I saw you in Toronto some 30 years ago playing Dreggs. You are an idol of mine on guitar. You gave me the kindest smile as I drooled watching/hearing you. Great guitarist and a great person. Nice to see your right wrist without a bandage for a change. Take care and stay well Steve.
Thats a beautiful guitar. I'm glad Steve got Music Man to put on a clear pickguard though. I really hate the white pickguards that are on most guitars. I just dont see the point of painting an instrument in a beautiful colour then slapping a horrible bit of white or off white plastic on it.
That body looks SO similar to the Ibanez Roadstar II body. The only difference in shape is on the Roadstar II, the upper horn had a small difference in design (it was Luke's signature guitar in 1983). Although I had, as a 12 year old girl, a Bill Laurence pickup installed in the neck position to get that creamy sound. Although the Roadstar was sold in this color scheme, mine was the first aqua to black "sunburst" (thanks again to Luke). My point in saying all this? I started listening to Steve in 1983, and this guitar he's holding brings back SO MANY wonderful memories of the first year I gigged with that beautiful guitar. This guitar (and the amp & pedals) sounds INCREDIBLE! 💙🎶
Anyone ever noticed that when Steve is talking about the music he makes with Deep Purple he nearly always plays woman from Tokyo which is a tune written by his predecessor Ritchie Blackmore. You'd think he'd want to play one of his own compositions.
Hi, Marije, I'm afraid we don't have a performance video. Performance rights related to the music played prevents us at times from filming and posting entire shows.
And it was during this phase of his playing career that he recorded “High Tension Wires”, a tribute to his awesome talent as a composer as well as Master Guitarist.
I bought a music man axis, 23 years ago and no guitar except maybe another Music Man feels right to me. She is not a looker compared to the Beauties out there She's a plain Jane to the untrained eye, with a subtle metal flake pewter finish on the body, polished chrome Hardware bird's-eye maple neck and headstock, Rosewood fretboard, mm90 with black covers, whammy bar but no locking nut, (i have Incorporated the whammy bar into my playing Style so much that I feel like something's missing when I play a guitar without one. Not so much for deep dives but subtle pitch variations and expression.) I have a top of the line (not a custom) Strat that is arguably The Best of the Best as well as other fine six string specimens but none compare to My Music Man. The playability the sound the feel the craftsmanship.. Forgetaboutit.
This guitar is much more appealing to me than his blue Ernie Ball signature. I love Steve Morse and have met him in person (fantastic guy) but when this guitar showed up at L&M it just didn't grab me. I think because I'm more of a Dixie Dregs aficionado than the 'new' Deep Purple I would have preferred a Franken-Tele signature creation if one were ever made.
This is one of the best guitar demos on TH-cam. One way to improve upon it, though (of course in my opinion) is to remove the delay, as it makes it a bit more difficult to hear the true sound of the guitar.
Steve is THE BEST guitarist undoubtedly. Extremely fast and melodic. He knows his guitar and all the sound combinations thus drawing out the best sounds from his guitar. To top it all Steve you are humble.
I love Steve Morse and greatly respect his amazing playing BUT I ordered this exactly model and din't like the sound. I found the tone, attack level and sustain mediocre compared to all my other instruments; PRS, Les Pauls, Stratocasters and Telecasters....Steve would probably sound amazing on any model of guitar but I wonder if this guitar was designed only to be used with a wall of racks. I would appreciate other people's opinion. I ended up parting with this instrument. The neck is very easy to play and the general ergonomics are great. BTW I had the pickups worked on by an excellent luthier.
Hello, I have a fixed bridge Y2D since 2006 (just when it starts to be sell), and my guitar gets a very large sound projection, long sustain et lots of dynamics. So, maybe there's an issue with your guitar ? :(
+Steve Morse Maybe try adjusting the single coil pickup. In this video Steve makes a remark about when he's at a guitar clinic and playing someone else's guitar and maybe having to adjust the pickup.
Thanks I tried and had a luthier check it out...it seems that the wood combinations simply are not very good in terms of sustain compaired to the other guitars I cited.
Based on just looking at the guitar, I assume that tailpiece is used to allow the Tune-O-Matic to sit closer to the top of the body as opposed to a Les Paul-style which sits higher off the body. It looks like it gives the guitar more of a hardtail feel without actually using a hardtail. Then again I really have no clue. Just a guess LOLOL.
Dear Steve, I just found a killer deal on one of your Y2D guitars, and I realized something dumb about it. Super Dumb! Why... Do you have a pickguard at all? You may be thinking, "What do you mean? It's to hold the electronics!" No no no. The electronics are all direct mounted, and the guitar is rear routed. So why does the pickguard even exist? Certainly not for actual protection from scratches, as an experienced player such as yourself could avoid that by now. Just my 2 cents. 😉
I remember Steve saying in either a interview or demo that the pick guard adds a bit of height which keeps it the same as his number 1. So his volume and tone knobs sit at the same height as his other guitars.
Deniz M If you watch the video and understand what Steve is telling you about how he uses the volume and tone controls, and plays MANY MANY shows...you'd understand that he needs the pickguard on there to...(read this part slow) PROTECT AND PROLONG the beauty of the axe. Mkay?
Not sure any guitarist is as active with tone/volume control as Steve. Constant adjustments. Extremely nuanced player. Oh, and ridiculously skilled.
Steve Morse is a legend!
If you have ever scene Steve talk about his original guitar, you know he has put a ton of thought into the design of his signature guitars.
one of my favorite DP albums with Steve is Purpendicular.....
......AMAZING album!
Happy birthday to Steve!
I have one of these but with the tremolo bar. It’s incredible sounding and is a very easy guitar to play. I love it. Thanks Steve and Ernie Ball.
Steve (with straight face): "collaboration with Ernie Ball [...] getting close to three decades, which is odd since I'm 29 years old"
I cracked up
Well, Mr. Morse _is_ from the Twilight Zone..
Love Steve's sense of humour
He looks 29. OK maybe 40. ;-)
So he's 29..I don't get it
Steve Morse is incredible!
awesome pinky control !

I wish he'd come to Toronto again with any band he plays in. Want to see him live for once in my life
We're lucky to spend the same phase in time with this guy,...

I don't understand why it has a pickguard at all. Since it serves no purpose mechanically or cosmetically.
No pick guard on my music man and I like it that way
@@9unslin9er I have a music man with no pick guard, I like it that way.
Steve's work with The Dixie Dregs will live on forever.
great player
One of the finest guitarplayer in this galaxy

awesome guitar, awesome player

the 29 year old joke was cool
Great video, thanks! Is there maybe a video from the Sweetwater clinic that Steve did with Dave LaRue?
Hi, Marije, I'm afraid we don't have a performance video. Performance rights related to the music played prevents us at times from filming and posting entire shows.
SweetwaterSound Thanks for the reply, I understand. But thanks a lot for the awesome interview and demo videos!
Marije Essink goed bezig Marije! ook met je fb pagina:)
PS Anyone remember when Steve cut his hair in the '80s, I believe? 😱 No worries... his playing still rocked the house down.
Yes, Indeed, he was hired as a commercial pilot and the airline asked him to cut his hair to fly with them, so he did.
And it was during this phase of his playing career that he recorded “High Tension Wires”, a tribute to his awesome talent as a composer as well as Master Guitarist.

I so want the RED Y2D.... I need a raise.
musical genius

Some guys just have it when it comes to guitar.
that is his favorite rock guitar, but will it do country as well as the previous version with 4 pickups?
STEVE !!!!
Strange thing... Sweetwater sells all different EBMM guitars, but no longer seems to carry the Steve Morse model?!?
This is one of the best guitar demos on TH-cam. One way to improve upon it, though (of course in my opinion) is to remove the delay, as it makes it a bit more difficult to hear the true sound of the guitar.
What gauge strings does he use?
i thought it was 10-43
I think, it's 10ths on high Strings and 42th on the Base Ones!
Its high E ,B and D strings from a 10s set , the rest from 9s
they're telephone cables

I mean, it's Steve Morse. He could make scratching metal against a chalkboard sound musical.
I find this guitars tone isn't forgiving but is very clear and sounds good if you're playing well.

why the pickguard? that guitar does not need one..just bolt the pups to the wood.
but your playin is even better x
The tailpiece looks somewhat low tech. I wonder what the reasoning behind it is.
You can get one with a Floyd Trem. I don't think he ever was a huge trem user though.
Based on just looking at the guitar, I assume that tailpiece is used to allow the Tune-O-Matic to sit closer to the top of the body as opposed to a Les Paul-style which sits higher off the body.

so this is the american jeff beck. 2 of rocks kick ass dudes.
Music Man rides along names such Steve Morse, Petrucci and Lukather. I mean, come on, you gotta at least try one them guitars... dude...
Eduardo Cassiano I got one myself and it's the best I've ever had!
I have two and I love them, one for 20 years and still going strong.
0:09 minecraft?
Steve is so gud
Hahaha...29 yo...love it
Purple music must be easy for him to play compared to The Dregs.
That man hears like a bat..🎸🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
his guitar playing is more fluent than his speech
Thats why he dlose not sing .... Gotta love HIM.
Well it's great that he's a professional guitarist and not a speaker ;)

Useless to have the pickguard. Ruins the beauty of the axe.
that's why it's clear.
