@ toidIllorTAmI- I can answer that. Pit Vipers are typically very low energy. Crotalus Horridus(Timber Rattlers) are generally very shy and don’t really bite unless you spook them or are constantly messing with them. Acts Chapter 28 - "Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. 2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god." This is not a metaphor in the NT, but every other Christian denomination views what these people are doing as a provocation/test of the Lord, which is a sin. The difference between them and Paul is that Paul was an original apostle who was caught off guard rather than trying to make a show of the abilities given to him.

My family on my mothers side was a part of one of these churches in Jolo in the mid to late 1900's. Three of my family died from snake bites. It's interesting to see the world discovering this part of Appalachian culture.
What blows my mind out of the proverbial water is that bruv is consuming stryctnine instead of a small amount of rattlesnake venom or antivenin. Also, I am amazed he is not milking venomous snakes and sending the venom to the University of West Virginia, that they can then send to local hospitals. Crazy.
People who harvest antivenin(atleast historically, and mostly in crazy mode) will often regularly dose themselves, rationally with a safe amount of venom so they build a tolerance to the poison. In case the worst scenario occurs. To be fair tho...they are really good at snake handling.
u just meeting people talking to them and me able to just listen to what they think and what keeps them busy will never not be one of my favourite things
I assumed this was just gonna be a sensationalized piece about the crazies at the snake churches, but I was surprised and very appreciative that it also covered some of the economic plight of southern WV. Thanks for coming to and shedding some light on the area, Andrew. It and the people there need all the help and attention possible. The snake cult people, eh, not as much, but the area desperately needs help in every way possible. I live in WV but I’m a bit north of that area in a place a bit less economically destitute, although still not an economic utopia obviously. The prescription drug crisis destroyed the state, in every area. It spared no region and no family in the state. The area with these churches were already devastated by coal mining’s downfall, so the drug crisis was just another blow after that. I can understand why people in that area would be willing to practice any crazy religion at this point because idk how else people there would even be able to survive. You’d have to be either on drugs, which most are, or fervently religious to be able to withstand living there. It’s incredibly depressing to even drive through those areas. I think these people are pretty crazy personally but I don’t really blame them and although I’d probly lean towards outlawing what they’re doing, I don’t think that would stop them at all so there’s really no point in doing it. People here will still do it even if it’s against the law and idk how you could scare or intimidate people who handle venomous snakes and drink poison for fun.
Are we gonna talk about the fire instruments ? I see multiple tellys, a hofner bass on the wall, an old lady rippin the drums. Place looks like a good time. They should call their band " Deadrat Stank "
@EmberOakSquids I understand your confusion because I believe it’s a result of how the video was edited together during that portion. So, as a fellow human who was also confused by the same exact thing (to the point I had to do some extra googling in order to resolve the itch it all put in my head), I got you: Most importantly you have to remember that both his father and his brother succumbed to complications resulting from snake bites. His brother, Mark Randall Wolford, died in 2012 (aged 44); while his father, Mack Ray Wolford, died in 1983 (aged 39). I’m sure the similarities in name and circumstance also make everything *even more confusing* as the audience sees both a banner and a stone memorializing the brother’s life and accomplishments while simultaneously hearing details regarding *the father’s death*. I’m not exactly sure how old the reverend Chris Wolford is currently, but based on his brother’s age in 2012 I’d guess very early 50s at the youngest. I’m not sure what their age difference was. Edit: I just discovered Math. If he was 11 in 1983 he’d be 52 today.

I live about 10 minutes from the WV state line and I've seen some really weird and strange things floating lights, weird creatures etc but churches like this are actually more common than what most people think even though it's illegal in most states
I've spent a good bit of time in the areas near this place and most of the people are pretty cool.
Long time fan, from Mingo County Williamson West Virginia. Every place I've personally been to in this state is basically exactly like this there are small pockets that are a little more urban, but even those places are flanked on all sides by hollers.
Thank you for making this. Too often we see coverage of untraditional sectors of Christianity through the lens of "Boy ain't they weird?" But you captured a man's honest conviction to his faith. And I applaud you for that.
there’s plenty of this is weird in this
Sure but I think it's honest and not biased. It's real. And I think if you film any church you're gonna find "out there" material.

Being a man who works in the reptile industry for a long time, I'm hella excited you're covering this, such an interesting story in general.
So how do the snakes feel about being there in all that chaos?
@ toidIllorTAmI- I can answer that. Pit Vipers are typically very low energy. Crotalus Horridus(Timber Rattlers) are generally very shy and don’t really bite unless you spook them or are constantly messing with them. (Agkistrodon Contortrix Copperhead) on the other hand are just bitey, flighty and have a spazzy attitude and account for more bites then any other snake in the USA so free handling them you have a 100% chance of getting bit. Most snakes just wanna track down prey and be lazy and that’s all they do
@Phil-j7t thank you for that information, I find reptiles very fascinating

6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god."
This is not a metaphor in the NT, but every other Christian denomination views what these people are doing as a provocation/test of the Lord, which is a sin. The difference between them and Paul is that Paul was an original apostle who was caught off guard rather than trying to make a show of the abilities given to him.

Used to watch snake church handling reel to reel film in elementary school in Virginia in the 1960's.

I think what shocked me the most is the fact that this guy is apparently 24??? Hearing he was 11 in 2012 floored me i thought he was easily in his 50s
@EmberOakSquids I understand your confusion because I believe it’s a result of how the video was edited together during that portion.
So, as a fellow human who was also confused by the same exact thing (to the point I had to do some extra googling in order to resolve the itch it all put in my head), I got you:
Most importantly you have to remember that both his father and his brother succumbed to complications resulting from snake bites.
Perfect reply. I was thinking the same
