i planted a few funnels earlier this summer. But the aphids and the ants were all over them so i trashed most of them. i’ll do it again next year. Thanks for the video.

My seed packet says to grow fennel apart from a garden because it “ tends to have a negative effect on growth of other things planted around it”. Have you experienced this? How close is your fennel to other vegetables you grow? Thank you for the great video!
Not for bulbing fennel, but I have heard that for the flowering/herb fennel. I couldn't find the real reason nor many people experiencing that problem. I guess it is one of those debatable items in gardening. In any cases, I grow them in containers and none of other vegetables growing around them had any issues. Maybe the best is to try it and find out if it is true🤷🏻♂️. Hope you won't experience any problem growing fennel. Thank you so much for getting in touch!

Wow it is the same thing! I found this odd looking plant growing on my backyard. Got curious because I never seen a leaf like that. Obviously I plucked it to observe it closer and the scent is soothing.. I know It's probably a special type of plant. It grow right on the edge of wall and ground met. Oh, my backyard that is fully tiled dunno how it got there and It "thriving" at the earliest stage currently on the crac k... Got some tech to help me to identfy the plant.
And This plant did not cease to surprise me when I discover it is a vegetable and that could become bulbous on the bottom area. Mine does not reach that stage yet. I'll just transferred it to a proper pot now. Finger crossed

I hope we can use the cut-and-come-again method to grow fennel cause it's hard to cut off such a beautiful veggie.

I saw a TH-cam video talking about fennel and they said even the roots are edible just fry them up with some oil

Yes, the roots are nice to eat, but they have a tough woody part to remove. So it's not as fun as a carrot.

i took the seed and soaked it for 2 days. Then i filled a used flat sushi container with soil, and sprinkled around the wet seed in some soil. 2 weeks later, I have fennel seeds growing in the little sushi dish green houses. Im going to transplant them in small pots soon.

Hi! Thank you for this video! When in the year do you plant them? Do you have to wait until the last frost date has passed? Or can they tolerate mild frost?
You can start seeds indoor if last frost date if not in near future. But Fennel is a cool temperature crop and will grow in mild frost. Cool conditions are perfect for bulb production. Also, you can sow late in summer for fall harvest. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!
Hey quick question! How do you handle pests such as aphids, caterpillars, spider mites etc? I have been growing peppers and they got destroyed by pest and yours always look perfect
I usually check my vegetables regularly and if I notice any early presence of pests, I either spray neem oil mix or Spinosad mix (both are organic). I’m just trying fennel in large grow bags where do you get your soil from for the bags??
I mix my own potting soil (shown @2:42 min), but if you want to use bagged potting mix, Kellogg Garden organic raised bed and potting mix, or Kellogg Garden organic patio plus are both great choices. Thank you for visiting.
Love fennel. It's not in the stores or Kroger online here in s florida. Wonder if I can grow in the winter, I'm sure too hot in summer. How much sun? Sun here very strong. If I cut them like this, will the roots grow a new bulb???? I can grow them on my pool deck which has a cage, so should cut down on pests.
You sure can grow them in mild winters. I live in California with hot summers and grow fennel early fall or late winter. happy growing and thank you for your comment!
Do you have a video showing what fertilizers you use? Do you use banana water?
I usually use organic slow release fertilizers depending on the plant type. All purpose fertilizers usually work for a wide range of plants. Check my amazon page here www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/3OOR0YYL58Y0Z?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d for a list of fertilizers I use.
And I do not use banana water. These type of homemade plant food have very minimal nutrients for plants and you will need plenty of them to be beneficial. I never got a good results using them. Thank you for getting in touch!

Fennel is best to start in early spring.If you have hot summers/mild winters like me in SoCal, as you said it is best to start late summer (Jul-Aug) for a fall crop. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!
How tall is the grow bag? I didn't expect fennels to require such a big container. Thank you for the straightforward guide.
The grow bags are 12" tall. You may use smaller containers if you want to plant individually or fewer plants per pot. Appreciate you comment!
What type of fertilizer do you use?

I have read online that they need to be earthed up but you don't appear to have done this and they look fantastic
Maybe when seedlings are young you use it to help them grow straight, but never heard that you need to do it all the time. I always grow them as shown in the video with no issue. Thank you for sharing and for your comment!
Can I dig dog fennel up and put in a pot?
If they are young and at early stages yes. Mature ones might struggle when transplanted. Thanks

It's a thumbs down for any gardening video that advocates using peat. Massively environmentally destructive.
So what do you suggest? coco coir? It has its own environmental effects. And how about the fossil fuels or plastic that you use in literally everything , including the car you drive or the device you used to write this comment? I'd say they are "Massively environmentally destructive" too. And if you do more research you will see that nurseries haven't found a sustainable replacement for peat moss and wouldn't survive without it. Like anything, we just need to use it consciously and mindfully. Good luck.
@@TowardGarden I choose not to drive a car, but yes of course I obviously have a lap top and yes quite a few items dependent on fossil fuels - although I think about every single items before I purchase. But I'm talking here specifically about peat. I'm afraid you're wrong to say nurseries haven't moved to alternatives to peat - and certainly for home gardeners there is absolutely no need. Home made compost, leaf litter, buying organic manure locally - there are loads of options depending on use. Using peat IS massively destructive - you have to acknowledge this. Peatlands store vast amounts of carbon-twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests. Once harvested for horticultural peat etc, the peatlands are effectively destroyed and yep that's adding to climate destruction - as well ecosystem damage. Please please do look at alternatives - there are plenty out there.

Coir is nothing but a 100 percent by product of coconut. The processing is also with minimal environmental effects.
Don't compare it with peat moss which takes million years to produce.

For example, according to NC State Univ. " Waste from the coconut-processing industries gives rise to numerous environmental problems. Waterlogged shells are reported to be breeding sites for mosquitoes, which can lead to epidemics of dengue fever or malaria in nearby communities (Dumasari et al. 2020). Other effects reported as reducing the life quality of the surrounding population include unpleasant smells and greenhouse gas emissions due to bacterial degradation of the coconut processing waste, a lack of storage space for the landfill sites, the clogging of natural watercourses and the destruction of the natural environment (Dumasari et al. 2020)".
