      I bought this download from Flatpick guitar site, one of the best things I've done to help my learning backup and general guitar skills, that I could not pick up from other players. Thank you for posting this clip.

    Anyone who follows Wyatt's tutorial (and tries to keep up) will instantly come to appreciate how amazing of a rhythm guitarist he is. Those chords are not easy transitions in the slightest.

  • @bradsparks6008
    @bradsparks6008 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I love them both equally and I am aware of Tony's amazing lead, but I will say after years of listening to Tony I have gravitated to the stuff that he and Wyatt are on. As far as rhythm goes, Wyatt just blows everything out the water when he does his rhythm and he is one of the best rhythm guitarists in the world.

    Beautiful piece of music. I just picked up this video and it's amazing. Wyatt is great. If you're looking to expand from basic folk/bluegrass rhythm guitar playing to something more advanced, then this video is wonderful. Even if you just want to watch some masters at work, this is a great pick-up.

    thanks for the heads up... I saw your comment on Zappas early 70's band w/Ruth Underwood,Napoleon, Duke, Fowler(s), Thompson, etc. I agree completely by far my favorite Zappa band. Saw them with Waits (solo) as the opening act. He also had Ralph Humphreys as a 2nd drummer awsome show. Ah the dear Vassar... lucky enough to see him with O&ITW for the Boarding House sessions. Probably among the few there, who knew he was the real star of the band. The guys in the band all knew.

    I love everything from Frank Zappa to Bill Munroe! It took a minute to click with Phish but the more I listened, the more I understood their music. Pink Floyd was also like that for me. I had to listen a few times before I got it. Now I love it! I really think you might enjoy Mike Gordon's first solo album called "Inside-In". He has a lot of great players on there with him. Bela Fleck, Col. Bruce Hampton, Vassar Clements, just to name a few. Try to Google it & see if they offer a few tracks!

    Tony Rice is a good ole boy, totally not a Borat! (Neither is Wyatt :P! ) I'd love to see one of those amazing Japanese fingerstyle players try to tackle some of Tony Rice's stuff. If anyone can send me a link of something like that, I'd love to see it. Seems to me that they have so many amazing technical guitarists over there, would love to see them tackle the true soul of Bluegrass.

  • @Dedhedted71

    Don't be sorry! You are 100% correct! Thanks for setting me straight. However I do believe he owns more than 1 Martin. Ever heard the album Tone Poems? Tony & David Grisman play a bunch of songs on their vintage instruments. It comes with a booklet that pictures each instrument & gives much history on each. It's a beautiful album with a great booklet!

    Sorry Ded... Tony does own one of the most famous of all Martins, the highly modified (enlarged sound hole, Gretsch blank fretboard, unlabeled headstock) Clarence White D18. But in this video he is playing the Santa Cruz Guitar Company Tony Rice signature model, which is modeled after the White D18, in every detail. His brother Wyatt also appears to be playing one of the Cruz Rice models.

    I hear a little blues in Jerry's soloing style and not so with Tony. But like what else do you observe as a major difference in their style? Because I still think they sound sort of similar with the notes they choose...

  • @Dedhedted71

    To be honest I like Phish's music best post Billy Breathes disc. The earlier stuff is a bit weird but still a lot of good jams. Mike Gordon's music rocks from the get go. I love every solo project he has done. Forget Google! They only offer lame samples. Mike has done 2 albums with guitarist Leo Kottke. Both are available on Myspace audio player. You can listen to the entire albums. Just search myspc music for Leo Kottke! The albums are called 66 Steps & Clone! Hope you like it!

    This is a great clip and Tony is fantastic but for all around best flat-picker, I'd have to give that to Norman Blake. The sheer complexity with the combinations of rhythm, melody, and cross-picking of the stuff he plays puts him above Doc (who I think is great) in my opinion. Check out "Norman Blake, Flatpicker" on TH-cam. I hear a lot of Norman in much of what Tony Rice plays.

  • @oui

    I think their tones are definitely distinguishable. Their technique, etc. is a big part of that. I can hear a guitar break and tell that it's Tony Rice, can't say that same for Jerry though.

  • @guitarice
    @guitarice 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    I checked the winfield site and I saw no mention of JP ever in the top 3. If I'm wrong, let me know. Not sure if Tony ever entered a Winfield contest. Winning a contest proves the winner is really good, but some of the greatest flatpickers have never won winfield. Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, David Grier, ect... Even Mark O' Connor says that he has lost more than he's won.

    @flatpikinguitar Actually, Tony did NOT do a lot of cocaine in the 70s. In his recent biography he states that he ALWAYS stayed away from coke. Beer, reefer, and coffee, now that's another story. Not sure what your source is for the coke comment, maybe you just assumed that because everybody else was doing coke in the 70s that Tony did too.

    Tony plays Martin guitars.

  • @fomomoto3
    @fomomoto3 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    double check the liner notes... they do not own most of those instruments. The Tone Poems series is GREAT, but like the Tone Poets 2cd set, which spins the concept into various players on two instruments, for the most part they used instruments they borrowed for the recordings. That being said, Rice probably does own more than one Martin. He does have a few of the Cruz guitars too.
