I know I will always find the answer to the question I'm seeking if I go to one of your videos. Plus getting to listen to your enchanting accent. I would like to suggest to you, and every other person making gardening videos, that a clear, lingering shot of where you're cutting, is invaluable. Thank you for all the help you've given me over the years.

I had a Jackmanii clematis around my mailbox pole for 20y+. When we sold our house, the new owners razzed most of the garden to dirt😢. I was happy to see the clematis make a comeback the next spring. I hope they left it alone this time!

Really enjoyed the back story on cultivars, the cutting hole in fence and the rock part all news to me ;) 50 plus years ago a woman with the same wonderful accent turned to me and said if it's growing on a lattice it must be a Clematis, while not always true it stuck in my head along with all wonders of the garden. I see this video was recorded 3 years ago, but this is so well done, it will be relevant for a long time! I have subscribed to your channel, because I really enjoyed your presentation of one of my favorite plants ... the Clematis. Thanks and welcome to our channel. As time permits, you may want to scroll through our channel and view some of our other (many) videos on the subject of Clematis. Over the years, we've refined and updated our selection to include the BEST performers for our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US region and since your conditions are similar to that these offerings should work well for you too.
Hopefully, after viewing them and enacting our various tips and suggestions, you'll be able to turn your "struggles" into triumphs! 😉👍💚

By the way, do you know that the Wilson's (as my grandmother used to say) come from "a long illustrious line of sheep stealers"! 🙁
Our ancestors were "reivers" - cattle and sheep rustlers in southern Scotland and Northern England.
Tenacious, resourceful and determined people that dealt with a lot of adversity - so
if (or when) your struggles in gardening occur, your ancestorial heritage should see you through! 😉😊💚👏

This is David replying...., and I pleased to mention that I regard myself to be very lucky to be working with my very talented and skillful colleagues. They do (daily) an amazing job, consistently tending to, nurturing and producing healthy, vigorous, beautifully grown plants that are poised to get off to a perfect start. This is further extended by the network of (usually) family owned garden centers that distribute our plants - people that are rooted in their community, know the area (and conditions), and are ready to provide on the spot help and advice. As you can guess, this just didn't happen over night or by chance .... It's part of a careful, considered strategy that is dedicated to to trying to do the best job possible. I know there are some really good growers and garden centers in NI (some of them are old friends), so I suggest you keep an eye out for a good source and stick with them once you find them.
Thanks again for you kind comments.

FYI, here's a link to the search feature on our website: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Clematis that shows colored pictures and the growth characteristics of over 80 sorts - maybe it will help you identify and find out more about your plant!

Thanks so much on showing the correct way to prune my Clamatis. Somehow, the plant started growing on the corner of my front porch but I didn’t plant it. It came out of nowhere. I have enjoyed it for the past three years.. I just pruned the dead stuff out. Now I know what to do and do it right.

Thank you, it is great to hear from you, thanks for tuning in and watching.
Establishing shelter is the key to building a good garden, and historically there's lots of instances where shelterbelts were planted first in windy localities, and then once established, in the lee of them, great (world famous) gardens have been created.
So with planning, patience and persistence, good conditions for enjoying beautiful clematis can be achieved.
Meanwhile, look for any sheltered (sunny) spots behind walls and buildings, erect solid trellis or strands of galvanized wire and you should be able to have a few plants flourish.

There are three groups in which clematis are generally categorized in terms of their blooming period which in turn determines how and when they are to be pruned, especially in cold climate areas. I believe the 'General Sikorski' variety falls in either the second or third group.
    Thanks for the lovely video!

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Like a lot of things in life, it is often tough to be hard and fast about categorizing things, and Clematis General Sikorski is a variety that is remarkably adaptable and forgiving. I've seen it pruned hard at several times of the year, early spring, later in the spring, and in summer and it still grows back and BLOOMS in the same year! So, while the general consents is the place Clematis into pruning groups like you describe, there are some like this one that doesn't quite fit all the time.

Great story! Thanks. I have a Clematis Paniculata (white, and blooms in the fall) growing up my trellis at tree, however outgrew, so I tied a pair of panthose around those onto the tree.
I also planted one in a pot (Purple Jackmanii) but will definitely transplant with one by tree. 2 different blooming cycles, ofcourse! When I planted in container, I most certainly added medium sized pebbles in the bottom before soil, understanding their cool roots! Thanks for info on pruning. Appreciated 💜💚

Thank you for watching and welcome to our channel.
There clematis selections do not come true for seed, and even if they did, it is a very slow process and it would take many years before you would get to any sort of size. Our plants are vegetatively propagated, so they always come true to type and when we ship them to the garden centers, they are nice big, premium sized plants that will get you off to a speedy start.
I know you are not in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, so the closest garden centers to you that carry our plants are going to be in the Washington DC area: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ so, perhaps sometime you are making a trip up our way you might want to include a stop or two on your itinerary.

They will like that, but if your shade is on the heavy and intense side, you are likely to not get many flowers. Is there any way you can train the tops around a corner, up a trellis, fence or arbor, or into a spot somehow to get at least a few hours sunlight?
The more light you can provide the more compact and freer flowering the plant is likely to be.

Thank you so much for this wonderful info! I've always loved Clematis, and finally got 2 for my yard now that I'm not moving anymore. Nelly Moser and Jackmanji. Since I've never grown them, this is fabulously helpful!💜

That's great to hear. Here's a link to our website that will give you details of some of the other varieties that you may want to consider: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Clematis. The two you mention are popular (very old) varieties that have withstood "the test of time"! But, more modern breeding triumphs have produced some fabulous compact and very free flowering ones that are longer and heavier flowering, and are perhaps better suited to our smaller sized garden sites.
Also, if you haven't already, might I suggest that you follow this TH-cam channel so that our new videos will pop up in your feed as we add them? And if you click the “like” button on any particular video it will help other TH-camrs find it too in the future.
Again, thanks for the interest. Happy spring!

I have never had luck with clematis until I got Nelly Moser. It seems when I cut it back though, it doesn't come back well. I never heard of that variety until I went to Phipps conservatory in Pittsburgh. Imagine my surprise! I also planted purple coneflower around the base for good shade.

@Lori Williams I live where it gets very cold and summer nights are very cool. My Nelly Moser survived a frigid winter and is doing beautifully well. Our nights are still 40s, but I'm thrilled it has lots of blooms. I know they love cold for the roots. Hope yours is flourishing!😊

Thank you so much. I just planted one of those deep purple Clematis - a tiny plant that fit into my hand. After watching your video, I promptly went outside, placed a good layers of mulch, applied a little fertilizer and watered it in very well. I gathered some large stones and placed them around the Clematis feet. I think I will have a beautiful plant climbing up my fence.

Thank you, great content! I have a Jackmanii clematis planted at the base of a rambler rose. The 3rd year the vine accidentally got wacked to ground level and since then has been a showstopper. I do prune it and it gives 2 or 3 bloomimgs per summer. The rose supports the vine very well and is in bloom when the vine finishes flowering. In north Texas, mulch and water are essential.

Great video, thanks. If you need to paint that lamppost what do you do?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's easy, you can either wait to winter time when the plant goes dormant. Or if you need to paint it during the growing season, just open up the chicken wire on one side (its just a long thin piece that is bent around the lamppost) and lay it down on the ground. Then when the post is painted and dry, reaffix the wire back again. The tendrils of the clematis will be intertwined with the chicken wire and because the are base of the clematis stems are quite flexible, they can be laid to one side without doing much damage.
      Thanks for an interesting question.

If it is any reassurance, I have successfully moved several of my plants many times. They generally, adjust and recover well to moving, so with a little care and lifting a nice rootball, you should be able to move yours successfully too. As you probably know, the best times are either this coming Autumn or the early part of the spring.

@J M The location gets morning sun until late June when tree shade moves in around noon. So it get lots of flowers. The move is about 6 ft. forward as arch over garden path.
