    Hello Venkat! Hope you are doing great! Just wanna let you know that you are a life saver. I have done software engineering in 2014 but due to some domestic problems it was very hard for me to get a job in a related field. It has been a lapse of 2 years and i havn't practice or done any job related to programming in result of which all my concepts related to programming eventually vanished. Last year and i was thinking that programming is almost over for me.
    I wanna let you know Sir, you are a humanity saver. I am following your tutorials for last three months, its great. I am very happy now, cause i can code. I am hopeful now that i can get a job. Please accept a very Big hug from this student. Thank you a million times.

    Now this is what they should teach in college. These videos are worth more than a degree. I also haven't had this much fun programming in a long time now that I understand so much more. Thank you for empowering us developers to become better programmers. I'm going to be testing out Entity Framework into my test MVC project today. I've been creating classes from scratch with nested classes (List), DataReaders and if logic to populate nested classes. I want to see if Entity Framework can solve this for me. Thanks again : )

    Dear Mr. Venkat,
    I'm an avid follower of your tutorials. Recently, I have started learning Entity Framework (EF).
    While practicing the codes in my PC, I have encountered a problem.
    In your tutorial, I believe you were using Entity Framework version less than 6.0, and I am using version 6.0,
    which is why I am unable to use EntityDataSource control that you have mentioned in your tutorial.
    If I try to use the EntityDataSource control in EF 6, I get this error - This version of the Entity Data Source wizard is only compatible with EF 5.... (I have emailed you the screenshot).
    After a lot of googling, I have found out a solution as well.
    - First, if we are using EF 6, we should install the following via NuGet Package Console (in the following order):
    1. Microsoft.AspNet.EntityDataSource
    2. Microsoft.AspNet.DynamicData.EFProvider
    - Once the above is done, we need to manually, bind the data source using the following piece of code:
    1. In WebForm1.aspx :
    2. In WebForm1.aspx.cs, we will define the above 'DepartmentGrid_GetData' method :
    public IQueryable DepartmentsGrid_GetData()
    {
    EmployeeDBContext db = new EmployeeDBContext();
    var query = db.Departments_EF;
    return query;
    }
    3. Finally, I edited the data binding expression as per my class name : Eval("Employees_EF")
    [***Please NOTE that 'EntityFramework_WebApp' is the name I have given to my namespace, and 'Departments_EF' and 'Employees_EF' are the class names Entity Framework has generated according to the table names which I have used***]
    The whole point of explaining all these is to request you to add another video which would take into account the newer changes Microsoft has done, so that others (who might be using a newer version of EF) can be benefitted.
    Anyway, thanks a ton for all your tutorials. I really appreciate the efforts you have put in for all the developers and coders like me.

  • @Kifter1983
    @Kifter1983 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Just a heads up for anyone trying to follow this tutorial and running into the issue that the EntityDataSource control isn't compatible with Entity Framework version 6 and higher: Basically uninstall Entity Framework version 6 from the NuGet package manager (tools -> NuGet package manager -> manage NuGet packages for solution) and re-download Entity Framework but ensure in the versions drops down box you select version 5. You will now find the rest of the tutorial flows as expected. Note that if you're already half way through when you discovered this bug I would strongly recomment you just dump you solution and start again with version 5 of Entity Framework.
    Now as a further addendum, there's an updated EntityDataSource control available on NuGet package manager that supports Entity Framework version 6 but unfortunately this update version of the control doesn't support the nice UI to configure it in the webform design view. So for newbs like us trying to get to grips with what's going on I would recommend just downgrading your version of Entity Framework, perhaps look at how the UI has manipulated the EntityDataSource for Entity Framework v5 in the html markup after you have configured it and then that'll probably give you a good footing on how to manipulate the updated EntityDataSource control in the html markup.

    • @ZakKautz
      @ZakKautz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great advice on checking markup. This was the route I was going to take, and I'm glad someone else agrees it's a good idea.

    In Schema first approach, if T4 code generation is enabled for model no code would be generated in the Model.Designer.cs, in order to enable legacy code generation, change the value of the "Code Generation Strategy" designer property to "Legacy ObjectContext". This property is available in the Properties Window when the model is open in the designer by just right-clicking the background.

    Not sure if anyone else has run into this but I've tried this about 5x and get the same results.
    Running VS.net 2015, and I believe the current version of NuGet Package Manager. I install the EntityFramework per this tutorial and in the NuGet Pckg Mgr it shows 6.1.0. I'm guessing that's because it's the most current version. I install that but when I hover over the EntityFramework reference in my project it shows 6.0.0. Any ideas what the problem is?
    Also, when I view the EmployeeModel.Designer.cs code, I do not see any c# code. It's all commented out code that starts with "// T4 code generation is enabled for model..." Any ideas why I am not getting any generated code?
    Bottom line is I'm looking forward to watching the rest of these videos. Very easy to follow and understand. And the accompanying web page is a bonus!! Thank you!!

    Would it be possible to get an addition to this series which would discuss subject "What has happened over the last two years"? So things like new version syntax (if any), easier ways to do things, possible problems you might run into while trying these examples with newer versions like EF7 or Visual Studio 2015 and all the other things you find relevant that might have happened.
    Or, suggest a video / other source if you feel one is done already.
    Oh and thanks for a good video series. These are very easy to understand.

      +Arto Kilponen As a good example, how about this Part 1 video at 10:55, where we have EntityDataSource and the entire thing falls apart the second I press "Configure Data Source..." with message
      "This version of the Entity Data Source wizard is only compatible with Entity Framework 5. If you're not using Entity Framework 5 you can configure the control by editing the markup on the page. The page editor has IntelliSense support for ASP.NET controls. If you're using Entity Framework 6 you should be using the EF6-compatible version of the Entity Data Source control, avaiable as the Microsoft.AspNet.EntityDataSource package in NuGet."
      So, sure, I understand, type some text to the markup - but what and where?

    • @artokilponen6989
      @artokilponen6989 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One pitfall: Web Form might want you to use EF5, not EF6. And if you already took EF6, then you need to downgrade using Nuget packet manager and also _manually_ change the .edmx file (open it as XML, not as designer) and change in "ProviderManifestToken="2012"" that 2012 to 2008. This worked for me with Visual Studio 2017.
      Also, if you run into problems with Chrome, try IE. Especially if you are here just to see that you can get things to work too, not actually developing some code directly to production.
      And adding that new EF-item is not the same than in the video, but it was close enough (EF Designer from database).
      If someone here knows how I get this to work work with EF6 let alone EF7, please let me know. As said, now it "crashes" to 11:11

    When I connect the database the EmployeeModel.emdx gets added but nothing gets populated in the Designer.cs. A lot of other files gets created too. The designer simply shows few commented lines of code. And later on when I configure the data source it always the metadata error, whether I rebuild or clean the whole solution, whatever. I am using VS2013. Please help me with this issue.

    Hi venkat.The tutorial is interesting unfortunately I did not manage to configure the object context due to the following error.
    ("This version of the Entity Data Source wizard is only compatible with Entity Framework 5. If you're not using Entity Framework 5 you can configure the control by editing the markup on the page. The page editor has IntelliSense support for ASP.NET controls. If you're using Identity Framework 6 you shold bo using the EF6-compatible version of the Entity Data Source control, avaiable as the Microsoft.AspNet.EntityDataSource package in NuGet".)
    I downgraded the entity framework through the nuget but nothing worked. I am using visual studio community

      +bugz gz, I am also getting same problem. Have you get solution for this?

    • @Smile929292
      @Smile929292 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ashish Singh Maybe that's not actual anymore, but you can solve this in two ways: when adding ADO.NET Entity Data Model, choose "Entity Framework 5.x". And if you need to use EF6, then You need to add www.nuget.org/packages/Microsoft.AspNet.EntityDataSource/ to your project and changing namespace in EntityDataSource from "asp:" to "ef:". That's because EDS doesn't support EF6.
