On a tour of Europe in a volkswagon van with my brother and father, I dragged them to the French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois in 1981 and my father was set to hate it but his highlight was the Renault 5 races before the feature, absolutely mental racing!!!! Watching 2 dozen of these getting thrashed around was an absolute riot! Cheers for the memory!

My father was in the army and I spent my youth living in Germany in the 80s and ill never forget the day I saw one of these on the autobahn. It looked fucking insane, literally nothing looked like it. The rear wheels seemed monumentally wide compared to the skinny rims that were common place back then. This car was bat shit mental to see in the flesh by a young boy sat in the back of a yellow 3 series with no seatbelt on, because there wasn't one

Back in '82, I owned a simple Renault 5. I had a problem where the inlet valve had burned, and it would no longer start. After the Head Removal, I decided to look at the Alloy Head. I did some work on improving the gas flow, on both inlet and exhaust ports, the Head Casting was rough - inside the ports. I slightly enlarged these ports, and polished them. I was truly amazed at the increase in performance from doing this work!. The body on a Renault 5 ensured that "it returned to the ground" after about 2 years of feeling pleased with the small modifications I made to the engine. It doesn't seem to matter which car you drive, you could always try to simply polish the Inlet/exhaust ports, it will be a noticeable improvement in performance, especially on those smaller engines.

I own an 83' Turbo 2 with the 185hp upgrade kit in deep Marine Blue with a standard tan interior and the optional Gotti 150 wheels complete with 285mm rear tires. Produces over 1g of grip and will corner with most modern production cars although not nearly as fast in a straight line. But still, for its time, it was quite the weapon and considered an actual supercar thanks to its longitudinal mounted engine and wild Marcello Gandini styling. (Same designer that did the Countach, Miura and Lancia Stratos) When these cars are set up correctly they are a joy to drive. The shifter (not a cable linkage, sorry Chris), steering and brakes are so direct and the handling is actually much more neutral than many automotive publications of the time claimed. Lift off overseer is not really a big problem with these. I prefer the Turbo 2 to the Turbo 1 because parts availability is better, and I'm not really a fan of the bonkers interior of the Turbo 1. And other than the bespoke aluminum roof and doors of the Turbo 1 there's not much different between the two. They perform identically. Turbo 1's tend to bring right around $135,000 USD while Turbo 2's bring between $67,000 and $95,000 USD depending on color and condition.

As a fan of old Rallying i don't need to look Jean Ragnotti up. I bought a DVD that has 1.5 hours of uncommented Group B clips with incredible sound on it. And at the end there's one complete Special stage on board with Jean Rgnotti in a Renault 5 Turbo. Amazing to watch, as Rallying back then generally is.

When I was a kid, about 15 years old in the early 80's, I saw the ad for this car in the back of a popular car magazine for sale brand new. They were asking $19k for it, and compared to what was available at that time back in the day it was a ROCKET! Was really hoping to have it as my first car but I came from a poor family so that wasn't an option. Had always hoped to see the car in action one day, thanks for making that happen.

    • @newforestroadwarrior
      @newforestroadwarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Bear in mind that $19k for a supermini in the early 1980s was a LOT of money, especially in the States where there wasn't really a developed market for them.

I sold the Turbo 2 new in my time at Radbourne Racing Wimbledon. We also raced GT Turbo's and carried out all performance updates available on them. I recall £2000 you could have a T2 converted from LHD to RHD. I also remember once a businessman from Japan ordered 3 Pearl White cars from me to be converted to RHD, fitted with Gotti Wheels and send over to him. One was for himself but the other two where gifts for two of his best friends...Great Days.

I've kinda got a soft spot for this era of R5. I kinda took over my mum's 1.4 GTL after doing silly things in my Mini ;) ;) Going from the Mini to the Renault was sublime, 5 speed box, nice suspension that didn't bounce none stop, brakes and a whole host of other features that Mini's just didn't have. We almost convinced my Mum to chop this in and get the Turbo version but she liked her little black 5 and so the 19year old me was heavily disappointed in 1990.

I'm always encouraged when a car model I'm interested in, other things too, if there are not many out there for sale, despite a decent number being made, and if there are good sources of spares around; it usually means that (other than a fair number getting written off) the owners are hanging on to them, which usually means they're worth keeping an eye open for when they do come up.

Around 1985 when i was 14 i seen a pearl white Turbo 2 with a red interior parked on a side street off Byres road in Glasgow, probably the most bonkers car i'd seen back then.

The moment I saw the thumbnail, I thought Chris should probably buy this for himself. And start a youtube channel about driving it.

The fact that Renault made this, and then also made the Clio V6 is applause-worthy... I'm 25 years old and I'd love to drive, or at least ride passenger in, one of these cars... It looks like a car that could have been in Tintin comics, if Tintin was made around the 80's...

Those jaeger gauges are so cool. Love that JLC kept car gauges as only jaeger branded, despite merging in the late 1930s.

I was 12 when I saw first photos of this car in a car magazine in 1979 or 1980. That looked like the craziest car on the earth. Although the rally version was quickly overpowered by newer Group B it was so agile on tarmac in the hands of Mr Jean Ragnotti, it seems it was just dancing on the road.

I do love that car Chris. I know your a French car lover. A friend had the simple 5GT (1.4T) back in the 80's and it was hoot. Obviously not on par with that monster!! I can see by the body language of the car, that it handles beautifully. Just waiting for the first episode of the new TG series. Thumbs up!!

The TriHawk (owned by Harley Davidson now) three wheeler had a Citroen 2CV power plant, and it had R5 Turbo seats that were upholstered with Mercedes limo headliner material. The fabric was bulletproof. I ended up with a pair of these seats in one of my Dodge muscle cars, and they were as weird as they were awesome.

I would like to make a suggestion to Mr. Lovett regarding the car listing. There are 186 picture but none of them shows the underbody. For a car or that period (and from that manufacturer) it is crucial to understand the state of the chassis (corrosions, signs of accident etc.). I think having a 4 post lift and shoot some pictures from underneath would definitely set the website a part from the other enthusiast-auction websites.
    Cheers

Had a T2 Turbo. I remember doing figures of eight in the snow of the car park of our local pub with my wife when we heard we were pregnant with our first daughter. I now have six daughters. Memories.

My first car was a Renault 5 ..... 'L' ... 1975, complete with umbrella gearstick - a very direct gear change indeed. I'm pleased to note that it had some crossover parts with the Turbo 1 - those door keys in the shape of the Renault emblem!!!!🤣
