I really admired the documentary but what I fail to agree with is the name given to the female poet, Phillis Whitley, is not a Gambian name. What is her Gambian name? We know that Kunta Kinteh was called Tobi by his so-called master but his name is Kunta Kinteh.
Thats is a good question. If you read about Phillis whitley, you will realise that she was taken as a very young girl. She was very frail , so she was bought by her mistress to be a companion for her children. She may not remember her name or even if she does, she is the only one who could have let us know perhaps through one of her poems, unlike Kunta who was was a grown up and had the courage and strength to have resisted his being changed.
Her name is from the shop that brought her. They gave her the name of the ship that brought her to American. Her surname was the surname of her master.
I actually feel inspired after watching this documentary. Concerted efforts are needed to lift the face of The Gambia in the literary arena.
