Fantastic channel, so much education for me at age 73. I am enjoying every minute of your beautiful family. Your kids are so sweet, very smart and really are a big help in your large family. Learning so much about Nebraska too and chickens and cows.....love your new dog and your cats too. I grew up with one brother and two sisters on four acres just a town away from where I live now. Never been any further east then Colorado and New Mexico, but love to camp and travel. We were beach kids and thats where we always camped up and down the coast of beautiful California. We were a "surfing" family and truly loved it. My Dad was a door to door milkman for 32 years and we all enjoyed going on the route with him in the summers of the 50 and 60s. Keep up the great work. Love you all from Debbie and Dexter-Dog my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua companion living a quiet crafty life in southern California.😊😊
When our kids were little we would have a little house on the prairie night. We cooked outside and only used candles and the fireplace for light. We played games and just spent time with no distractions. We would all sleep in the living room together. They thought it was so much fun. Luka seems so much more comfortable around the camera now. He is just the cutest when he is teasing you.
Sarah todays vlog is another perfect example of how wonderful your family lives , works & plays together. Idk if you realize how rare & wonderful this is to see. I love Seth showing off his "thumbs up" skills ❤ You got it Seth! We don't use heat or light on our chickens in the winter either. Why we do have some freezing temps, our winters are probably mild compared to Nebraska, but we find that our new layers lay most of the winter if not all. So if they've just started laying, you might get eggs straight through till next fall. I've learned that it's a good idea to discourage pup from eating the broken or raw eggs as there's less chance he will become an egg eater. Once they discover there something yummy in there they like to break them open and eat them. Love this video and definitely want to make whatever that is you just made! Yum!
So glad the outside doggy is working out! Also just remember they are animals and mainly they need wind break relief , dry living conditions and thawed water. 😉 Maybe a tote in the garage for easy access for clean RV bedding would be a solution so that you could use your fireplace as wanted. There are brands of automatic coop door that you can set a time for it to open instead of day/night auto open/close.... that might be helpful for ducks.
I love your children's imagination. When I see a messy home, I know how real you are. We've all have been there, done that. I don't have any animals, so I can't relate but I love watching you learn how to care for them. I wish you had smellavision because Belle's cinnamon rolls looked delicious. 😋
Oh Sarah, you pulled at my heart strings in the last clip. I imagine it’s very hard once your kids start their own lives so I’m glad to cuddle mine while I still can for now. ❤
Sarah, you are all making so many memories in your "little house". Watching the kids roast marshmallows is delightful! You WILL look back at this season and have so many fond memories. There was a country song titled "Love Grows Best in Little Houses" with few walls to separate. I think that's true.
Chickens actually handle cold better than extreme heat. We’ve had chickens for years and never heat their coop. A heated waterer is a huge help though.
We have chickens in zone 5 and they do really well in our harsh winters. They will lay eggs in the winter, especially if they have access to outdoors, but they just lay fewer eggs. Good Ventilation, dry bedding, a dust bath in a dry area and an electric waterer will be all they need.
We have chickens in Central Canada with cold winters. They do well here in winter. They do not go outside when it is very cold but we have lights on a timer from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. They lay decently well this way better then they did in August when it was so hot.
@@OurTribeofMany That said, my chickens are in a barn not a Coop and it is insulated. I'm not sure if your building is. Though I don't think Nebraska gets nearly as cold as Manitoba, Canada.
One of our fondest memories when we moved into our new home is cooking hot dogs and marshmallows in the fireplace with grandma and grandpa while the kids were freshly bathed and in their pj's. ❤

Watching this with my kids today as part of homeschool. My teenager is very interested in homesteading. She has her own chickens she tends too. Even though we don't have snow it is very educational. And we can't get enough of all your animals!!
I remember those Nebraska winters but living in Arizona now ...well glad that they are mild out out here as my old bones cannot take that cold anymore...and yet I still miss my old state.
Great to see you and your family settling in to the new property. Your children are so wonderful and imaginative. That last meal you made with the tomato sauce and flatbreads etc looked amazing, can you share the recipe please? Was lovely to see your little ones toasting their marshmallows. Thank you for sharing Sarah xxx
It's good to put some natural branches for them to perch on in the coop. Smaller in diameter to medium. It's easier and healthier for them to grip and the roughness of the branches give them air flow under their feet. As they have demonstrated, they like natural branches -- it's what they use in the wild. The ladder might be difficult for gripping and even painful because they are flat, rectangular with no airflow :)
Good job with the birds! I’ve had chickens for years and watching all these people that have jumped into chicken keeping recently is driving me crazy. Heaters?! 🤦🏻♀️ Sooo many people burn down their entire coop and loose all their animals that way. They’re BIRDS lol. We do deep litter method and feed very early in the morning to get their systems warming up, oatmeal and corn work great in the winter! The only thing I’d recommend is a heated water holder to prevent freeze.
We have an omlet automatic door on our coop. It turns a light on inside the coop a bit before the door shuts, and they learned quickly to go in when the light turned on. The first few nights I had to go out and shove in stragglers, but the figured it out. Our first flock used to roost in the trees, but we taught them to come down in the evening with some scratch corn. 😊 Whenever we have lost a chicken it's been to raccoons.
Also- you may want to ask your carpenter friend to build some sort of lean to - to protect your feed buckets from snow and give you protection from the wind this winter. Or build a “tack box” to place the feed buckets and water in to prevent from being xo twitch snow and ice. Just a suggestion

I live 3 1/2 hours north of Lincoln. My chickens (30) will be going through their second winter. I keep 2 heat lamps (hung from the ceiling about 2-3’ off the floor), and heated water bowls. They also have several inches of pine wood chips to nest in, a low roost and a high roost. They stay inside when they choose. Feed them well, and they will be able keep themselves warm.
I live where it gets easily to -35 Celsius with wind chills sometimes in the -50. My chickens did well last winter with just a heated waterer and a light on a timer. I would use extreme caution using heating lamps. They are a fire hazard so I chose not to use one. My barn is insulated thought.
Edited for correction: if their house was insulated I would not have heat lamps, but it is corrugated tin, so I feel it’s needed. I’m sure they are not as hardy as birds who have no heat in the winter.
@@rosannasauereisen2827 honestly, I am too, but I’m not sure what else to do. I try to manage dust and anything flammable. And I pray. Yes, I pray for those silly birds. 🥰
Your coop winterization is great! I'm in Montana, and I don't do artificial light, but I do turn the heat lamp on (zip tied so it doesn't fall) if it's below zero. I didn't last year and I lost a few. I feel terrible about it still.
We live in Iowa and have had chickens over 10 yrs. We don't use a heat lamp either. They survive just fine. Run around and plays in the snow. We increase their protein in the fall amd winter. It helps with new feather growth and egg production.

For the extra bedding…. Amazon has soft sided storage bags that zip close. I use them for my extra beddings for my Airbnb! I put a fabric softener in with them, when being stored!
I live in Southeast Texas and we do not have winters like you do however when it is in the thirties I turn on the heat lamp and my chickens are almost 10 years old and very healthy
There is no better heat than wood heat! I hope you'll put a woodstove or fireplace in your new house cause you'll love it!! I live in Maine and have always had a woodstove, just make sure you clean or get someone to clean the chimney every year!!!
We bought a house in the country in April of 2022 that came with a woodstove. We love the feeling of wood heat! I don't know if I could go back. Especially living in Central Canada where it gets so cold in winter. I felt cold much of the winter previously.
You might consider covering the RV with a tarp, as much as you can without blocking access. We use the reinforced clear plastic tarps around the farm. They also come in dark colors which would protect from sun, but the clear would let light inside.
No supplemental heat for the birds in the winter!!! I had to chuckle when you mentioned watching the puppy go up the steps. They are so clumsily at that stage :)
We have had property for 5 years and just recently got Guinea’s. They are SO FUN TO WATCH. Not the smartest but we love them and we had fewer stink bugs this year.
From one farmer to another, if you want your chickens to keep laying, you can get lights on timers that will simulate the sun, and yes, heat lamps help as well. Just a thought😀 Also, I wrote a book about dogs, and if you're interested, I would love to send you a signed copy!! Love your content! hugs from Ontario Canada
The chickens will be fine. They are resilient. We've had them for 4 years in Michigan winters and never lost any due to cold Temps. You will still get a lot of eggs in the winter because your chickens are young. As they get older, they slow down a lot in the winter.
When our boys were younger, we used to roast marshmallows over a candle 😂 Yes, I missed my sons too when they moved out. I think it seemed worse to me maybe because I had a loss in our little family before that. Chickens are quite resilient. If it’s below freezing we have put in a heat bulb. We have had waters freeze on us. Then we end up putting buckets of water in the pen. Y’all are great at taking care of your animals! Live in the moment, even when the house is small and messy. Those years pass by so quickly! This too shall pass!😊❤ Growing up, my parents and sibs, 13 in number, lived in a 24x16 house, with a small leanto at the end of the house. Some slept in bunk beds. It was very pioneerish.
Your family’s goodness and kindness is such a wonderful example of how good clean Christian Living can be a Blessing! Your children are such a Joy to see and hear! Watching them grow up has been so Wonderful! God Bless you all🙏🏻🕊✝️🌸♥️
I just had my fourth baby and I'm struggling to keep the house as tidy as it used to be. It's encouraging to see a normal working house with kids. Looks just like our place in-between cleaning/tidying.
Hi Sarah, you may want to switch out the metal ladders for wooden ones for the winter. Metal tends to freeze and their feet might freeze when they’re roosting on the metal. But otherwise you are doing incredibly awesome! I live in Northwest Minnesota and my birds never had heat lamps or anything like that and they did just fine. I love watching your joy and excitement with the animals!
Weve never heated our coop. We just keep the water from freezing with a bucket heater. Chickens are hearty birds. We live where it can get to -30, so very cold. They would probably appreciate some heat but will thrive fine without too. Also I love your real life vlogs with messy house and all! It's more relatable for me 😊
Messes are tangible reminders of our blessings! Laundry is warm comfy clothing we are blessed with. Dishes are bountiful meals that nourish our bodies. Toys are laughter, creativity and time together, Etc! Rewriting the words in our head makes it easier and honors the Lord Who is the author of our blessings!
You are such a joy to watch.the kids are wonderful and free to use their imaginations in a big way.this is what a happy healthy home looks like that loves Jesus.
Buy a huge tarp to cover your RV. That’s what we do with ours that we store. Just a suggestion. The lil fella whom I have tried the entire video for his name. I. Not good at that. He has the absolute sweetest smile. I love seeing him smile. Thank you for the video. Walker Farm Fam. Is a channel I watch. Great Christian family and you can get some ideas on your chickens. I don’t believe Gary lights or heats the coops. They have a couple. Also, Cassie loves chickens too. She might help you with anything regarding your chickens. Just a suggestion. They also have a guardian dog for their animals. Gable is doin a great job with the chickens. Hopefully he will teach the new puppy. Thank you for the video.
You find your birds lay through winter since it’s there first year! Next year they will probably slow way down, that’s why so many add new chicks to the flock every spring so they get eggs every winter ❤️
I know I’m hrs late, but what about using your porch to store extra bedding or the fermented feed? I’m not sure if you have any empty, but that could hold the bedding or even garbage bags. I know Nebraska gets some really cold temps in single digits, you’ll need something for sure then.
We are in zine 6a/6b... we don't usually heat the coop unless it gets down to single digits. Last yr, we did wrap the run in 3m painter tarp because of the negative & high winds

I’m waiting for Solo to share his chai recipe again!! I asked on a previous video I think ❤ I LOVE CHAI. Gable is adorable and getting big already😊
Loose tea or tea bags....one third milk.....two thirds water.....cinnamon,ginger,nutmeg(if you like it). Bring to a boil, add sugar and it's Chai Kenyan Style!
@@OurTribeofMany Many Thanks !! I know in one of your earlier videos, or I think that I know, some of Solos family was in visiting or something and he was making a big pot of it. Now that I said that, I hope it was you guys !! Lol.
For the extra bedding…. Amazon has soft sided storage bags that zip close. I use them for my extra beddings for my Airbnb! I put a fabric softener in with them, when being stored!
Those cinnamon rolls look good.
Micah seems like such a responsible fellow.👍🏽👍🏽
Cool video! Lots to do on the homestead! I love Micah's mustache!
Beautiful Family, the cinnamon rolls look delicious!!
Destiny with her sweatshirt on backwards 😂😂 LOVE IT!! 😅
Lol, right?😂🥰
Ha....something that regularly happens around here😂
Pullets will lay consistently through the winter. We have the same coop door and set timer to timer to ensure they are all in before the door close!
I think they are called pullets before they start to lay eggs and hens after they begin to lay.
This was such a fun vlog to watch, love your family! I really wanted to see the coop door close, lol.
Large plastic totes with lids for the extra RV linens would do the trick! You can even store it on the deck. ❤
The calm at the end of the day is just the best 😊 i would love to have a real fire! So cozy and comfy
Oh my word the puppy is SO CUTE 😍😍😍😍
How nice.
The chickens will be fine. They are resilient. We've had them for 4 years in Michigan winters and never lost any due to cold Temps. You will still get a lot of eggs in the winter because your chickens are young. As they get older, they slow down a lot in the winter.
Y’all are the busiest people!! Kiddos, animals , shopping and cooking !! I love it !! 😀😀
Gable is so cute!!
It’s so funny when you call this house “ tiny”, it would be a huge house to most people.
Wonderful family video. I so love seeing your day to day. TFS
Enjoy the children and animals house work will always be there
Sarah The Children they are getting so big there voices are changing Love you all 🙏🏻✝️☮️💙💕🌹💐💜❤️🍀🌺🍁🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Just love watching your videos. I only have 3 kids (15,7&1) so I’m always on my toes as well.
When our boys were younger, we used to roast marshmallows over a candle 😂
Yes, I missed my sons too when they moved out.
This too shall pass!😊❤
Growing up, my parents and sibs, 13 in number, lived in a 24x16 house, with a small leanto at the end of the house. Some slept in bunk beds. It was very pioneerish.
I just love your channel! You have a good homeschool routine, and I appreciate how real you keep things.
Your family’s goodness and kindness is such a wonderful example of how good clean Christian Living can be a Blessing!
Your children are such a Joy to see and hear! Watching them grow up has been so Wonderful!
God Bless you all🙏🏻🕊✝️🌸♥️
Beautiful family
Gray kitties are always the sweetest.
I can't believe he only gave you a 2 or 3! I love seeing messes...because it feels like our home.
Love that puppy.
Pick up some of the extra large vacuum seal bags for the extra bedding. Those are good for out of season clothes too.
I just had my fourth baby and I'm struggling to keep the house as tidy as it used to be. It's encouraging to see a normal working house with kids. Looks just like our place in-between cleaning/tidying.
Absolutely normal!!! 👏. Congrats on the baby!
You always seemed close family but since moving into the small house you all seem even closer xx
