The Night Lords went rogue before the heresy. They see chaos merely as a tool to accomplish their goals, but see chaos worship as a weakness and perhaps for this reason they one of the least chaos infected traitor legions. When the heresy broke out they joined up with Horus, most likely because they had already been cast out by the Imperium (in their own minds atleast) or they could have joined the traitors for the lulz as martinus cornu so aptly put it.
I have read many Warhammer 40,000 novels, in my readings I have come across, the loyalist legions from multiple foundings as well as the traitors, xenos such as the orks, elder, tyrainds and the tau. I have also read novels on the Imperium, which covered the guard, mechanicus, and the inquisition. Even the necron got a few lines. Though most of these races I enjoyed reading about, the Night Lords are by far the most interesting faction that I have come across. They answer to no-one, whether it be chaos or the Emperor. They understand that fighting with honour will probably get you killed, and so choose to fight only when the odds are stacked in their favour. They use fear as a weapon, yet they were held in contempt by the Emperor for their tactics for simply doing as they were told to do - enforcing Imperial Compliance

So true also why there one of my favorite lore in warhammer 40k to. Its also funny they used fear bring systems in line and got punished for it and the Inquisition gets away with it. I think they do more damage then the Night Lords ever did.
Ironically, the Night Lord's Primarch, Konrad Cruze..... Didn't just betray the Emperor, his father, because of his visions... He did it to prove a point :x that, what he stood for, meant something. That Death means NOTHING compared to Vindication. The greatest Enigma within the Imperium.... Konrad Cruze, punished the wicked by using his greatest weapon, Fear.... And some say, he continued to do so after his betrayal. But, that's just crazy talk xD

During the opening acts of the Great Crusade, the Forces lead by The Empror used more force then needed. they slaughtered millions to get their way. This is what the Night Lords continued to do. Slaughter one segment, the next engagement will throw down their arms in fear. They were only guilty of continuing to do the very thing that the Great Crusade started. Total annihilation of the enemy. And they were punished by humans, who could not stomach the slaughter. Kurze had never known tranquility, had never known peace. He survived, nay, he thrived on the streets of Nostramo, he turned fear into an art form. He brought peace to a civilization that was rotten. And he knew exactly what his father had in plan for him and his Legion.

Even though they are traitorous scum, I sympathize with the Night Lords. They are by far my favorite traitor legion. It is always fun to see these sorts of discussions, the truth of the Night Lords betrayal. There are the obvious sides to it, that of the Emperor's loya sons and that of the Night Lords themselves. I tend to believe the Night Lord trilogy on the matter, it seems more... Dramatic. Really adds the character to the Legion that no other traitor has. Ave Dominus Nox.
no. Magnus the Red defied an order from the Holy Emperor, and continued to do research of the Warp. He was blinded by the Lord of Changes plans, and never even saw himself as being tricked.
the Night Lords on the other hand, were tossed out because of how the High lords of Terra, Humans, saw their fighting style of slaughtering everyone that defied the Emperor, or the Imperium of Man. They sided with Chaos to get revenge for doing their Job as laid down by the Emperor.

His crusades became less and less about the Imperium, and more about just causing terror and death. After the rumours became worse enough, the Emperor recalled Konrad to Terra. But then the Horus Heresy had started, and he gladly joined Horus. The only Legion who I'd say really got screwed by the Emperor was the Thousand Sons.
If I wasn't for the Black Templars I would have been a nightlord as they are my second favorite "group" in Warhammer 40K
My favorite Chapter. Out of all those who had been pissed on, the Imperium is most to blame for the Night Lords turning on them

Actually, because of their Primarch. But I also love that they employ the use of fear tactics. Also, I guess, because they aren't Chaos worshippers. My least favorite legion is the Iron Warriors, only because they are the Black Templars arch enemy. I love the Black Templars.

Sevatar was one of the true badasses of the whole Great Crusade, losing an honour duel to Sigismund because he decided rules are for other people and broke his nose with a headbutt (Like a True Night Lord IMO.) After 30 HOURS of fighting?! Are you freaking kidding me? Gotta give him and all the VIIIth their due, vile, scary and nasty, but undeniably awesome!

The Night Lords were the masters of hit and run tactics. Strike in the middle of the night, confuse sentries, demoralize the enemy. Then mow them down like wheat. However, the humans on Terra could not stomach this and sent an assassin to remove Cruze, and sealed their fate by making them The 8th legion their enemy.

Basically he created the Night Lords and World Eaters to be his attack dogs and when they were no longer useful he censured them and basically criticized them for doing what they had been made to do.

Did the Night Lords side with Chaos at all? For all I know, they had just joined the heresy for revenge upon the Imperium.
they don't, some of them do fall to chaos but it's on an individual level
they are no longer united as a legion so everyone do just what they want
@Angwulf (SPOILER ALERT) in Legion it shows that an alien group called the Cabal met with Alpharius and told him about the betrayal of horus and showed him visions of the future. They said that either the Emperor would win and chaos would slowly destroy humanity over the next 20 thousand years or that if Horus won, humanity would perish quickly and take most of Chaos with them. Alpharius did side with Horus but instead of retreating into the Eye with the rest of the traitors, they mysteriously
But he had to. In the end Cruze grew tired and was disguested with what he became.

You know why i don’t think my brother is dead? There’s no way in this galaxy someone who isn’t a primarch or the emperor could kill another primarch.

Imagine them as the Chaos Space Marine version of Batman... If Batman had no moral code and was incapable of showing mercy. It usually helps on the awesome factor :D
I would add Iron Warriors. Since they were basically sent in when no other legion could break through the enemy fortifications. Their legion was constantly taken apart to garrison conquered territories and to add to it all, they were not allowed to get the rest they needed.
Agreed, them and the World Eaters, the Emperor treated Angron and Kurze like dogs instead of sons
neither chaos or loyalist, I hope they turn away from there madness and help the imperium and humanity back into balance.

Blood Angels are proberbly the only Loyal chapter that are able to scar the shit out of chaos, Word Bearers ran away when a full blood angels task force turned to the black rage and attacked them like animals. Blood Angels know the meaning of Fear.

@AndroxineVortex Agree om the Death Guard. I'm a bit confused about the high standing for the Alpha Legion though. Of all the traitor legions, they are the one who is most in question about their allegiance. As a matter of fact we don't really know if they ever turned fully traitors. And like the Night Lords, they too are only mildly corrupted.

If you're asking if the Night Lords were part of the Blood Angels before the heresy, then the answer is no. the Night Lords is/were the 8th legion, the Blood Angels were the 9th ( the legions were split into chapters after the Horus heresy to make sure another civil wouldnt occur)

@AndroxineVortex With the supposed death of Alpharius it would seem likely that their legion would turn to chaos legitimately instead of for the sake of sabotage. Although, Alpharius is known as one of the greatest minds ever in the warhammer universe, so, you could argue that he had plans set up incase he did not survive.

Mostly when they commune with the Chaos gods its not out of worship, more of demanding and/or to gain the advantage in order to win. but never worship.

well if you read up on Magnus it says that he was travelling a way into which was forbidden, so eventually possibly even then Tzzezeth(however you spell it) possibly had his hands manipulating the Thousand Sons and Magnus
Thanks, I tried to capture the pervasive fatalism that Aaron Dembski-Bowden portrays in his books about the legion.
No, he censured the World Eaters because he specifically banned the implant that they used to amplify their killing frenzy, and yet they kept using it anyway, despite a direct order from the God-Emperor. And Konrad Curze lost control of his Legion because when he left Nostramo, it fell back into chaos and violence, and the only suitable replacements for his losses were criminals and gang members. Then he completely destroyed his planet when it rebelled against the Imperium.

Actually he completly destroyed the planet for several reasons, rebelling against the Imperium was not one of them. When he left Nostramo it was the ideal of imperial compliance, but once he was gone the planet turned to its old ways of crime and corruption. Having been rebuked by Dorn for executing rebels and criminals in order to effectively force complience, he returned to destroy Nostramo to prove that his methods of war was not empty words.
Sir, I would just like to state: I found this video, and your Night Lord thread independent of each other, and both were major inspiration to build my own force of our favorite murderers. And I only recently made the connection between these two :3
