- A Japanese boy and his kite are featured in this instructional film. He fancies children's day. He visits Yokohama a viewer informs me by . May be viewers may enlighten me. A viewer informs me: this film was shown to 5th and 6th grade students in the USA for "world studies" classes.
I have been to Japan last year, and many things changed. The places I’ve visited was all modern and high-tech. One of many attributes that I fell in love in Japan was that despite of her rapid modernization, you can still see the kind of village where Ito lived even today. It was apples to the eyes.
Good to hear. It was always a country where old and new were delightfully intermingled.
少年が叔母と訪れたのは横浜市の最高峰円海山の麓、峰か田中。円海山の頂上にはアンテナ群が見える。帰りの電車に乗り込む京浜急行駅は屏風ヶ浦。途中、山渓園とか裏の八王子海岸に寄り関内へ。伊勢佐木町のホコ天が始まったのが昭和３９年だからそれ以前の貴重なフィルムですね。電車の型が変わったり伊豆や多摩川の風景はご愛嬌ですね。それと昔の大桟橋が懐かしい。

So romantic. :) Maybe it's the rural setting, or maybe it's the simpler times that appeals so. But I think the sunny, detailed, and skillful footage of the highlights in a world of the past is what makes you happy watching this instructional film.
i remember growing up in the 60's, being born in 1957, remember hearing a plane overhead, & running outside to see it. not very many planes passed over our house then. much has changed now. of course this was in Tennessee. so innocent then. good film..
In our country we still do that even though there is an airport nearby. People still like seeing flying stuffs..
A very nice film. I'm younger than Itoh, but the sceneries that appeared in this film are familiar to me. And the kite. I did the same thing as him.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't see that much difference compared to contemporary Japan? If it weren't for the old-fashioned cars and the video degradation, I could mistake it for a video of recent times.

いやあよく撮られてますね。食事の時の着物がちょっと新し過ぎて違和感ありましたが、全体的に、撮影対象物が非常に的確で素晴らしいです。1963年の日本の姿がよく分かります。灯台下暗しで、私たち日本人が撮ってしまうと案外焦点がずれてしまうのかもしれません。(赤に白ラインの)京浜急行で三浦の実家の方に行って来たのでしょうね。京急はたまに乗りますけど、今もどこか昭和の空気が感じられて良いですね。
My aunt was probably in Japan at this time. She lived a life like this during this time. She lived in Japan until 1993 (the year of my birth hehe).
Thanks forthe interest. This educational film was made primarily for American children. Classroom teaching made great use of visual materials to bring subjects as geography home to the pupils. I think that it was taken in Kodachrome ( available even before WW2) , or Ektachrome Commercial, but I'm not sure.
The ending is such a lovely metaphor for the beauty and pain of boyhood.
Steven Gallanter there is a Czech borne artist named Pavel Marie. He talks about being raised in communist controlled Czech and also being the third son.. Oppressed politically and within the family, he looked in the sky and dreamed of flying a plane out of Czech to freedom some day.. Now he makes the cutest planes for children to dream in too.

ln 1968 lto's kite landed in my back yard in Houston.
This vid sure brings back my childhood memory. I was 1st grade. I can sure relate to the everyday life of this boy. Although It's kind of funny to call him Ito, because it's like calling a little boy "Johnson" or "smith".
Ito should be glad he didn't have to walk that far in high heel shoes like his aunt did☺️. Nice film, thank you!

お金持ちの人かな？私は12歳までは六畳一間、共同台所、共同便所もちろん風呂なし４人家族の
絵にかいたような貧乏一家でした。今思えば皆そこそこ貧乏ながら楽しい時代を過ごしたと思います。
贅沢を知らないと貧乏も大した問題じゃなかった。

Nice. But unintentionally funny. That poor kite never got to see all those cars and trucks in the city. But it did get a wonderful ball of string. Enjoyable nevertheless.

In the video, you can find an advertisement "峰の灸" (probably near his home) when the boy Ito is leaving his home on foot along the rice field with aunt to Isezaki in Yokohama. So his home must have been around the area with the current postcode 〒235-0044 Yokohama city, Kanagawa prefecture

男の子のお名前は何なのでしょう？「いいと」？「いとう」？「いとう」なら苗字みたいですよね😅妹はちゃんと「ゆき(ゆうき？)」と紹介されてるから、まさか兄だけ苗字って事は無いでしょう。
見続けてたら妹は「ゆき」ちゃん、彼は「いと」君のような気がしてきました。
他の方も言ってますが、たしかにドキュメンタリーというよりは作られた感がありますね。
でも昔の映像見られるのは楽しいです😊

Mas Tad Yeah that stuff doesn't really translate for us white people. The film crew probably just asked him "Hey what's your name?" and he said "Ito."
+Mas Tad and you can refer to folks by their family name... no big deal..
Ito also means a string. Maybe the film maker intendedly used his surname.

I'm curious as to what the point of this film was meant for. Was it meant to be shown to an American audience to help ease their animosity towards Japan following WWII?

Ah how i wish I could watch hours and hours of this type of wholesome era documentaries.
I was born in Yokohama and lived there until I was 18. (1956-1974) This is exactly how I remember Japan. It's hard to tell whether the city scene was in Yokohama, but the presence of Western women shopping makes is very probable. This is so very enjoyable... little things like the red train with the white stripe, the colorful busses, and the country houses make me nosatalgic.
I feel the same way. I think we were much better off in those days. We are the last of a generation before the technological explosion

At least once a week when I was in elementary school in the early '70s in the suburbs of Chicago, our class would assemble in the auditorium and watch these kind of educational films as part of our A-V (Audio-Visual) periods. There's nothing like a Bell-Howell 16mm projector playing these kind of old films, when all of sudden the film goes off the reels and the screen goes blank. Those were the times for collective "Aaaaaaaaaaaaawwwws!" and "Liiiiiights!" LOL! Love these films with their corny soundtrack and their campy narration although they weren't trying to be at all.

これはアメリカの学校で外国のことを教えるフィルムなのでセミドキュメンタリー風のようです。凧のストーリー（台本）があってそれにからめて日常生活を紹介しているので少し編集に適当なところがありますね！確かに多摩川を越えたのに着いたのは横浜なので「あれ？」となりました。
あとこの話は郊外に遊びに来たのではなく、この郊外（田舎）が少年の住んでいる家で横浜に買い物に行くという筋です。
撮影前に玄関前とかめっちゃくちゃ綺麗に掃除した形跡がある・・こういう部分って日本人特有ですなぁ。

こういう記録映画は、いかにも欧米人がイメージする「日本らしさ」(たまに中国と混同する)を「演出」した記録映画が多いんだけど。そうなると、もう純粋な記録じゃないんだが、これは割と忠実だね。当時の様子を知るには凄く貴重だ。 なぜ日本人が記録した物は無いんだろう。
食事の時、お母さんはあんな白い綺麗な着物は絶対着ないぞ。 あの凧、絵柄や足のひらひら見ると日本製じゃないね。中国製だ。 糸が切れる凧揚げあるあるまでやってくれてる。
（普通は糸がきれたら、凧は飛ばされながら落ちるんだけど、それを言っちゃあ、お終いか）
当日はカメラや8mm等
一般人には超高級品だからかも
風向きによっては何処までも高くとんでいく凧もありますよ。
私が小学生の頃に学校で作った凧は、とても良く上がるので先生に奪われ(笑)
糸が足りずに他の子の子から借りて継ぎ足し、長く延びた糸は空で大きくたわみ凧の本体が点に見えるほど高く上がりました。
そこは風の吹きかたも良い場所ではあったと思いますが、私同様良く翔んだはいいが、力負けして糸を手放し天高く飛んでいってしまったものもありました。
糸を離して墜落してしまうのは凧の出来が良くないか、まだそれ程高度が上がっていない時点だと思いますよ。
My father was born in 1954, so I can assume he lead a similar life to the one which the boy lived.
屛風ヶ浦、弘明寺、『伊勢佐木町・・・あぁ、何もかもが懐かしき風景！！ 少年が凧をあげていた場所はどのあたりでしょうか？
今ではJMU磯子造船所のある辺りがあんなに鄙びた海辺で、住宅地のある高台に桑畑が広がっていたなんて。
余りの変貌に驚きますが、京浜急行の電車の塗装は今でも変わってないんですね。
今の日本じゃ、正月に凧揚げも羽根つきもしないし、門松もない、注連縄もしない、餅を飾る家も少なくなり、 日の丸も掲げない、獅子舞も来ないし、全くもってダラけている。
平成に入ってからおかしくなった
正月といえば、駄菓子屋で売っていたコマを買って回したり、スポーツ店にも置かれるようになった竹馬なんかに乗ったりしたものだった。それから福笑いとかね。
スマホいじって、コタツの中で寝てるのがせいぜいですよ。
日めくりカレンダーのイメージがなくなった

@MichaelRogge Oh, I'm sorry that I called you Mike. I was so silly. Well...about your question, I have to say "not really" but I used ride this train every day for high school through this station the boy and his aunt took. This film remind me many things and I had impressive feeling.

The only different is the people clothing style and most is the roads, here where I live even the farmers roads are asphalt or cement.
I am living here in a country side of Japan for almost three decades and I can tell you that there’s still so many places like this in the video but like I said the roads are just asphalt now, the people are the same as well.

The children's festival day(mainly for boys) in Japan is on May 5 every year. I think this boy probably was born on 1951 or 1952, about the same age as American famous child actors Kurt Russell, Jay North, etc. Though I'm slightly younger than him, I remember the boy's festival day in 1963 clearly. Thanks for updating!
I remember that May 5th was a joyful day with colorful carps flowing in the air when I stayed in Japan in the fifties.

Ito is a family name. I think they lived outside Odawara. Just beyond the train station, it appeared that there was a castle there, and it looked like Odawara castle. It's just a guess. I used to live in Yokohama, and lots of things have changed since the little boy visited. I hope he got to go outside Japan.
My wife, who is from Kamakura, still puts out the dolls, and they are beautiful. I love how she keeps up with the traditions, even when our children are adults now.
My mother-in-law bought the carp banners to fly for our child, but we don't put them out anymore. We also have a kite and used to go to a park nearby. My son named it JetPilot, and we used to make it a family thing to go out together. That ended many years ago, but now I think I need to bring it out one day.
I hope Ito sees this and tells us what he did with his life.

Another comment from me. The destination after the train ride is Yokohama. It was a prestige to display Koi banners higher than the neighbors back then. But nowadays neighbors complain because the wind chime comes with the banner poles are too noisy so people don't do that in the cities. How sad is that? Of course people nowadays live in the small apartment buildings they call "mansions", there is no room to display those dolls and banners.And a lot of time it's a burden to family members to purchase those traditional dolls and stuff. They are not cheap you know. How sad is that?
