      In this case the light has a particular strong structure against space. A white hole. The crushing force of outer outer space is not the same “intrastellar”, even if the moon is near -11 atmospheres it’s nowhere near being outside of light or without light. Going back to the idea of a solar mechanic and a solar core which operates the Star.
      I’ll probably have to edit. I just wrote numbers down without denoting the timeline.

    • @nousernamejoshua1556
      @nousernamejoshua1556 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might change my name to: Da Moon is Pink. And say: Da moon is pink. on every episode like flat earth guy’s cause they’re funny 😄. I need a flower face.
      EDITED: Penumbra Umbrage!
      Da Moon Is Pink.
      But only in shadow, what color are we?
      EDITEDED: is the mini eclipse a Penumbra?

Of course it is a critical contributor to combustion, but as an oxidizer. So, for example, wood, kerosene and natural gas are flammable when they combine with an oxidizer like oxygen. Net: oxygen is not flammable, but would be key to future rocket engines leaving Mars.

    Thanks Becky, I have finally been dragged (kicking and screaming) into using a smart phone. I never thought about a star map using the camera to overlay the constellations. The new place I'm living in is very rural, and I had the security light bulb removed for viewing the stars anyway. This is going to make my night viewing much better, as now it's warm enough to drag the hammock out and sleep under the stars. Can really learn more of the constellations.

    You said Ontario and my heart dropped, then I read the on-screen text 💔
    Ontario is a monstrously large province. You can drive for 24 hours straight in one direction and still be in Ontario.

    We can add a follow mode to the ingenuity. basically, we can add a gravity sensor and wifi sensor to both the machines and use the gravity of mars to determine the altitude and displacement from perseverance and use the wifi sensor to determine where preference is and then code ingenuity to follow perseverance.

    My tool to watch a Solar eclipse : A shoe box. A pin hole at one small end with a larger opening near it for the eye. On the opposing end, I have a piece of white paper where the image of the Sun get projected. First used in the mid 60's.
    So, Ingenuity will be scouting ahead of Perseverance. Nice for a chopper that was mostly only a proof of concept.

    Get an external battery power adapter. You can find them for most popular camera brands. Can find ones that give options of USB-A so you can use power adapter or battery bank.
