Senior Fitness - Resistance Band Exercises Full Body Workout

  • In this session, we are incorporating more resistance band routines into our exercise.
    Resistance bands come in many weights of resistance so only use a band that you are comfortable with. If a lighter weight works better for you than always choose your comfort level.
    We're doing a full body workout today which helps with all areas of the body. We put a lot of stress and strain on our bodies throughout the week and working with resistance in our workouts helps with strengthening areas that we use the most.
    Arms, legs, core, shoulders etc. are all places we can strengthen with resistance bands and not to mention, they're fun to use!
    Remember to drink lots of water, breathe and take your time with your comfort level.

    WOW... I am sooo impressed, best workout (senior or otherwise) that I have found - easy to follow, very clear what to do, and exactly the right amount of work for us seniors with some limited energy and capabilities. Made me feel like I finally have found a teacher/trainer I can stick with!!

    Hello Meredith, hope you and yours are well...
    Still hanging in there especially being 80 and with more restrictions here in Toronto its great to be able to have you guiding me and a few of my neighbours ( not together) through these exercises, love the fact how you constantly remind me to inhale exhale, being so used to not deep breathing correctly I am amazed how I am learning how to do this as well Be Safe Be Well!

    Thank you for the free videos. This pandemic has really impacted on 60+ age group as it's been nearly 2 years of not being able to move freely within Australia especially. Due to mask wearing & other limitations in this country particularly so many of us have been sedentary and the end result is massive muscle loss & weight gain. Have done the well with dropping the excess weight but getting active again is so difficult

    i'm not a senior, but i haven't been into exercise, so thanks for your video! battling health issues and excessive abdominal adipose. WAs shocked when i measured my waist, something i don't do.

    I'm 48 but have health issues that keep me from doing a lot of strenuous workouts. I find with these I can go slower or harder with them for how I am feeling physically that day and I still swear and burn calories.

    Outstanding work with the therapy bands, I use to use the bands to pump up doing competition, NPC.
    I became a SARescue and would swim for hours. I equated bands with swimming.
    I have added
    I too encourage ppl to be realistic with training and have pointed ppl in your direction.
    I found I could double the bands and even do dynamic tension hold as you executed you range of motion.

      ps - after reading the comments. I'm 81, had a stroke a bit over a year ago. I have a therapy pool nearby where I walk on a treadmill and have an endless river coming towards me 3 days a week. I know I'm in need of resistance training. Upper body needs strengthening as well. I'm looking forward to our session with you tomorrow. :) I'll start here and work my way towards working all of your videos. Thank you.

    I posted on another video how much longer liked your exercises and sequence. Thanks for replying.
    Just found this video and like it even more! My groups are 8-30 people at several senior living communities. The age range is 75-98! Their comprehension is much slower than a younger senior population and I had a challenge getting them all to position the panda correctly! I speak slowly and make sure they can see me and how I place the band.
    I do think this particular sequence will be more user friendly to the advanced senior. I will be testing it today with two large groups.
    A question: many seniors have shoulder impingement or pain which limits their ability to take the band often to even shoulder level! Up and overhead isn’t even a consideration. What do you suggest as an alternative to still hit the intended muscles? Now I just saw raise it to your level of comfort. Any suggestions you have are appreciated!

      As far as your question is concerned...I too rarely do any overhead movements. Side raises no higher than shoulder level, but enough to get contraction in the shoulder muscles is my suggestion. Also, upright rows, again, even if range of motion is smaller but the shoulder muscles are being utilized...that is what we are looking for.

    I'm late to the game, but watched because this looped in my TH-cam feeds. Exercises are great, but are you sitting because helpful for those unable to withstand standing while performing routine? I get the inner/outer work is best sitting, but the others could work while standing, right? We sit enough; why add more sitting?🤔👍

      Just keep breathing, that is the main thing:) Exhale on the exertion is helpful but not necessary!

      Hello! Thank you for the comment! Yes, these exercises are not only safe for osteoporosis, hip areas, and total back...they are quite beneficial. The movements are slow and controlled, and will strengthen the body which will build up bone mass as well as the entire body of muscles.

    This is the third of your resistance band exercises I've tried and it is my favorite. Could you comment on the pros and cons of resistance bands vs. free weights?

      Hi Catherine! Thank you for the comment and support of the channel and workouts! As far as pros and cons, there are so many too many to list. I will say it is a matter of preference, first and foremost. With weights, you know the "weight" you are using, vs a band that you control how much resistance/"weight" you put on it. Also, bands get to all the small areas in and around the muscles which I like, vs weights that target the larger muscle groups in most general exercises.
      Again, I think switching between the two is a great way to get benefits from both and really work the entire body.

      Reps will depend on the band resistance you have, etc…but 10-12 is a good number. Also, exhale on exertion of the body. Thank you!

    Hello dear Meredith... i have a question at 21:18 we are lifting our legs up ans you said not to use the knees... but I don´t know how we lift the leg w/o using the knee and my knees hurt ... sooo what am I doing wrong. ?

      Hi Alice! The focus needs to be on the quadriceps muscles. It’s hard to do sometimes, but the more you are able to work the muscles you will feel the difference. Keep me posted!

    Please slow down, our group made up of mostly lung patients in their middle to late 60s and can not keep up with you. We have to keep stopping and starting your videos. Wonderful workout but too fast for our older lung patients and those with joint pain.

      Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate your comments. As far as the pace is concerned, the many videos I have created are for a multitude of abilities and levels. I highly recommend you viewing others to see if those are at a better pace for your group. Starting with the slower paced workouts and working up, if some can:)
      I also am working on new videos and content, and will address your issue with a slower paced workout...I truly hope it will help and benefit your group!

      Hi Lordslady. You can slow down the video to whatever speed you like (though the sound will also slowdown so the talking might sound a bit strange). To slow the video, touch your screen, then in the top right corner you will see three dots. Touch them (or click on them with your mouse). A menu will appear and about half way down there is an option called "playback speed". Touch that and you can choose to play the video at half (0.5x) or quarter the speed (0.25x) or any other option that suits your group. The slowing down options are at the upper half of the list and the speeding up choices are towards the bottom. I hope this helps.

    I know this is an older video, so I hope you get to see my comment. It's March 2023, and I just want to tell you how much I appreciate your seated workouts. Almost a year ago, I had a heart attack following a stroke six months prior. My PT introduced me to your channel at the rehab facility where I recovered after an extended hospital stay. It has been a much slower recuperation process than I'd hoped, but I made decent progress - until I got Covid over Christmas. It was a HUGE setback. I'm only just starting to feel a little more like myself. Although it's been difficult, I'm so-o-o very thankful for the gentle, slow but strengthening movements you demonstrate clearly and patiently (without any weird condescending attitude). It's like you understand my struggle with limited energy and low stamina as I am unable to participate in high intensity standing or floor exercises right now. I'm committed to improving my health prognosis for the chronic diseases I'm overcoming and determined to regain my full mobility. Your content is helping me succeed. THANKS, Meredith!

    Thanks for they exercises as they seem great and so far best for me. I've not been swimming over lockdown and have sore knees and trying to strengthen up the surrounding muscles when not out walking. Thanks

    Meredith thank you so much for your videos… I just turned 67 and during this pandemic I put on about 40 pounds… Five weeks ago I started the keto lifestyle… And I’m down 21 pounds… I ordered my resistor bands and I’m walking about 2 miles a day but your videos are perfect while I’m at work and I have some spare time. I haven’t stretched in a long time So this is perfect thank you so much

    I was looking for some exercises for my mom who is slowly getting old (60) and needs to start doing some light exercise. Thanks for the tips! She can start out with 5 minutes a day because she can do it at home (no excuses) and I believe she will build a habit. Also, your videos are nice, you are very cute and you have positive vibes, thank you for doing this.

      Hi Lu! Thank you for the comment. As for calories burned, that truly depends on the individuals size, effort, band resistance, etc. I would estimate around 200-300 calories average. I hope this helps!

    Seems just what I was looking for, to gradually work at muscle building. I have shoulder impingement, & bursitis that mainly affects my mobility of my R. Shoulder & arm. Have been picking up randomly exercises, on TH-cam, unfortunately nothing that I could corporate as a daily workout, that would motivate me daily to pursue. Thank you.

    Thank you so much for this Meredith. What a comprehensive workout.
    I am learning how to properly use the bands as I have a lifetime of using weights and many times the bands allow me to connect or “feel” the contractions of the muscles better and they seem to feel safer as well.
    I’ll be following this workout and any others workouts or helpful videos that you may have.
    It feels good to be able to transition into a new modality that just seems better for me as I approach 60.

    I have to be careful thanks to arthritis in my knee and spine. It's a slow, steady recovery. Thanks for this, recently purchased a strong rubber band which works well here.

    My wife and I are just starting to use these bands. Not si=ure how to know which color band to get for each of us. I am using black and she has light blue. I guess after using them for an exercise we can judge from there./ This is areally good looking routine to start with. Thank you for posting this.

    I'm really grateful for your videos. After a total knee replacement surgery six months ago and at home mostly because of the Covid pandemic, I had difficulty in finding a workout for the whole body that I could follow till the end.     I'm so glad I found your video, Meredith. I am a big proponent of resistance band training. That's all I do now after using weights for many years. Your routine in this video is PERFECT for my 89-year-old mom who wants to exercise at home. I am ordering her two sets of your recommended TheraBands so she can have one set untied, and another set tied. And, of course, I'm going to share your video with her. I'll let you know how she likes it. I'm sure she will!
