All those negative and disrespectful comments on James... Any idea what it takes to preserve your voice across the years? Ever compared voices of other artists now against their 30 years younger selfs? Impossible to keep up. So shut the f*** up and listen to other artists in their twenties. Else be greateful DT is still here and in good shape with a steady and high quality output. Distance Over the Time is a gift 25 years after I&W and I enjoy DT as much as I did in 1993.

Admittedly, his vocals do sound a little off on this DVD. For some reason, they also put a lot of distortion effects on his voice at weird times, so it's not all James himself sounding off.
THAT SAID, I'm not saying it to be an asshole. Clearly, the guy's got good days and bad days. I remember checking out the Live at Luna Park DVD and being blown away by his performance. Even on this DVD, his "Pale Blue Dot" recording sounds SPOT ON. I think it'd just be better if the band accommodated his voice more. Having heard his work on recent guest appearances like the new Ayreon, the guy can clearly sing his ass off. He just can't sing like he did on "Scarred" or "Learning to Live" anymore. And that's fine! Very few singers who have been in the business as long as him suffer zero degradation in their voice. But look at dudes like Ian Gillan from Deep Purple. Sure, he can't do "Highway Star" anymore, but the band has worked around the style and it's really working out for him. Kind of with DT would do the same for James. They got DAMN close on "The Astonishing" by emphasizing the dramatic part of his voice, but if they could apply that to an album that isn't incredibly long and ballad-driven...

My favorite Rudess-era album for James (Scenes From a Memory withstanding) is Systematic Chaos. It was the last album that felt like they were playing in his strongest range.

I grew up with DT when they were still called Majesty. Hate to say it, but James’ voice is really going. I think he has good pitch usually, and if he really focused harder on it, he could salvage it, but he is the weakest link right now. Please, James, please refocus on quality. I’ve seen it plenty. Am I the only one that thinks James LaBrie is the weak link in DT? I mean, hes not the worst vocalist, but you can tell he gets out of breath quickly and struggles to sing the lines in key. I know growing older has a big part in that, but still, his vocal performance isn't all that great in my opinion. At least, not any more. With a bit of work I reckon he could pull it back, but right now, he just reminds me of Vince Neil (although maybe not quite as bad as Vince 🤣)
I'd still see them live though. But can't say I'd enjoy James' vocals.

Watched the video for the band. The live sound mix is gorgeous. But in contrast LaBrie's singing is worst than EVER.
I'll write it for the millionth time: LaBrie should've left the band, not Portnoy.
Mike wanted to fire him and get a new singer back in the early 2000. The rest of the band refused and look at the result now. People always say he's "The voice" but that's bulkshit. Look at Kamelot: the band seems dead after Kahn's departure but Karevik's sounds almost the same and they're stronger as ever. DT should do the same and get a new singer that can perform as Labrie did 25 years ago, it's totally possible.
LaBrie should spend less time diving his hair, getting tattoos and rings and more time practice his singing just for an acceptable performance.
