  • On Wednesday the 3rd of November Rubik's Cube returned to the Royal Albert Hall for the third time to perform an 8-minute medley of hits. Not many acts can say they've played 3 times at this historic venue, we are now officially as successful as Coldplay who have also played at the Hall 3 times. One more performance and we will equal The Beatles record of 4 performances. Then, and only then, we will have reached epic superstardom and greatness!
The Remix Prom 2021 was organised by the absolutely amazing team at Music for Youth. This organisation has supported Rubik's Cube and Osborne School for many years. Music for Youth have given our pupils and staff experiences they will never forget. Without the dedication and industry links Music for Youth have our young people would have not had the privilege to experience such incredible opportunities over the last 6 years. Our biggest thanks go to Music for Youth (especially Zoe Coakley) for all the help the charity has given us.
After arriving at the Royal Albert Hall we had to get our 32 pupils into the venue and onto the stage for a soundcheck. Soundchecking at the Royal Albert Hall is an out-of-this world experience. You're standing on the stage looking around at countless seats surrounded by history. The sound is world-renowned for being incredible. Pupils instantly relaxed and looked forward to their performance.
Backstage there was lots of fun, lots of food, lots of toilet breaks and some last minute rehearsing. Sam really got into the swing of things by singing into a deodorant can.
The pupils performance was simply barnstorming. All the pupils gave it their absolute all. The medley began with Queen's 'Crazy little thing called love' with Finn playing cajon excellently. Then Oscar joined in on the electric guitar for 'I can't get no satisfaction' by the Rolling Stones and The Beatles 'Daytripper.' Rubik's Cube favourite 'Breaking Free' from High School Musical made its way onto the setlist, the young people love signing this song. Sam approached the microphone for a solo of 'Bad Habits' by Ed Sheeran. A huge cheer erupted after he sang and the place went wild. The medley ended with 'Stop crying your heart out' by Oasis with some lovely group singing from Lily, Shannon, Elsie and Jenna. Mikey played incredibly throughout on the tambourine, and smashing out some excellent cajon for the final 2 minutes. The Rubik's Cube choir signed and sang their hearts out - so many individual triumphs. We're so proud.
A huge thank you to all the staff, admin team and parents who made the day all go swimmingly. A huge extra thank you to Sonia, Marc, Caroline, Lucy and Yvonne who made all this happen for the young people, a massive task with only 3 weeks to get it all together. Next up for Rubik's Cube is the Christmas Tour!
