I have watched almost everyone on TikTok try to teach me how to do this. I finally found you and your voice is truly so calming, and it makes me feel so calm during a stressful time at exam week.
I think, out of all the maths channels, NancyPi is by far the best! She talks through it step by step which allows you to actually keep up and understand it. Most maths channels dive straight in, go far too fast and don't talk through it step by step. Keep up the good work!
Wow... 27 years out of school and this FINALLY makes sense! It didn't help me any that my instructor didn't speak English very well. When being taught the art of solving "quadratic equations", we were all just staring, glassy-eyed at the board while our instructor droned on about "quad-e-reddic eck-wishuns". Thanks for making this look easy.
I really love your channel and it really helps me because I know it may seem like a small thing, but I like how we’re able to see a person and not just hands writing, because I take in a lot when I’m learning. I can visually see you writing and I can also see words coming out of your mouth which doubly cements the information I’m intaking so thank you so much for that. I also like your setup with that clear board and honestly even the pink color keeps a girl like me engaged, who is allergic to math. Thank you for all your videos that are concise and gentle. I’m taking calculus again which I failed and I’m hoping to really make a comeback. You videos give me hope. Thank you.

Yes it did! This video did help, because I was never taught this simplified X-method. Now, very difficult quadratic equations can be solved much easier. Thank you!

Hi Nancy just want to say i love you and your videos so so much, they have helped me so much. I'm in a rehabilitation center at the moment and I'm trying to get my grade 12 and you've given me hope.
Beautiful and brilliant NancyPi's Magic X method for solving problems like 3x²+14x-5=0 is best if it's a fill-in-the-blank question. However, if it's a multiple choice question such as on the SAT test, the Sums and Products Method is much faster, easier and less error-prone than the Magic X Method. In fact, the solution can be calculated in your head in just a few seconds. Step 1: Divide the second number (the coefficient for x) by the first number (the coefficient for x²) and change the sign. This number is ALWAYS the SUM of the roots. Here that number is -14/3 or -4 2/3. Step 2: Examine the 5 possible answers to determine which roots when added equal the number from Step 1. If there's only one match, that must be the correct answer. If there's more than one match, perform a second calculation to determine the product of the roots to eliminate any duplicates. For that calculation, divide the third number (the constant) by the first number (the coefficient for x²). Here that number is -5/3 or -1 2/3. You can also perform the multiplication calculation first. In fact, it's best to do so if the last number (the constant) is an even number when divided by the coefficient for x² and not a fraction as in 3x²+14x-6=0. Here that number, the product of the roots, is -2, an even number which is easier to work with. To find the answer even more easily, I would first glance at the five choices to determine if any of the answers have root sums that are equal. If not, I would know the multiplication test is not necessary because there are no duplicates among the sums. To summarize, the roots for 3x²+14x-5=0 are 1/3 and -5, the sum of the roots is -4 2/3 and the product of the roots is -1 2/3. The salient point is multiple choice questions should be approached differently than fill-in-the-blank questions because finding the four wrong answers is often much easier and faster than finding the one right answer the long way.
Why am I watching math? No idea but it's really relaxing. You should seriously consider doing ASMR math...you have such a soothing voice. Thanks for the content Nancy!
At 6:13. I use a slightly different method. Using your example: 1) mult. coeft of x^2 by const.: 3 x -5 = -15. 2) Find factor pairs that sum to coeft of the x-term: -1 and 15. 3) Re-write the original equation using -x + 15x (found at .2): 3x^2 - x + 15x - 5 4) Place brackets around the first two terms and again around the next two terms: (3x^2 - x) + (15x - 5). 5) Factor these brackets: x(3x - 1) + 5(3x - 1). Note: the two bracket MUST be the same, else you have made a mistake. 6) Put the terms outside each bracket, i.e. x and 5, into one bracket, (x + 5); the other bracket is already done, (3x - 1). 7) Put these brackets together: (x + 5)(3x -1). giving x = -5, x = 1/3. It may appear difficult but this is owing to the format here. Try it and you will see it is much simpler. In my view at least. :)
